Ottilie and Odile

We’re still trying to land on a name for our little girl due very, very soon. We keep going back and forth and are now considering adding a new name to the list: [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]. One thing keeping us from adding the name is its similarity to [name_f]Odile[/name_f], which is the name of a cousin. Are [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] and [name_f]Odile[/name_f] too similar? If not, general thoughts on the name?

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is very cute! I don’t think it’s too close to [name_f]Odile[/name_f].

I don’t think it’s too close to [name_f]Odile[/name_f] -unless they’re going to be together all the time.
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is a lovely name

I think [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is gorgeous, and in theory it should be fine, but I know for myself if this was my dilemma - I would chose another name.

Your signature contains a lot of great names (especially the personal musings), whatever you pick for your daughter I am sure will be beautiful.

Good luck!

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is lovely - spunky, yet sweet, with a great vintage flair. I don’t think it’s too similar to cousin [name_f]Odile[/name_f].

They would be too close for siblings, but they have enough difference for cousins, I say go for it!

Not too close for cousins

Not too close at all for cousins. [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is lovely, I hope you use it.

let the parents know-- it’s not worth a family feud if they would be really upset by it. however, i think ottilie is so sweet, and i personally wouldn’t have a problem with it if i was odile’s parents

I think same meaning, origin and sound alike is too similar.

Wow, you’re a cool name family!

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is lovely, and sounds fab with your son’s name. I think it’s fine to use in those circumstances; there’s also [name_f]Ottoline[/name_f], which I also really like.

What are your current frontrunners? I love your style and I know you’ll settle on something stunning. Best of luck!

Thank you so much for your opinions, everyone. I should probably clarify, [name_f]Odile[/name_f] is my cousin (and yes, we do have some very impeccably named family members, which mades this search a tad harder), but I think the dilemma is still much the same. It’s probably the name nerd in me cracking under the pressure of actually bestowing a name on a real child, but I can’t help but find fault in all the names we’re considering!

@bonhomieconsomie - Thanks! Unfortunately the personal musings are just that. Naming with a partner and considering outside variables is a game changer!

@[name_f]Katinka[/name_f] - Thank you  Right now, my husband’s favorite is Be@trix C@talina, which I also love but have another potential family conundrum with. My top choice changes hourly it seems!

As a warning, I may be plaguing the message boards over the next few weeks :-/

I like [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]. Unfortunately it doesn’t work in my accent, otherwise it would be on my list too. I think it’s different enough in sound from [name_f]Odile[/name_f], that it wouldn’t be assumed to be an honour name for your cousin.

Oh, I do love [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]! Such a sophisticated yet feisty name. You have some lovely options

I think this largely depends on your accent. When you say [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], are you making a clearly sharp T sound or do the Ts sound similar to the D in odile?

That could make them a little matchy, but the O is pronounced differently, they have different endings, and unrelated meanings.
I think it should be fine to use. Maybe too much if they were siblings but since [name_f]Odile[/name_f] is a cousin they’re removed enough to not be an issue in my mind.

All that being said I’m really rooting for [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f].

It’s so cute! I’d go for it. Since when do we have to factor in cousin names?!
