I heard a Swedish place/name today and thought it had the sort of ethereal sound that you are looking for: Faviken.
Dear lord how many beautiful names, I adore almost all of your choices!
Favourites (ones I would love to use myself)
[name]Ariadne[/name] - Wonderful mythological ties, I really like it but I have to admit it seems less distinctive compared to your other choices. I like [name]Adie[/name] as a possible nickname, [name]Ari[/name] seems very boy-ish to me which it probably will to other Norwegians as well.
[name]Demeter[/name] - I love [name]Demeter[/name]. I used to love [name]Ceres[/name] more, but [name]Demeter[/name] somehow won through. I don’t like [name]Demi[/name] as a nickname though, I came up with Ditty as a possible alternative the other day but I’m uncertain if it actually works. I like the band The Ditty Bops, so that’s my association.
Dracaena - I saw this here earlier and added it to my list at once, it’s been a while since I had that reaction to a name on these boards
I love the elaborate sound and how it looks.
[name]Eurydice[/name] - Have you heard the album ‘Hadestown’ by [name]Ana[/name]ïs [name]Mitchell[/name]? It’s a ‘folk-opera’, a variation on the [name]Orpheus[/name] and [name]Eurydice[/name] myth, with different people singing the various characters, I think it was also originally a stage show. It’s fabulous, and since you like both [name]Eurydice[/name] and [name]Orpheus[/name] you’ll possibly like it as well? That’s what the names remind me of and I think it’s delightful ^^
Endellion - I like how this rolls off the tongue, enchanting.
Everild - I love this as a spin on all the -hild names in my family. None of the traditionally used ones are very appealing to me (except Alvilde perhaps), so Everild is a way for me to honour that in a way I’m comfortable with. The one on your list I would most likely to acually use
[name]Fiammetta[/name] - I’m maybe using this for a character in a novel I might someday write, I absolutely adore it along with [name]Etta[/name] for a nickname. I really love names related to fire ^^
[name]Halcyon[/name] - I love how many different associations it has. My first though is of music like it always is, [name]Ellie[/name] Goulding just released and album called ‘[name]Halcyon[/name]’ and [name]Siobhan[/name] Donaghy has a song called ‘[name]Halcyon[/name] Days’. Then I think of Kingfisher birds and the film ‘The [name]Fisher[/name] [name]King[/name]’ which I love. Onwards my thoughts end up in mythology. I realise I should probably be associating the other way around XD
Ludivine - I only recently understood this, I never liked it before but somehow I think it’s just wonderfully sweet now.
[name]Melusine[/name] - I recently re-read Danish writer [name]Lene[/name] Kaaberbøl’s “Shamer Chronicles”, amazing fantasy literature for tweens and main character [name]Dina[/name]'s mother is called Melussina which is perhaps overly elaborate, but it reminded me of my love for [name]Melusine[/name]. Goregous name!
Melpomene - [name]One[/name] of my favourite ‘almost too clunky and difficult bordering on ridiculous’ names from Greek Mythology. I’ve never seen anyone else consider it tough, I love that you do ^^ I love how rounded it is, no sharp sounds
Niniane - I love this, but I love Nimue more. Nyneve is also beautiful, I love how they’re all dripping with history, so intriguing making me want to learn more!
[name]Ourania[/name] - This spelling is my favourite, and although I have a lot of O names I love more, [name]Ourania[/name] is wonderful. Potential nickname [name]Nia[/name] is also amazing ^^
[name]Pomona[/name] - This has a very motherly feel for me, reminds me of home-baked goods and someone who cares about you. A favourite!
Proserpine ([name]Persephone[/name]) - I love [name]Persephone[/name] more, but I do love Proserpine as well, perhaps more as Proserpina. The story of [name]Persephone[/name] is so complex, every time I read up on it I get new perspectives. A rich name.
[name]Thalassa[/name] - I like this more than [name]Thessaly[/name], I love how regal it sounds and I do think ‘force of nature’ when I hear it. Awesome!
