Otto

[name]Just[/name] looking for opinions on it. It is my steps fathers middle name ans his fathers name. If we have a boy his middle name will be [name]Thomas[/name] after my dad. We are still discussing the fn (don’t know what we’re having). I’m not sure how i really feel about it but it would be nice to name a son after both of them. His first name is [name]William[/name], which has been tossed because I will only use it with nn [name]Liam[/name] (hate [name]Bill[/name], [name]Billy[/name], etc.) and DH has a cousin [name]Liam[/name] so he won’t do it. We have about 4 other names in our list but none with family significance. Thanks!

To be honest, it’s not my favourite… [name]Even[/name] with a soft spot for [name]German[/name] names, I can’t get past the associations of [name]Otto[/name] von Bismarck and the bus driver from the Simpsons, not to mention a similar sound to “auto”. Sorry!

I think of [name]Otto[/name] as ‘going over the top’ in the mud of Passchendaele in a WWI movie. In short, roughly 115 years old.

It’s very sweet to honor your biological father and stepfather simultaneously. Would you be en to any international variant of [name]William[/name], like [name]Willem[/name], [name]Wilson[/name], Wilmot, [name]Guillaume[/name], or [name]Gwilym[/name]?

I like [name]Otto[/name]! I also like [name]William[/name] and all variations of the name, the ones [name]Blade[/name] mentioned and also Ville, [name]Vilhelm[/name], Villos and Illiam.

Variations of [name]Otto[/name]: [name]Ottone[/name], Ottorino, [name]Odo[/name] and (my fav) [name]Ode[/name].

I like [name]Otto[/name] too. To me it’s a elegant name in the same vein as [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Oscar[/name] or [name]Milo[/name].

Well the name [name]Otto[/name] is out here because our garbage bins are called [name]Otto[/name] bins! I would look for a viable alternative like [name]Oliver[/name].

rollo

I love [name]Otto[/name]! I agree that it’s very similar in style to [name]Hugo[/name] or even [name]Jonah[/name] or [name]Piers[/name]. It has a a traditional yet quirky vibe, for me.

I think [name]Otto[/name] is really unique. [name]Otto[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] sounds so masculine and I’m pretty sure there won’t be many other Ottos in his class.

I had to reply to this! My dad’s name is actually [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Otto[/name], I really love both names I plan at least using one of them to honor him one day. [name]Even[/name] if [name]Otto[/name] wasn’t my dad’s middle name I’m pretty sure I’d still really like it!

I think [name]Otto[/name] is quite a solid and useable name. However, being a huge Simpsons fan myself, the association to the stoner bus-driver from the show is a really strong one for me.
I do, however, really like the suggestion of finding a variation of [name]William[/name], some of them I would prefer over [name]Otto[/name].

I think [name]Otto[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] sounds handsome. It fits with the recent ‘o’ trend, [name]Hugo[/name], [name]Leo[/name], [name]Theo[/name], [name]Arlo[/name] etc.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I’m on the fence with it. It’s important to us to use [name]Thomas[/name] in the mn spot (my dad passed when I was 9 and I have 4 brothers and sisters so that’s why mn and not fn). The more I think about it, I would really like to include my stepdad’s name too.

[name]Otto[/name] isn’t my cup of tea, but there is nothing wrong with it. It is masculine, uncommon and has a rich history! [name]Otto[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] is great.

I love [name]Otto[/name], at least in theory, but the Simpsons association is way too strong for me. I could see how that might fade away if an actual person were in front of me, introducing themselves as [name]Otto[/name], but I’m not positive it would. I just read a book with a character named [name]Otto[/name] and all I could think of was [name]Otto[/name] the Bus Driver. The Simpsons and I grew up together though. The show is ever-prevalent where I live, so I’m pretty sure an [name]Otto[/name] would get a comment around every corner, but that may not be the case for you.

I’ve never been a fan of the show. I don’t think I’d let a fictional cartoon character sway my opinion on it. I’m sure we could find an unsavory character for just about every name. I might be a little offended if someone compared my child to a stoner to his face but I seriously doubt someone would do that.

I wouldn’t let The Simpsons ruin the name for you. If we all avoided names that are from tv, cartoons or movies, a lot of names would no longer be usable.

I love the name [name]Otto[/name] and the family connection makes it that bit more special. But if you can’t get past it being from The Simpsons, perhaps you might like [name]Orlo[/name] as an alternative? Definitely just as unique, but I still think [name]Otto[/name] [name]Thomas[/name] would work better.

My boy’s name is [name_m]Orlo[/name_m] and he has occasionally told people his name was [name_m]Otto[/name_m] – he really liked the robot character in the book “See [name_m]Otto[/name_m].” I think [name_m]Otto[/name_m] could work, especially with the family connection.

[name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_m]Otto[/name_m]!

I’m quite fond of [name_m]Otto[/name_m]. Go for it!
