My boyfriend and I are expecting our first baby in the end of [name]March[/name] (we don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet), and we have worked out a top 15 + 8 list. We are both artists and we love nature, and we want a name that conjures images of trees and water and green & blue things… We are not telling our friends and families about our names, we don’t want them to say mean things. However, we want you to speak your mind, good, bad and ugly!
We have been through a lot of baby name books, and basically everywhere on the internet (we think) but if you have any suggestions we’d love to hear them!
I can’t spell these names so I’m going to sound them out, hopefully you’ll know what I mean.
[name]Per[/name]-Sef-On-Eee
[name]Perce[/name]-[name]Per[/name]-Own
Ill-If-Eee-[name]Ah[/name]
Dem-Eat-[name]Ah[/name]
Are-[name]Kay[/name]-[name]Dee[/name]-[name]Ah[/name]
[name]Ah[/name]-Raid-Eee-[name]Ah[/name]
Im-Or-[name]Ah[/name]
These are the ones I like & why:
[name]Indigo[/name] ~ Quirky name, but one that everyone can recognise and spell! [name]Love[/name] the sound of it.
[name]Joy[/name] ~ Obviously a name that brings happiness! [name]Lovely[/name] =)
[name]Peridot[/name] ~ More unusual name but I think the pronunciation is really pretty. However, not everyone will be able to say/spell this without asking first. Great as a middle name perhaps?
[name]Phoebe[/name] ~ [name]Adore[/name] this name! =) [name]Love[/name] the Greek roots, however it does remind a lot of people of [name]Phoebe[/name] from Friends.
I love [name]Indigo[/name]! We almost named our daughter [name]Indigo[/name] but went for [name]India[/name] in the end, as it had more meaning to us.
[name]Alcyone[/name] is lovely which makes me think of [name]Halcyon[/name].
Actually [name]Halcyon[/name] seems the perfect name for you guys as it’s nature, green and blue and water all summed up as a kingfisher! pretty neat I think.
I also like [name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Phoebe[/name], my friend had a [name]Phoebe[/name] 3 weeks ago and it’s such a lovely name. the Friends association is so quickly forgotten.
[name]Juniper[/name] - Quirky and spunky
[name]Melusine[/name] - Romantic French name
[name]Circe[/name] - [name]One[/name] of my favourite Greek mythological names
[name]Peridot[/name] - An uncommon gem name
[name]Phoebe[/name] - Sweet and spunky
I like…
[name]Alcyone[/name] - Unfortunately, there is a insomia drug that is quite similar to this name and that association kind of taints the name for me.
[name]Clemency[/name] - Sweet and pretty
[name]Domino[/name] - A cool sounding name
[name]Indigo[/name] - I prefer this name for a boy. It’s a major book chain in [name]Canada[/name].
[name]Joy[/name] - For the middle spot only. [name]Thalassa[/name] [name]Joy[/name]?
[name]Thalassa[/name] - An underused Greek mythological name that I find appealing.
[name]Amoret[/name] - [name]Unique[/name] and evocative
Eupheme - I love this French version of [name]Euphemia[/name] even if it sounds a bit like a short form of euphemism.
[name]Eurydice[/name] - [name]May[/name] have spelling and pronunciation issues but I like it.
I dislike…
[name]Keren[/name] - Alternative spelling for [name]Karen[/name] doesn’t make it any less “dated”
[name]Liberty[/name] - Like the definition but just gives me the image of the [name]Liberty[/name] [name]Bell[/name].
Rozenn - I prefer just [name]Rose[/name] to this strange looking [name]Breton[/name] name.
[name]Socorro[/name] - Not my favourite Spanish name.
[name]Tindra[/name] - Reminds me of trees, timber and tundra but not in a good way. Sounds kind of weak and lacking in substance.
[name]Vesper[/name] - I hate snakes and this name is harsh and reminds me of the word “viper”.
[name]Lorca[/name] - It has a tragic literary connection and it’s too much like Orca.
Steren - Looks like a smoosh of [name]Steven[/name] and [name]Seren[/name].
[name]Tempest[/name] - Too similar to Temptress.
[name]Alcyone[/name] (al-[name]SIE[/name]-ə-nee) – This is a lot of name to have such few consonant sounds. I know if I were to use it, I would get constant complaints from my family. It would be uncomfortably unfamiliar to my region, and I think it would end up doing more harm than good, as it will most likely be very difficult for people to spell and pronounce.
[name]Circe[/name] (SUR-see) – This reminds me of the circus, but not in a good way.
[name]Clemency[/name] – The french Clémence is more appealing to me. Or even [name]Clementine[/name], I guess. All I can think about when I look at [name]Clemency[/name] is the death penalty. Maybe good for a superhero, but I don’t think it works as well on a child.
[name]Domino[/name] – Talk about your secret agent name. A lot of these names have so much appeal, and I can see how they would appeal particularly to artists, but in the real world I just don’t know what I would think if I met a little girl named [name]Domino[/name].
