Out of ideas and need fresh opinions

[name_m]Even[/name_m] though DH and I aren’t expecting, we’re starting to make a list of names. The boy choices were easy for us ([name_u]Andre[/name_u], [name_m]Dante[/name_m], and [name_m]Nathan[/name_m] are our top 3) but we can’t agree on girl names!
As a baby girl of the 90s, I was just one of the many Jessicas growing up so I’m team unique for girl names. I love names like [name_f]Nerida[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], [name_u]Seren[/name_u], and [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]. He, on the other hand, has a very unique name. He likes classics like [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f].
[name_m]Just[/name_m] as some (possibly?) extra helpful info, we’re both avid gamers and like [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] and [name_f]Nova[/name_f] but we’re not sold on either. We also have a pretty strong connection to the dwarves in both World of Warcraft and the Tolkien universe. Also names with water connections usually tip a name in favor for hubby.
Sorry if this is kind of rambling, but I’m all out of names and could really use help!

[name_m]Ah[/name_m], how interesting it is that you have opposite experiences that have provided you with the feelings you have! A middle spot definitely seems best for you! I’ll take a whack at it…maybe some will appeal to either of you.

Aerwyna: I looked up [name_f]Nerida[/name_f] and found it means sea nymph or mermaid (according to Nameberry), so looked up some sea/mermaid inspired names and found this. It’s apparently old English and means friend of the sea. It might be a bit out there, though.

[name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Tessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Emilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Darya[/name_f]: “sea” in Persian, apparently
[name_f]Marisol[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Marina[/name_f]

Video game related (had to look this up, so I don’t know anything about these characters):
Saria
[name_f]Aerith[/name_f]
[name_f]Kairi[/name_f]
[name_u]Cass[/name_u]
[name_f]Vella[/name_f]
Aloy (ha…had to…my husband is playing the game this is from right now)

What about [name_f]Isla[/name_f]? It’s got the water connection, it’s Scottish, which a lot of the WoW Dwarves names remind me of. It’s not super super popular, but also not incredibly rare. Niahm (Neev) may be a good choice, too, with it’s water connections, known-but not overused status and sound that could easily be Dwarven in my book.

What about [name_u]Zola[/name_u] (from [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]) means ‘[name_f]Earth[/name_f]/ ball of earth’. Stronger than [name_f]Lola[/name_f], and [name_u]Zola[/name_u] [name_m]Budd[/name_m] is a good association.

A few with possible water connections…
[name_f]Cyane[/name_f]: a naiad, related to ‘cyan’ - the greenish-blue color.
Ilayda: Turkish name, supposedly that of a water sprite?
[name_f]Melusine[/name_f] or Melusina: a type of water-spirit in European legend. The Starbucks logo is based on a melusine.
[name_f]Nimue[/name_f], Niniane or Nyneve: names of the Lady of the [name_u]Lake[/name_u] in Arthurian romances.
[name_f]Odessa[/name_f] or Ottessa: the city of [name_f]Odessa[/name_f] is known as ‘the pearl of the [name_m]Black[/name_m] Sea’. A similar name is Ottessa, borne by novelist Ottessa Moshfegh (don’t know its origin but find it intriguing).
Thalassia: epithet of [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], derived from Greek thalassios ‘of the sea’. Thalassia (fl. late 2nd century BCE) was a queen of Characene, a small kingdom in what is now southern Iraq. There’s also the simpler [name_f]Thalassa[/name_f], a primeval goddess of the sea.
[name_f]Yara[/name_f]: a water-spirit in Brazilian legend.

ETA: @namergirl3 haha my boyfriend is playing that too! Her name has grown on me :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks everyone! I’ve got a list of great names to bring to hubby now, hopefully he likes them as much as I do

Haha! I’ve heard it so much lately that it’s growing on me a bit, too

I think [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] could be a great fit for you…It means heart of the sea, and is a classic name that is rarely, making it more unusual (like [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]).

Maybe you’d also like…
[name_f]Maris[/name_f] (of the sea)
[name_f]Maren[/name_f] (sea) (reminds me of [name_u]Seren[/name_u])
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Ada[/name_f]

Good luck!

Hahah  I was low key disappointed when I first heard her name, it seemed so random! It’s been a few weeks now and I’ve come to accept it, haha. It’s kind of… serene? I wonder how many girls will be named Aloy this year!

