Our baby name list: Which to keep and which to cross out

My boyfriend and I are expecting a most unexpected and very welcomed baby (we were told children weren’t on the cards for us). It’s a girl <3

We aren’t close enough to our families to use family names, but we also knew we weren’t going to come up with names out of nowhere. We lack that kind of creativity. Instead we went over a list of women we both admire and think are worthy of the honor of being our daughter’s namesake

Very quickly we agreed on Marvel, which we’re going to use as a middle name because it might be difficult to grow up with it as a first name.

For first names we have the following contenders:

Sophie, which is super common and I’m sure name experts are sick of it, but we’ve been long admirers of Sophie Scholl (formal name Sofia Magdalene) that we cannot ignore it.

Judith, as the Biblical Judith. We’re not religious but still think of her as a formidable woman. Even if it sounds very mid-century, we think its pretty.

Edith, for Edith Piaf. We bonded over our love for her music.

Ada, as in Ada Lovelace. My boyfriend is a computer engineer, so he feels particularly strong about this one.

Heloise, as the 12th century French abbess. It might be complicated because our last name also starts with H-E. However, we don’t like Eloise as an alternative.

Juliette, for Juliette Gordon Low. I was a girl scout and still love everything they stand for. I already fantasize about little X Marvel’s Girl Scout uniform, badges and excursions.

Please let us know which are your favorites and the ones you do not recommend.

All of these are highly recommended, but I would personally steer clear of [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]. She’s everywhere, and with [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] which is so in the wind due to the [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] Cinematic Universe, this feels very 2000. I would maybe call this the combo you’re mos likely to regret in 10 years time. (If you went with [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] [name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f], I would be all for though! It emphasises the honour aspect which I think is needed with such a common name.)

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] are on my own lists of these. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] is a little heavy sounding though, so I would opt for [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]. [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] has a bounce and rhythm that perks up [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] ^^
I also like [name_f]Heloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Ada[/name_f] and [name_f]Judith[/name_f], but I think [name_f]Judith[/name_f] has some of the same sonic issues as [name_f]Edith[/name_f]. [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] saw a fair share of use between 1900-30 so it has an old, dusty feel to me. I love that feel, but it becomes a little too much with [name_f]Judith[/name_f] or [name_f]Edith[/name_f] or even [name_f]Ada[/name_f]. I prefer Lovelace to [name_f]Ada[/name_f], maybe save it as the greatest middle for a potential sister? (I’m dreaming of [name_f]Heloise[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] Lovelace in your future, that would be an incredibly gorgeous sister-set!)

I would love [name_f]Heloise[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] or [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]. [name_f]Heloise[/name_f] is also gorgeous, it’s a name I’m beginning to warm up to myself, I’ve been avoiding her just because I see [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] everywhere and grow tired of her. But there’s something about [name_f]Heloise[/name_f] that just makes me smile.

And I wanted to mention that I really love how you went about this, sitting down and finding inspiration from women you admire is such a sweet way to make a list of possible names. I love that this was your first instinct ^^

First, congratulations on your baby girl! That’s the best kind of surprise. I love the list of names you’ve picked out, both for their meanings and their sounds. However, some definitely stand out to me more than others.

[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] Scholl was an incredibly brave young woman, and I understand wanting to honor her. Plus [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] is everywhere for a reason - it’s adorable! That won’t said, it is absolutely true that your daughter would not be the only [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] in her class. You just need to think really seriously if it would bother you for her to grow up being “[name_f]Sophie[/name_f] H.”

[name_f]Judith[/name_f] feels so dated and not yet ready for a comeback. [name_f]Trudy[/name_f] is cute, but [name_f]Judy[/name_f] still sounds very PTA to me. [name_f]Edith[/name_f], on the other hand, is perfectly vintage and in-style. I can just imagine your little [name_f]Edie[/name_f] in her Brownies uniform!

Which brings me to [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], which is a fine name, but does nothing special for me. I believe that’s just personal taste, however, and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] does sound nice.

[name_f]Ada[/name_f] is another favorite of mine. [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] is such a cool name!! [name_f]Ada[/name_f] fits in with all the little Avas and Addies but retains a sense of individuality. It’s a strong name that remains sweet and feminine.

[name_f]Heloise[/name_f] is beautiful, but I would steer clear of comic-booky alliteration with the middle name [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]. Also, I’m at a bit of a loss for nicknames.

Overall, these are all wonderful but my picks for you are either [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] or perhaps [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f].

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Piaf[/name_f] is a wonderful namesake - and what a beautiful name.

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] absolutely gets my vote

My favorite is [name_f]Ada[/name_f] by far! [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] is amazing. [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] is my second favorite and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is my third.
I think you can ditch [name_f]Judith[/name_f], [name_f]Heloise[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f].
Congratulations on your daughter! I love that you’re thinking about the meaning behind the name and how that translates to the woman you hope your daughter will be. Good luck choosing

Sorry! Forgot to say which I would scrap: [name_f]Heloise[/name_f].

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]/[name_f]Sophia[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]? I would not use [name_f]Judith[/name_f], especially if you are not religious. [name_f]Edith[/name_f] is fine but not very pretty. [name_f]Ada[/name_f] feels short. If you would like to honour [name_f]Ada[/name_f] Lovelace, how about [name_f]Augusta[/name_f]? I would not use [name_f]Heloise[/name_f]. [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] reminds me a lot of [name_m]Romeo[/name_m] and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Sofia[/name_f]/[name_f]Sophia[/name_f], [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] and [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] although I am not in favour of using the last one. I would not recommend the others.

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] and [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] are stunning! Those two are definitely my favorites.

I love [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] and [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]! Congratulations on your little girl, that’s such exciting news

Warmest Congratulations to you on the imminent arrival of your little [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]! I simply cannot go past the idea of honouring [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] Scholl! Personally I would go with [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f], Nickname [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], as it sounds BEAUTIFUL and is less common and more specific to [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] [name_f]Magdalena[/name_f] Scholl, especially with the shared M middle initial!

My favourite name is [name_f]Judith[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f]. I’d also consider [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Heloise[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] I love the look and flow.

Thank you, truly, for your good wishes and congratulations

After reading your replies and taking notes (yes, notes) I think [name_f]Judith[/name_f] might be benched. Thank you for voting for it anyagreenwich! I still like it, but maybe more people will see it as dated and not so out there it’s cool, and I do want our child to like her name. Fingers crossed.

I don’t think my boyfriend will be supportive of three names. I had to use my veto powers to get two. He wanted to use only one! As if he were to be charged per letter at the registry. I do like [name_f]Ada[/name_f] [name_f]Heloise[/name_f] [name_f]Marvel[/name_f], but sadly she is not to be.

I’m so unsure about [name_f]Sophie[/name_f]/[name_f]Sofia[/name_f]. The history of the White [name_f]Rose[/name_f] often moves me to tears. Then again, our baby is indeed going to be [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] H. everywhere she goes. My boyfriend was nickname [name_m]Troy[/name_m] through his high school years, and while he didn’t hate it, I’ve always been the only me and I’ve got to say I didn’t envy [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] and [name_f]Melanie[/name_f] from school and the playground, even if they were in good company.

However, I really enjoyed reading your contributions on [name_f]Juliette[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Ada[/name_f]. I don’t mind the little extra dust on the last two. I see it for sure; It’s like we are naming a person from the 1920’s when we pair either one with [name_f]Marvel[/name_f].

Thank you again for your comments and the good vibrations <3