[name]Vesper[/name] - My love for [name]Vesper[/name] might be fading, but I still adore it. It’s popping up everywhere these days. For another musical connection, singer [name]Deb[/name] Oh has a song called [name]Vesper[/name] that I really like, it’s one of the reasons I’m not turned off by [name]Vesper[/name]'s numerous mentions on these boards.
Viatrix - The ‘traveler’ meaning is wonderful, reminds me of Old Norse Leid meaning ‘pathfinder’. Viatrix was one of my favourites for a long time but recently I’ve been really into more rounded names so the X doesn’t quite fit in
Choosing 5: Melpomene, Everild, [name]Thalassa[/name], Niniane, Ludivine. OR Viatrix, [name]Melusine[/name], [name]Fiammetta[/name], [name]Ariadne[/name], Endellion.
From your second list I also adore Illyria, [name]Sirocco[/name], [name]Pandora[/name], Erato, [name]Antigone[/name], [name]Atalanta[/name], Leto, Ishtar, [name]Dione[/name], Polyhymnia (or Polymnia), [name]Theia[/name], [name]Nephele[/name], [name]Eos[/name], [name]Psyche[/name] and Mythily
A new combo of 5 comes to mind if I include these: Leto, [name]Halcyon[/name], Ishtar, [name]Eos[/name], [name]Psyche[/name]/[name]Vesper[/name].
I’m considering using both Leto and Ishtar in another story I might someday write…
If you want more suggestions, I’d be happy to oblige, but I can’t see how you’ll manage to narrow down your list, I’m not sure you need to add more names… ^^
[name]One[/name] thing, Mimir is not a Norse god of spring but of [name]Wisdom[/name], his name means ‘the rememberer’. And he is a god, not a goddess.
Idunn is considered the Norse goddess of spring or rejuvenation since she is the guardian of the apples maintaining the immortality of the gods.
And another, is the Sophus you know Norwegian?
I love [name]Lorelei[/name], [name]Persephone[/name], and [name]Vesper[/name]
I like [name]Ceres[/name], [name]Halcyon[/name], and [name]Persephone[/name].
dearest: Thank you for all your lovely comments! I adore [name]Ana[/name]ïs [name]Mitchell[/name], Hadestown is an amazing record (i think we’ve got about the same taste in music, I saw you mention [name]Tori[/name] [name]Amos[/name] earlier, I love her!)!! Everild is one of my favourites, it has a lot in common with the norwegian -ild names, and in my head, when I say it, I hear ever fire, which is cute. I think I like [name]Persephone[/name] more than Proserpine, but boyfriend feels the other way… Thanks for clearing up the Mimir thing, I thought to myself, why have I never heard of her… it makes sense now. I like the name Idunn as well! If you’ve got suggestions we’d love to hear them, we have yet to fall head over heels with a name like we did with [name]Endymion[/name] for a boy. And, yes, Sophus is norwegian! Brother of Solvei.
Thank you all for your comments, very helpful!
Wowzah! I like:
[name]Ariadne[/name]
Everild
Fiametta
[name]Lorca[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name]
[name]Thalassa[/name]
[name]Vesper[/name]
Viatrix
Illyria
[name]Lilith[/name]/Lilitu
[name]Eudora[/name]
[name]Atalanta[/name]
[name]Dione[/name]
[name]Xanthe[/name]
[name]Jezabel[/name]
[name]Nephele[/name]
[name]Eos[/name]
and Belphoebe.
Hecate (“Heckatee”) is a witchy name I’m loving lately that seems to be in keeping with your style. Any interest?
Wanted to finish!
[name]Lorca[/name] or [name]Lorelei[/name]: I don’t care for the phonetics of either name. [name]Lorelei[/name] has the haunting aquatic connection you’re looking for, but it is rather akin to naming your child ‘siren.’ I think too the popularity of the [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls has given this name wider currency than you’re looking for. As for [name]Lorca[/name]-- it’s a Spanish surname. Not nearly as inspiring as your other choices. Perhaps if moved to the middle spot, where you’re looking to honor an artist?