[name]Indigo[/name] – This is lovely! [name]Indigo[/name] is my favorite on your list. I think it’s a color name that doesn’t get enough attention, so I’m not tired of seeing it.
[name]Joy[/name] – This seems a little common and out of place after looking at some of the other names, but I like it. It reminds me of [name]Joyce[/name], which reminds me of [name]James[/name] [name]Joyce[/name], and he’s a favorite of mine.
[name]Keren[/name] – This is very “history lesson” to me. It reminds me of [name]Keren[/name], Eritrea and the World War II battle that happened there.
[name]Liberty[/name] – This is a name that I think would be considered very low class in [name]America[/name], but I’m not sure how it would be received in [name]England[/name].
[name]Melusine[/name] – The “sine” ending does not appeal to me at all. It reminds me of Porcine, for some reason.
[name]Peridot[/name] – Another lovely color name! I love the spelling and the pronunciation of this word, and I think it would make a lovely name. I also think enough people are familiar with the gem that it won’t cause any confusion.
[name]Phoebe[/name] – I never really liked the sound of [name]Phoebe[/name], and after the tv show Friends I just have a hard time imagining it as a serious name.
Rozenn – My husband actually has a name very similar to this, so when I look at the first syllable I see [name]Roz[/name] rhyming with [name]Oz[/name] instead of [name]Roz[/name] rhyming with [name]Rose[/name]. I imagine the correct pronunciation has it rhyming with [name]Rose[/name]? This may be difficult for a lot of people, but it is a pretty name.
[name]Socorro[/name] – My aunt has a Chihuahua named [name]Socorro[/name] (boy) and she call’s him Soco. I have a cousin who spent some time in [name]Socorro[/name], NM, so I also think of this. I don’t think I like this name.
[name]Tindra[/name] ([name]TIN[/name]-drə) – Another favorite on your list! It reminds me of [name]Christmas[/name]/[name]Winter[/name] (probably because of tinsel). This could work really well.
[name]Vesper[/name]-- I’ve never understood the appeal of this name, but plenty of Berries seem to like it from its use in other threads. It’s at least very usable, I don’t see your family opposing too much.
As for the others, I really like [name]Lorca[/name]. I do not like [name]Tempest[/name], even though I do love the meaning. It just reminds me too much of Temptress.
My favorites from the list are;
[name]Clemency[/name]
[name]Indigo[/name]
Rozenn
[name]Vesper[/name] (Although I cannot see this being used in real life, it seems a bit too story book for my taste!)
I absolutely [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Eurydice[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name]. They are so beautiful and fair, I have only heard [name]Eurydice[/name] once before in my life but I think it is so elegant!
Some of your choices are very bold, but many people may have issues with spelling and pronouncing them! So make sure that isn’t an issue if you chose some of the more imaginative names!
I like [name]Indigo[/name] lots! I’m not sure whether the t in [name]Peridot[/name] is silent but it looks pretty written down. I like [name]Keren[/name] and [name]Joy[/name] for middles. I like that someone suggested [name]Halcyon[/name] which I think fits the bill. I suggest [name]Nola[/name].
[name]Alcyone[/name] - [name]Even[/name] with the guide I just don’t get the pronunciation I think you would have a lot of trouble with this one
[name]Circe[/name] - I think this one is so cute! My only fear is how it would age
[name]Clemency[/name] - I prefer [name]Clementine[/name] but still sweet
[name]Domino[/name] - I actually met a little girl named [name]Domino[/name], she is a real firecracker but honestly my first thought is the Pizza chain
[name]Indigo[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]!!
[name]Joy[/name] - I love the feel it gives but it seems so drab as a name for some reason
[name]Keren[/name] - I like it
[name]Liberty[/name] - This might be a little hard to where but I like it
[name]Melusine[/name] - NMS, it seems like it would be really hard to pull off
[name]Peridot[/name] - I am seeing this one on a lot of lists lately, I see the appeal but it is jut not for me
[name]Phoebe[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name]!! I am so in love with [name]Phoebe[/name] at the moment
Rozenn - The double N at the end just throws me off
[name]Socorro[/name] - IDK why but I cannot picture this on a girl it seems so masculine
[name]Tindra[/name] ([name]TIN[/name]-drə) - a very cute twist on [name]Kendra[/name]
[name]Vesper[/name] - I actually like this one a lot too.
[name]Amoret[/name] - I kinda like this one
Eupheme - I prefer [name]Euphemia[/name] but I can see the appeal of this one
[name]Eurydice[/name] - I don’t think this one would be easy to wear
[name]Juniper[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] I think [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Juniper[/name] would be a stunning combo
[name]Lorca[/name] - I think [name]Laura[/name] would be better
Steren - this just reminds me of [name]Stephen[/name]
[name]Tempest[/name] - I can see the appeal maybe better as an MN
[name]Thalassa[/name] - I just see Tallahassee sorry!
