Our top 3

Hello again, Nameberry!

We’ve been talking a lot about names recently and I’d love some feedback on our current top 3 choices for a boy.

  1. [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Kit[/name] “[name]Ollie[/name]”
I don’t know what it is, but my husband and I have absolutely fallen in love with the name [name]Oliver[/name]. We know it’s popular, but popularity is really a non-factor for us. [name]Both[/name] of us have popular-for-our-age names and neither one of us were negatively affected by it. [name]Kit[/name] on a boy is a guilty pleasure on mine and I love it paired with [name]Oliver[/name].

  2. [name]Augusten[/name] “[name]Gus[/name]”
We have loved [name]Gus[/name] for quite a while now, but have gone back and forth between [name]August[/name] and [name]Augustus[/name]. Recently, we’ve both started to like [name]Augusten[/name]. It feels decidedly male, unlike [name]August[/name], and less clunky than [name]Augustus[/name]. We’re not sure about a middle name. Our top two middle name choices are [name]Kit[/name] and [name]Quinn[/name]. [name]Augusten[/name] [name]Quinn[/name] doesn’t really work, and we like [name]Kit[/name] with [name]Oliver[/name]. Any suggestions?

  3. [name]Tobias[/name] “[name]Toby[/name]”
This is a name that we had never considered before, but I saw it on a blog the other day, mentioned it to my husband, and now we both really like it. Does it seem to fit with our boys’ names?

Which is your favorite? [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Augusten[/name], or [name]Toby[/name]? Which do you feel goes best with our boys, [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Philip[/name]?

Thanks!

[name]Oliver[/name] strikes me as absolutely perfect for your family. It seems to be your favorite as well.

I really like [name]Augusten[/name] and [name]Tobias[/name] a lot. I don’t think you can go wrong with any of your names.

Did you see [name]Toby[/name] on Cup of [name]Joe[/name]? Her son is SO cute. I saw it there too and it did seem fresher than usual when used on such a sweet city boy.

[name]Toby[/name] is my least favorite. [name]Love[/name] [name]Gus[/name] but my favorite way to get there is [name]Fergus[/name]. I do like [name]Augusten[/name] better than the other two [name]Gus[/name] options. [name]Oliver[/name] is really cute.

I love all of them. [name]Oliver[/name] has been a favourite of mine since I was a little girl (the musical [name]Oliver[/name]! and the book [name]Oliver[/name] Twist, I knew all the words to every song). It’s just gorgeous all around. I, for one, HATE how popular it’s become, but I can understand loving it enough that that doesn’t matter, and if popularity doesn’t bother you, go for it. NN [name]Ollie[/name] is so cute. I had an Aint [name]Ollie[/name] (that was the full name), and I love it and have thought about it for a girly.

I also adore [name]Tobias[/name] and [name]Toby[/name], but they’re such hipster names, I’m afraid. I mean, I love hipster names, don’t get me wrong, but [name]Tobias[/name] is kind of the quintessential hipster name (when I threw my name into a hipster name generator, it returned [name]Tobias[/name], ha.). [name]Tobias[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name] seem vaguely matchy, even though they’re not actualy. So anyway, this is my least favourite of your choices, even though it’s a wonderful name.

[name]Augusten[/name] (although I usually spell it [name]Agustin[/name]), is a long time fave. I mean, I love the gender-neutrality of plain old [name]August[/name] (and also love nn Auggie, in addition to [name]Gus[/name]), but [name]Augusten[/name] is lovely, too. [name]Augustus[/name] feels a bit too much name for my tastes, so I’m with you on going for [name]Augusten[/name] instead. It’s the one I’d choose. It fits well with your other boys, isn’t too popular/trendy, and is an all around excellent name.

I think [name]Oliver[/name] fits beautifully. [name]Toby[/name] is another lovely name, and though not a fan of [name]Gus[/name], I think you’ve found the nicest of its full-name options. Have fun!

I think [name]Oliver[/name] goes best with your other 2 boys - love it! A classic name just like [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Phillip[/name].

My top choice from your 3 is definitely [name]Augusten[/name] (or [name]Augustus[/name] or [name]Augustine[/name]). In my mind [name]Augusten[/name] (or [name]Augustus[/name] or [name]Augustine[/name]) has always matched up perfectly with [name]Theodore[/name] (or [name]Thaddeus[/name]). They just seem to me to have a similar kind of feel about em. I agree that choosing either [name]Augusten[/name] or [name]Augustus[/name] is a good idea, as [name]August[/name] seems to be quite common as a girls name (I’ve known 3). And the NN [name]Gus[/name] matches up absolutely perfectly with your other nicknames. I’d definitely go with [name]Augusten[/name] or [name]Augustus[/name].

[name]Oliver[/name] would be my second choice, as it is also another one of those subtle classics, like [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Philip[/name], that have been around forever, but have never been ridiculously popular. [name]One[/name] concern I’d have with [name]Oliver[/name] though is that it is becoming more and more common, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if given a couple more years it’s a top 10 name in the US (it’s already #1 in [name]England[/name]).

[name]Tobias[/name] I’m not a fan of, never have been. I don’t like the NN [name]Toby[/name] very much either. Part of the reason for my dislike of this name is just personal association, I’ve known several [name]Tobias[/name]’ that were very evangelistic and hypocritical Christians (very judgmental against non-Christians, and not particularly moral/kind in their interactions with non-Christians), so I’m sure that’s swaying my opinion of this name quite a bit. But if I try to look at that name without that association, I still have trouble liking it. Although it does have a nice meaning, which is always important, but all three of your choices have pretty solid meanings.

Anyways, that’s my two cents. [name]Augusten[/name] (or other [name]August[/name] variations)= 10/10 . [name]Oliver[/name] = 7/10 . [name]Tobias[/name] = 3/10

I definitely think [name]Oliver[/name] seems to be your favorite! [name]Oliver[/name] [name]Kit[/name] is one of the best combos I’ve heard in a while!
[name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name], and [name]Ollie[/name]… [name]GOLDEN[/name]!

Thank you all!

@sparrowfinch - yes, it was Cup of [name]Jo[/name]!

[name]Oliver[/name] sounds perfect with his siblings although I was almost swayed by the adorable nn [name]Gus[/name]!

I prefer [name]August[/name] and [name]Augustus[/name] to [name]Augusten[/name] as I think they both work better with the middle name [name]Kit[/name].

We have very similar taste in names! I have [name]Felix[/name] and [name]Theodore[/name] and our frontrunner for boy #3 is [name]Kit[/name]!

[name]Augustin[/name] was my top pick until my husband said no - I so wanted a little [name]Gus[/name] but am just as happy with [name]Kit[/name].

I’m not at all a fan of [name]Toby[/name] though, or [name]Tobin[/name] for that matter and [name]Oliver[/name] is too common for my liking. For some reason the nickname [name]Ollie[/name] annoys me endlessly. It’s irrational, I know.

My pick for you is (by a very long way) [name]Augusten[/name] [name]Kit[/name], even though I prefer the spelling [name]Augustin[/name]

Thanks again!

@ninkynonk - My husband likes the [name]Augustin[/name] spelling as well, but the ending bothers me. To me, it seems like someone left the g off of a present participle, like tryin’.

I like [name]Tobias[/name]/[name]Toby[/name] the best, mostly because [name]Oliver[/name] is super trendy right now in my opinion.
I also have known a few Olivers and did not like them very much. It sounds stuffy to me.
Sorry, just my opinion of course.

[name]Toby[/name] is cute and not very common.