Lùthien or Ludivine: the accent will be lost, and Luthien will be frequently misheard and/or identified with [name]Luther[/name]. I like the old -win / -wine / -vin / -wyn names, I really do, but Ludivine to me isn’t among the loveliest. I think it’s the initial syllabe, Lud-rhymes-with-rude. Perhaps Maewyn (traditionally a male name, the given name of St [name]Patrick[/name]); [name]Selwyn[/name] (same), or switching the sound and the namesake to Liduvina?
[name]Melusine[/name] or Melpomene: I don’t think the latter is usable, as it will be reliable mispronounced as [name]Mel[/name]-pom-een. [name]Melusine[/name] is a haunting namesake, very pretty in sound, as long as the outcome in the legend doesn’t bother you.
Moriko: the -ko names in Japan were enormously popular from the 50s-80s and are now considered extremely dated. I think other forest-y choices are better.
Niniane: I know I suggested it but I really do love it. It has a beautiful legendary origin (with good associations, no baggage!); the aesthetics of the name are lovely; and it’s relatively easy to spell and pronounce.
[name]Ourania[/name]: Urine + Uranus. The playground would destroy this one.
[name]Pomona[/name]: besides the prominent ‘moan’, it’s very sweet; more domestic than wild, however. I think it would suffer the same difficulties as [name]Ramona[/name], though.
Proserpine ([name]Persephone[/name]?): Prefer [name]Persephone[/name]. Proserpine looks quite similar to porcupine! It, too, will be mispronounced. [name]Persephone[/name] is outre as it is. Most of your list is Greek anyway!
Saturnina: ‘saturnine’ is a purple adjective in relatively common circulation meaning gloomy, dour & mournful. [name]Saturn[/name] is also a car company in addition to the ringed planet and god of the underworld. I would cross this one off.
[name]Sequoia[/name]: this is a very hippy-ish name here in [name]California[/name], where the sequoias actually are. It has beautiful phonetics and in the UK I imagine it would be a striking and original choice. However, it’s not quite as deep or evocative as your other, more multifaceted options.
[name]Tempest[/name]: it’s a beautiful word-name. I prefer the heroine/mythology names as again, they’re more evocative and deep, but it’s still lovely. Bonus Shakespearean associations, obviously.
[name]Thalassa[/name]: I do worry about the -ass sound (as well as possible homophony with molasses). I thought [name]Pelagia[/name] had prettier aesthetics. What about other sea associations, like Tethys, [name]Meriel[/name], [name]Nereida[/name]?
[name]Vesper[/name]: I find this a quirky choice and a little out of keeping from your other options. It is consciously [name]Christian[/name], as it means the ceremony for evening prayers. As you have names like Dusk on your middles list, I would go that route.
Viatrix: Prefer [name]Beatrix[/name] simply for its familiarity and non-pharmaceutical vibe. Viagra? people might hear, and 11-yo boys will certainly taunt.
From the second list:
YES
Illyria: has all of the qualities you’re trying to evoke: that mysterious, half-legendary, wild feeling.
[name]Eudora[/name]: lovely, great meaning for your baby; familiar.
[name]Sirocco[/name]: it’s a hot desert wind, the opposite of zephyr; it causes a great deal of destruction. If you like the meaning, it works.
[name]Atalanta[/name]: I like the legend, though it might be confused for the city in [name]Georgia[/name].
[name]Keturah[/name]: sweet, though I personally always confuse it with the Jewish wedding contract ‘ketubah.’ I prefer your other, more evocative choices.
[name]Xanthe[/name]: only if you expect [name]Baby[/name] to be blonde!
Polyhymnia: beautiful namesake, but perhaps a bit clunky for everyday use.
[name]Thalia[/name]: muse of history. I love its sound, and it hits the sweet spot between uncommon but still familiar enough to register.
[name]Nephele[/name]: the cloud-nymph is too beautiful to leave off, despite expected difficulties with pronunciation and spelling.