OP, I hope you share your husband’s response. Some more ideas:
[name_u]Adria[/name_u] - as in Adriatic. [name_m]Tom[/name_m] Petty has a daughter named [name_u]Adria[/name_u]. Caspia ([name_m]Caspian[/name_m]) might work too?
Alifair - info here. I think it sounds elfin.
Cypria - another name for [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f], who was born from the sea-foam at [name_m]Cyprus[/name_m], making the island sacred to her. Other epithets of the goddess include [name_f]Idalia[/name_f] (from Idalion, an ancient city in [name_m]Cyprus[/name_m], said to come from Greek idou alion “I see the sun”) and [name_f]Cytherea[/name_f] (from the island Cythera, also sacred to her).
Disa - a heroine in Swedish legend, also a genus of orchids named for her. A medieval short form of Old Norse names containing dís “goddess, priestess, female guardian spirit.” The only name I could find for female dwarfs in LotR was Dís, which might be from Old Norse (I believe Tolkien based some of the languages on Old Norse?).
Galene - one of the Nereids, derived from Greek galênos “calm” (used particularly of the sea) and “gentle.” [name_f]Galena[/name_f] and [name_f]Galina[/name_f] are variations.
[name_f]Giselda[/name_f] - like a cross between [name_f]Giselle[/name_f] and [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], if you wanted to use [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] as a nickname.
Ianassa or Janassa - another Nereid. The first element might be Greek ia “one,” ia “violets” or even [name_f]Io[/name_f]; the second element is anassa “queen.”
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] - an Oceanid.
Jandira - a goddess of the sea worshiped by the Bakairi people of [name_u]Brazil[/name_u] (or so I read?)
Naïs - “water-nymph” in Greek, from naô “to flow.” Used in [name_f]France[/name_f] as a short form of [name_f]Ana[/name_f]ïs.
Nausicaa - a princess in The Odyssey. She falls head over heels in love with [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] after he washes up on her shore after his seven years with [name_u]Calypso[/name_u]. Possibly means “burner of ships” from Greek naus “ship” (source of “nautical”) + kaiô “to light” or “to kindle.” Nafsika is the modern Greek form.
[name_f]Oceana[/name_f] - “oh shee [name_m]AH[/name_m] na.” Océane is used in [name_f]France[/name_f].
[name_f]Ondine[/name_f], [name_f]Undine[/name_f] or [name_f]Undina[/name_f] - a type of water-nymph or sprite in Germanic folklore, derived from Latin unda “wave.”
[name_f]Pelagia[/name_f] - from Greek pelagos “open sea.”
[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] - Latin name for the [name_u]River[/name_u] Severn in [name_m]Britain[/name_m]. [name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] is a water-nymph in [name_m]Milton[/name_m]'s Comus: “[name_f]Sabrina[/name_f] fair, / Listen where thou art sitting / Under the glassy, cool, translucent wave, / In twisted braids of lilies knitting / The loose train of thy amber-dropping hair; / Listen for dear honour’s sake, / [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] of the silver lake, / Listen and save!”
[name_f]Sapphira[/name_f] - related to “sapphire.”
[name_f]Sirena[/name_f] - “mermaid” in Spanish.
[name_f]Yavanna[/name_f] - earth goddess in LotR. There’s also [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f], if you’re into [name_u]Neil[/name_u] Gaiman. [name_f]Varda[/name_f] is pretty too!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m], I recommend these names for a precious baby girl.

[name_f]Gianna[/name_f]: God is gracious/gracious girl
[name_f]Eve[/name_f]: Life
[name_f]Jillian[/name_f]: youthful/young
[name_f]Rochelle[/name_f]: sheep/soft sheep
[name_f]Ruth[/name_f]: friendship/friends
[name_u]Sierra[/name_u]/[name_f]Cierra[/name_f]: black/dark
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]: woman/little
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f]/[name_f]Rose[/name_f]: flower/rose/bloom
[name_u]Shelby[/name_u]: meadow on the ledge
[name_u]Riley[/name_u]: valiant
[name_f]Tamara[/name_f]: palm tree
[name_f]Katie[/name_f]:

For the up and coming [name_f]Nova[/name_f] why not Novia? For the popular [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], why not Zurie?
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Seren[/name_u]! For [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] & [name_f]Sarah[/name_f], why not [name_f]Naomi[/name_f], [name_f]Colleen[/name_f] or [name_f]Trista[/name_f]!

From your signature, I absolutely love [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] [name_f]Marin[/name_f]. Does he like [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] from your list? I think it fits in with his style of classic and familiar.

[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Calla[/name_f]
[name_f]Thalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f] / [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Bianca[/name_f]
[name_f]Solene[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]

Quick update for those wondering: Hubby was surprisingly on board with some of the names! Our top two are [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], but he also liked [name_f]Marisol[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. He’s so-so on [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], so we’ll probably use [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] as a middle since it’s an honor name. [name_f]Maren[/name_f]/[name_f]Marin[/name_f] is also a middle name choice, since it’s similar to his middle name (Marnyn). Thank you everyone for your help! Hopefully soon we’ll need to choose one.
