Our Baby Boy came early at 33weeks. please help with name

I am new to this forum. [name_m]Just[/name_m] found this website and I like it a lot. I have started lurking around in search of a name for our boy but running out of time since everything came quick and unexpected yesterday.

I like [name_m]Liam[/name_m] a lot but it seems to be very popular. I would prefer more unique name. Kind of traditional like [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] or [name_m]Grayson[/name_m] but also modern. [name_f]My[/name_f] husband and I like European names. [name_f]My[/name_f] husbands name is [name_m]Christian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m], his dads name is [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Jeffery[/name_m] so our little ones middle name will probably be [name_m]John[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] dads name is [name_m]Richard[/name_m] which is not our first choice but I would love to have my side of the family included.

Currently my husband suggests [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] which I kind of like with the exception that the first name is not unique and my side of the family is not included, however I guess it will be to much of middle names if going with [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Rick[/name_m] maybe.

It is so hard to pick a name! I hope you have some suggestions for me…

What about a name that has the same meaning as your father’s? [name_m]Richard[/name_m] means “brave or dominant ruler.” Here are some unique names that mean “ruler”.

[name_m]Alaric[/name_m]
[name_m]Alric[/name_m]
[name_m]Arne[/name_m]
[name_m]Eero[/name_m]

Other names you might like…
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Milo[/name_m]
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
[name_m]Jasper[/name_m]
[name_m]Asher[/name_m]
[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]

You could always find another name from your side of the family.

I do like the sound of [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m], but I understand you would like to incorporate something related to [name_m]Richard[/name_m].
There are several ways to go about it other than adding [name_m]Rick[/name_m].

  1. Meaning of [name_m]Richard[/name_m] “powerful/strong/brave leader” - there are tons of boy names with such meanings
    examples: [name_u]Neal[/name_u] / [name_m]Cedric[/name_m]/ [name_m]Derrick[/name_m]/ [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] / [name_m]Caleb[/name_m]/[name_m]Andrew[/name_m]/[name_m]Leo[/name_m]…
  2. Use the first initial R
    examples: [name_m]Roderick[/name_m]/ [name_m]Roland[/name_m]/ [name_m]Raymond[/name_m]
I will add some when I think of more

First off, popularity isn’t what it seems to be. I’m not sure what your concept of “too popular” is, but Liam would probably be fine. I can get more into the stats if you like but pretty much everyone today is driven to find a unique name for their kids so even the number #1 name isn’t that big. In the US, in 1985 the number one Michael was 3.3742% of births, whereas today the #1 Noah is 0.9043% of births, which is comparable to around #26 in 1985. And in some states Noah didn’t even make the top ten.

Sebastian is also a great name. As far as honoring goes, some people combine two people into one name, although John and Richard would be difficult. Something like Jarrick? or something. I think using two middles is a good idea.

Unique names that have a classic sound:
Alistair
Aidric
Justus
Emmanuel
Sinclair
Lennox
Callum
Crispin
Gideon

Classic and modern
Anthony
Malcolm
Maxwell
Patrick
Quentin
Graham
Elliot
Reid
Simon
Roman
Julian
Vincent
Wesley

Congratulations on the birth of your son. I hope you both are doing well and that he reasons for his early arrival don’t have any long-lasting consequences.

What is your last name like (starting and ending sounds, #of syllables)? Any other family names from your side besides your dad, [name_m]Richard[/name_m]?

You’re right that [name_m]Liam[/name_m] is extremely popular, the #2 name in the country. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] isn’t unique, it’s much much less common than [name_m]Liam[/name_m].

Something modern but classic and timeless, and not very common:

[name_m]Roderick[/name_m] (give this one a thought. It’s rare but not weird, an old Medieval English name with lots of history but still modern)
[name_m]Ronan[/name_m] (adorable Irish name meaning “little seal”)
[name_u]Rory[/name_u]
[name_m]Ross[/name_m]
[name_m]Roman[/name_m]
[name_m]Randolph[/name_m]

[name_m]Bennett[/name_m]
[name_m]Byron[/name_m]
[name_m]Davis[/name_m]
[name_m]Edmund[/name_m]
[name_m]Quentin[/name_m]
[name_m]Nolan[/name_m]
[name_m]Thaddeus[/name_m]
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m]
[name_u]Lawrence[/name_u]
[name_m]Wilson[/name_m]

I love [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]! I also like the name someone else suggest, [name_m]Atticus[/name_m]… [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] sounds good too! I

What about using both names in the middle? [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] or [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Richard[/name_m]
Or [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] instead of [name_m]John[/name_m]. [name_m]Sean[/name_m] and [name_m]Ian[/name_m] are forms of [name_m]John[/name_m] and [name_m]Jack[/name_m] is a popular nickname. You could use [name_m]Rickard[/name_m] instead of [name_m]Richard[/name_m]… It’s the Swedish form of [name_m]Richard[/name_m]. [name_m]Say[/name_m] it fast - rickerd. It is a beer brand where I live though. haha
Here are some names that you may like:
[name_m]Levi[/name_m]
[name_m]Eli[/name_m] (short for [name_u]Elias[/name_u] or [name_m]Elijah[/name_m])
[name_m]Leo[/name_m]
[name_m]Lochlan[/name_m]
[name_m]Landon[/name_m]
[name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Christian[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] have the same ending, so that is cute! I would pick [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] over [name_m]Liam[/name_m]. Congratulations and best of luck with your preemie!

I used to like [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] more, but they got so popular…

Instead of [name_m]Richard[/name_m], I like [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] and [name_m]Dixon[/name_m] (second middles?)

You like [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m] and [name_m]Grayson[/name_m], what about [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] or [name_m]Graham[/name_m]? [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] names and both sound good like this:

[name_m]Gordon[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]
[name_m]Graham[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]

or [name_m]Gordon[/name_m] [name_m]Dixon[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]
[name_m]Graham[/name_m] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m]

Best wishes!
[name_u]Leslie[/name_u]

PS I like [name_m]Granger[/name_m] too, which feels both old-timey and modern.