Merioneth: beautiful; obviously not an option with brother Merrion.
Cyrene: like [name]Thalia[/name], lovely and strikes the right balance.
NO:
Erato: the muse of erotic poetry, the source of the word ‘erotic,’ and meaning ‘to desire.’ Hmm.
[name]Lilith[/name], [name]Jezebel[/name] and Ishtar are some heavy, heavy namesakes. Ishtar is a sexual choice-- a fertility goddess; [name]Lilith[/name] is commonly protrayed as a man-devouring demon; [name]Jezebel[/name] was the original bad girl killed for her wickedness and promiscuity.
[name]Psyche[/name]: the [name]Cupid[/name] and [name]Psyche[/name] myth is gorgeous, but as you know this is completely unusable. Psycho?
Mythily: a lisping mouthful. [name]Myfanwy[/name] could work…
[name]Pandora[/name]: the online music streaming site? “[name]Pandora[/name]'s box” is a common phrase, which could take a second, sexual meaning upon adolescence.
[name]Antigone[/name]: I think the play is familiar enough that her name should be pronounced correctly. [name]Antigone[/name] was a strong, admirable character, though things didn’t turn out too well for her (hanging herself after being walled up and all). However, the backstory of incest and the meaning (“against motherhood”) kills it for me completely.
Leto: too rape-y for me, sorry.
Venatrix, [name]Dione[/name], Euterpe Perimede are too unfamiliar and their pronunciations will be mangled, I fear.
emmabobemma: Thank you! Hecate is gorgeous! I like the witchy-ness of it. It might be a little too harsh though, but I’m definitely putting it on our maybe list! And thank you for picking your fav’s, Everild is one of my absolute favourites, I like it more and more everytime I see and say it.
blade: Thank you for the thoughtful comments (again). We are doing a BIG edit now, throwing a bunch out (and I don’t think we’re adding any…) [name]Psyche[/name] and [name]Eros[/name] is my favourite myth, I just can’t find a nice name to use from it… I know [name]Psyche[/name] is out there, I can’t use it (we’ve got quite a few psychiatrists in the family as well). We are definitely keeping Niniane! And I think Merioneth might win over Merrion. But we’ll see. [name]Pelagia[/name]; I forgot about this one! That’s what happens when you scribble notes on tiny pieces of paper! I do love [name]Antigone[/name], but I hate parts of the story. The meaning of the name doesn’t bother me, [name]Persephone[/name] means something awful (can’t remember exactly what) but the myth is so powerful that it’s ok. You made some good points. I knew I couldn’t name a daughter Erato, I just love the muses so much… and I didn’t even think of the “box” thing with [name]Pandora[/name]. I just love the name (and her myth as well). Anyway, thank you so much!
edit: I think our child will be blonde, I’m the only one in my family with dark hair and my boyfriend (and his whole family) are blonde. So I imagine our children with thick, blonde, wavy hair…
All the names are great I just wanted to add a few comments. I know 2 Sequoias and no one says anything to them about SUVs. Also i have a friend name [name]Melusine[/name], no one can say her name she always says, “[name]Melusine[/name] like limousine”. Best of luck!
PLEASE use [name]Robin[/name] on aboy swoons I love [name]Robin[/name] on a boy.
I’d use one these if I were you:
[name]Circe[/name] - GP I don’t like what it’s associated with.
[name]Ceres[/name]
[name]Eurydice[/name]
[name]Alcyone[/name] - I much prefer [name]Halcyon[/name] on a boy.
[name]Persephone[/name]
Saturnina - [name]Saturn[/name] yes, Saturnina not so much.
[name]Thalassa[/name]
[name]Tempest[/name]
I love these but boys only:
[name]Halcyon[/name]
[name]Hippolyte[/name]
Isn’t [name]Robin[/name] to die for? So cute!
First of all; the biggest thank you from both of us for taking all this time responding to our craziness. We are so grateful, and you’ve made the narrowing down easier! Thank you!!!