The problem with the names [name]Alcyone[/name], [name]Circe[/name], [name]Tindra[/name], Eupheme, and [name]Eurydice[/name] is that they are all hard to pronounce! Without you guides, I would have been lost. This could be a burden on your child. Maybe use one as a middle name if you’re dead set on it? It seems that you like vintage, natural, and quirky names. (I like those too!) Here are my suggestions:
Thanks so much everyone! You are being so helpful.
jodi: I love [name]Persephone[/name]! Thank you.
jessicalucy: Thank you, you have the same favourites as my boyfriend!
mini: [name]Halcyon[/name] was on the list, but [name]Alcyone[/name] has the myth meaning as well. She was a girl turned into a kingfisher in greek mythology.
mischa: I love [name]Thalassa[/name] [name]Joy[/name]! Beautiful combo. [name]Keren[/name] is actually a legitimate hebrew name, not a version of [name]Karen[/name]. Thank you for all your comments.
dovah: [name]Tindra[/name] is swedish for “to twinkle”! Thanks for your very thorough comments (and you made me laugh a few times!)
whirigig: Thank you, I love [name]Peridot[/name] (you can actually pronounce it both with and without the -t, I think with is spunkiest!).
dillonsfan01: [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Juniper[/name] is beautiful! Thank you for this suggestion and all your comments.
watermellie: Thank you! I know some of them are a bit… out there.
carolinagirl: [name]Willow[/name] is my favourite girls name ever! Unfortunately it is horrible with our last names (both very w-heavy) and my boyfriend’s name is [name]Will[/name]. I love [name]Eunice[/name], [name]Thalia[/name], [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Ivy[/name] and [name]Iris[/name]!
[name]Phoebe[/name], [name]Peridot[/name], [name]Keren[/name], [name]Indigo[/name], [name]Clemency[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name] are all gorgeous!
My least favourites are; [name]Socorro[/name], Rozenn, [name]Melusine[/name], Steren, [name]Circe[/name] (pronunciation issue) and [name]Alcyone[/name] (I just see Cyclone lol).
[name]Alcyone[/name] (al-[name]SIE[/name]-ə-nee) -> I love the sound but it always looks like a letter jumble to me.
[name]Circe[/name] (SUR-see) -> always makes me think of circus. (And not the greek mythological seductress like I feel it should) though circuses are fun and colorful and might be just what you are after. lol.
[name]Clemency[/name] - This feels a little buttoned up and tame in comparison to your other choices.
[name]Indigo[/name] - I love this. It’s one of my favorite colors and I love the color, nature and fun feel it gives me.
[name]Joy[/name] - absolutely beautiful.
[name]Phoebe[/name] - love. Feels maybe a little ordinary for you.
[name]Vesper[/name] - this feels like a great alternative to [name]Phoebe[/name]. Somehow they have a similar vibe to me but this is a little edgier and artsier.
[name]Eurydice[/name] - I’d love to meet a little [name]Eurydice[/name] [name]Joy[/name]. I think the myth that [name]Eurydice[/name] is tied to is perfect for an artistic couple (despite the fact that it’s a little sad).
[name]Juniper[/name] - First thing I think of is [name]Gin[/name] the Prohibition and some great Prohibition parties. (I work PT in a restaurant). [name]Love[/name] the name, though I am hearing it a lot lately. I still think it’s fresh and green and fun.
[name]Tempest[/name] - I wish I was gutsy enough to use [name]Tempest[/name]. It’s vibrant and fun, and spunky. However, should your daughter end up being quite this might be a big name to live up to.
[name]Alcyone[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Eurydice[/name] I love this one!
[name]Juniper[/name] not my style at all… but I like the sound a lot
I want to like [name]Circe[/name] but what comes to my mind when I think of it is pigs.
[name]Thalassa[/name] has a beautiful meaning and history, but I don’t like the sound.
[name]Tempest[/name] is another fascinating but not my style name.
[name]Clemency[/name]- Absolutely adorable! So simple and pretty, I really like it.
[name]Domino[/name]- At first I didn’t like it but the more a I say [name]Domino[/name] out loud the more I see the appeal and fall for it.
[name]Liberty[/name]- I just think this is adorable. Common but I’ve only met one or two so at least where I’m from it isn’t crazy popular.
[name]Peridot[/name]- [name]Love[/name]! This is probably one of my favorites from your list.
[name]Phoebe[/name]- Darling, sweet and gentle with spunk.
[name]Amoret[/name]- This is definitely my favorite!
[name]Juniper[/name]- Pretty and soft. But the -er ending adds strength.
[name]Thalassa[/name]- Simply just cool haha! [name]Love[/name] the suggestion of [name]Thalassa[/name] [name]Joy[/name]!
I absolutely love your style and list though. So many interesting names! Congrats:)
Hmm I like [name]Clemency[/name], and really like [name]Joy[/name] - would love to see that name make a comeback! I like [name]Liberty[/name], but in my opinion, it depends where you live - outside the US I think it’s sweet, in the US I feel like it has certain overtones