Here’s our edited list:
[name]Alcyone[/name]/[name]Halcyon[/name] (can’t decide!)
[name]Circe[/name]
Everild
[name]Eudora[/name]
Ferelith
Fiametta
[name]Idony[/name]/Idunn
Illyria
[name]Lilith[/name]
Liriope
Luthien/Lorien
Merioneth
Mythily
Niniane
[name]Nephele[/name]
[name]Ophelia[/name]
[name]Persephone[/name]/Proserpine
Polyhymnia
[name]Vesper[/name]
Xante
[name]Eurydice[/name] (maybe my favourite!) is being moved to the middle, because of our love for [name]Endymion[/name].
We also love [name]Naiad[/name], [name]Echo[/name], Syrinx and Iynx - are they too out there (I know, me asking) for a first?
(We think we’ve got a decent list now, but if there is anything you think we’ll love, please tell us!)
What about [name]Odile[/name], [name]Delphine[/name], or [name]Lux[/name]
My middle name is [name]Ottilie[/name], what most people here calls me, so [name]Odile[/name] is too close. [name]Lux[/name] we love, but surname is one syllable (it’s on our middle list)! [name]Delphine[/name] is very pretty, but I am one of those weird people who hate dolphins. [name]Delphine[/name] sounds like dolphin to me. Thank you so much, though!
I do like [name]Tori[/name] [name]Amos[/name]
From your updated list I love [name]Alcyone[/name]/[name]Halcyon[/name], Everild, [name]Fiammetta[/name], [name]Idony[/name]/Idunn, Illyria, Liriope!, Niniane, [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Persephone[/name], Polyhymnia (although I do prefer the more streamlined Polymnia) and [name]Vesper[/name].
The ones I’m not too fond of are [name]Eudora[/name] and [name]Xanthe[/name]. I never really fell for the -dora sound, and there’s [name]Dora[/name], the mean stepsister in my favourite [name]Christmas[/name] film ‘Three Wishes for [name]Cinderella[/name]’ (Three Nuts in Norwegian) they show every [name]Christmas[/name] [name]Eve[/name] here. Eu+dora is a little much for me, I think the Eu- sound benefits from something more melliflous at the end. Eumelia is my favourite. [name]Xanthe[/name] seems too commonplace. It’s sort of an expected exotic like [name]Beatrix[/name] or [name]Juniper[/name], most of your other choices seem more distinguished and creative.
From all of [name]Blade[/name]'s comments I realise I know way too little about all the mythologcal names I like so much. I’m not as knowledgable, and I’m sure if I make a suggestion with an inappropriate history attached to it someone will pick up on it. I’m also not enough of a feminist to find [name]Leda[/name] and Leto unusable, although I do see why some would.
My first thought was to suggest O names, I love those for you (and for myself) but I see you’re hesitant to use something too close to [name]Ottilie[/name] which kind of rules out [name]Ondine[/name], Olallie, [name]Olivine[/name] and Oenone, my first instincts. I also considered the name Ovidia. It’s seen some usage in Norway about 100 years or more back, and it’s sort of coming back in style alongside [name]Ottilie[/name] but still far behind (along with Olava and I’m seeing more mentions of my own favourite [name]Oleanna[/name]). Ovidia has a subtle mythological connection via [name]Ovid[/name], and a Norwegian connection since it’s been used here more than most places. I also like that it’s connected to [name]Ottilie[/name] by the O. If my name didn’t start with Å, I would love one of my daughters to have the same initial as me ^^ [name]Odessa[/name] is also wonderful
Despoena comes to mind, I love all the vowels and the rounded sound. Also love the D in the middle which would be shared with a potential [name]Endymion[/name]. Also [name]Dido[/name], [name]Doveva[/name] and [name]Damaris[/name].
[name]Artemisia[/name] is beautiful, I really like it for you. [name]Astoria[/name] and [name]Ambrosia[/name] as well, but those have potentially negative associations something [name]Artemisia[/name] doesn’t. [name]Even[/name] the 300 sequel which was going to be called ‘Battle of [name]Artemisia[/name]’ has been changed, which actually made me happy. Other A names I like for you are [name]Amabel[/name] and [name]Amadea[/name]. And hesitantly, Annevieve which I can’t attest to the legitimacy of. I adore the sound of Annevieve though, striking a perfect balance between dignified and lively.
Also [name]Adela[/name], Alastríona, [name]Aletheia[/name], [name]Ali[/name]énor, [name]Anatolia[/name], [name]Angharad[/name], Audovera and [name]Arcadia[/name].
Emerence has been on my mind lately. I was reading a book about names in Norway and Emmerense (the preferred Norwegian form) seems to be more of a localised curiosity than anything, but I do love how it sounds and its meaning, and I was reminded of that. Also [name]Eglantine[/name], [name]Elettra[/name], [name]Eirene[/name], [name]Enid[/name] and [name]Emmanuelle[/name]. Epopee is another one I’d like to mention, or maybe Eponine.
Pieta is another favourite, it’s sweet without being overly so, and both [name]Pia[/name] or [name]Etta[/name] would be awesome nicknames! [name]Phaedra[/name] reminds me of your recently dumped [name]Psyche[/name], I love [name]Phaedra[/name] as well. Or [name]Pascaline[/name] for something a little different.
Zosime seems like something you could replace [name]Xanthe[/name] with, a lot more fun [name]IMO[/name], Zosie would be adorable. Also [name]Zenobia[/name]/[name]Zenovia[/name].
Lilivere, [name]Lumina[/name], Liliola and [name]Leonora[/name] are L favourites of mine, but you have a lot of L names already. I’m also very intrigued by Lysianassa but it’s somewhat over the top. A lot like another almost guilty pleasure Penthesileia. Or Eileithyia which reminds me of Eidothea which has a very cool sound.
[name]Mireia[/name]/Mireio are sweet, and Musidora one of the few -dora names I can actually stand (apart from [name]Pandora[/name]). It would be nice since you’re really into the muses, right?
Roswitha and Rixende strikes me as names you might like, I never get to mention those ^^ Rixende is so intriguing, if I met one I would assume she was fabulous.
[name]Timea[/name], [name]Tacita[/name], [name]Thekla[/name] and Tesla are T names I like, maybe you like them as well, I love that [name]Thekla[/name] works in Norway, I might actually get to use that one! [name]Timea[/name] would be too much like [name]Linnea[/name] for me I’m afraid.
I’m getting to a point where I have to really look for suggestions, and it’s getting close to midnight, so I’m going to leave it at that. I might go through the rest of the alphabet tomorrow
As a last minute suggestion, Ellisiv. Gorgeous Norwegian [name]Elizabeth[/name] variant from 1000 years ago that should really be adored. It peaked in 2004, but the grand total of women called Ellisiv in Norway is 134, and there are 3 or less born every year since it’s not on the 10 year statistics found at ssb.no
[name]Alcyone[/name]/[name]Halcyon[/name]- pretty but I think this would have many pronunciation issues.
[name]Circe[/name]- I like this one, but it sounds a bit harsh and reminds me of a mad queen.
Everild- thought it said Everlid at first, even after re-reading it I’m still not a fan.
[name]Eudora[/name]- love this one. Super sweet sounding. Beautiful.
Ferelith- sounds nice but not the most attractive looking name [name]IMO[/name].
Fiametta- pretty, but slightly fussy sounding. Overall I do like this one.
[name]Idony[/name]/Idunn- think this would have pronunciation issues.
Illyria- makes me think of a drug or disease.
[name]Lilith[/name]- love this one. Very pretty, but perhaps too common ([name]Lily[/name]) for you?
Liriope- not a fan of this one. Prefer [name]Calliope[/name].
Luthien/Lorien- like Lorien
Merioneth- seems fussy/ too much
Mythily- has a pretty lyrical sound. I like it.
Niniane- sounds too vowel heavy
[name]Nephele[/name]- pronunciation issues
[name]Ophelia[/name]- Gorgeous. My favorite on your list. Has such a beautiful sound.
[name]Persephone[/name]/Proserpine- love [name]Persephone[/name].
Polyhymnia- pronunciation and spelling issues.
[name]Vesper[/name]- my second favorite from your list.
Xante- not a fan of this one.
My top favorites:
- [name]Ophelia[/name]
- [name]Vesper[/name]
- [name]Persephone[/name]
4.[name]Eudora[/name] - [name]Lilith[/name]
dearest: haha, I forgot about [name]Tre[/name] Nøtter til Askepott… my favourite christmas movie (but what a horrible girl [name]Dora[/name] is)! I also don’t mind O-names, as long as they’re not too close. My boyfriend calls me by my first name, [name]Agnes[/name], so it won’t be a real problem. Oenone is such a cute name, and a mountain nymph! The nymphs and the muses are my favourites. I also love [name]Ondine[/name]. From your others I love Despoena, [name]Eirene[/name] (she’s in and out of our list all the time), Zosime is gorgeous, Lilivere (how cute!), Lysianassa (I agree with you, a bit over the top!) and Rixende! That’s so cool. I also love Ellisiv (and Hillevi, they remind me of deep dark forests and lakes…). And I think I must put [name]Pandora[/name] back on the list, it’s a beautiful name and I love the myth… I love [name]Elettra[/name] too, and [name]Elektra[/name]. There are too many good names! [name]Thekla[/name] is amazing, that sounds like one of those fairytale ladies with tails… hulder! Very nice name. Thank you so much for all your suggestions, and all your comments!
ellie: Thank you, there are probably some names with pronunciation issues! And thanks for making a top 5!
Ooh I think [name]Halcyon[/name] and [name]Idony[/name] are both new to your list since I last saw it! Especially liking [name]Idony[/name] for you, but [name]Idony[/name] [name]Eurydice[/name] sounds like a parody indie band rather than a beautiful little girl :S
[name]Vesper[/name], [name]Idony[/name], [name]Halcyon[/name], Everild, and Ferelith (plus possibly Luthien- love the sound, but I can’t decide how I feel about Tolkien names) are the ones that I think best achieve what you’ve said you’d like for your daughter
I think that [name]Echo[/name] could easily be a first name, she is adorable!
But based on boys mn’s and short last name it still might be better in the middle? My favorite from each letter:
[name]Alcyone[/name] (I like the vowels at the start and end better than [name]Halcyon[/name], it just seems more complete)
Everild
Fiametta ([name]Adore[/name] it!)
Illyria
Lorien (I wasn’t sure about Luthien, but Lorien is a more direct Tolkein reference that’s easier to pronounce)
Mythily
Niniane
Polyhymnia (omg I forgot about this one! I love it)
[name]Vesper[/name] and [name]Xanthe[/name] are pretty much at an awesome tie for me
[name]Ophelia[/name] and [name]Circe[/name] are ok, but are starting to sound a little too common amongst the other references.
The only one I really don’t like is [name]Idony[/name] (great meaning but sounds too much like iodine to me) =]
A very small, deeply buried part of me is looking at your name list and getting very excited. These are all names that I loved when I was younger. And I guess I still do, they are so beautiful and rich in meaning. Lenore reminds me of a starry night, but that may be because of The Raven. I have a friend called Euphemia and I think it sounds beautiful. Lisandre is a name from a book I loved when I was younger, at a stretch, it means “free a man”. I also have a friend called Miranwe. Rowena?
From your names, I think of Vesper as an onomatopeia for whispering woods. Love Callisto but the rape thing has ruined it (and I really wanted to use Callista). Pandora! Pandora! That little part of me is jumping up and down with glee! I do love that name. And Ishtar. Oh my gosh. This name is beautiful and brings forth a myriad of beautiful images. Such a strong name. I think I’m going to have to add that to my own list. Little self is doing a victory dance. All your names are beautiful.
