Outhip the Hipsters!

What names are even more edgy and nerdy-cool than the Hipster List? See what you think of the list below and then come up with your own list! Thank you, Lyndsayjenness, [name]Phaedra[/name], and Unicorngal for adding to and supporting this list.
[name]Rule[/name] #1: The names on the Outhip the Hipsters list cannot be on the Hipsters list or be enthusiastically endorsed on Nameberry. That’s the difficulty about coming up with this kind of list. You’ve got to step out and claim they’re hip but they can’t be hip on Nameberry. Or they have to be really rare. Very edgy!

The first name that came to mind for me was [name]Deveraux[/name]…
I don’t know if it qualifies…but I feel like it does

I think my daughter’s name qualifies, her name is [name]Wilhelmina[/name].

Here are some of the names floating around my head for consideration–oh my gosh, you beat me to [name]Wilhelmina[/name]! I really expect that one to take off, not in terms of great popularity, but greater than it is now and among certain hip parents.

A few additions: [name]Severin[/name], [name]Elva[/name], and [name]Cressida[/name]. I’m being a bit broad with my hipster expectations, perhaps, but there are so many interesting possibilities!

As usual, great list, [name]Susan[/name]!

Thanks, [name]Jill[/name]! Since you are such a classic name lover, I am curious about which of the names you like on the Outhip the Hipsters List.

I love many of these additions! [name]Will[/name] make a new list including many of these names and names from the other posts tomorrow.

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Susan[/name]! I love the overall feel of the lists, and starred my favorites:

I just looked up [name]Blanche[/name], and it is on the Old Lady Cool List. [name]Dorothy[/name] is definitely headed for the list. My concept for the Outhip the Hipsters List is to only have names that are not on hot lists on Nameberry so they’d be super duper edgy. What do you think? I will look up your other ideas and tomorrow I am going to streamline the long list and make multiple lists. One will be vintage - it will be my fave. Oh, I was thinking we could have one list that’s ready for the suburbs. It would have names like [name]Leona[/name] and [name]Clarence[/name]. The other list would only be ready for places like Manhattan. It would have names like [name]Bernard[/name] and [name]Bernice[/name]. I got to say that I am wildly in love with the name [name]Leona[/name]! It is so fabulous that I could drown in it. Kind of vampire but with a forties hat and netting on and little gloves. Ooooh!

[name]Junia[/name] - perfecto
[name]Garrett[/name]
[name]Edward[/name] (nn [name]Ned[/name]) - headed for yupster ( I love, love [name]Edward[/name]! But he’s too cool for the Outhip the Hipsters list)
[name]Shaw[/name]
[name]Gwen[/name] - perfect
[name]Wilhelmina[/name] (nn [name]Mina[/name]) - yeah
[name]Darius[/name] - on the coolator
[name]Mavis[/name]
[name]Ulysses[/name] - yes!
[name]Otto[/name] - yeah
[name]Nico[/name] - way too handsome, already uber cool.

Not sure what list to put this name on: [name]Hawthorn[/name]

[name]How[/name] about [name]Harold[/name] and [name]Wendell[/name] for the boys? Can’t think of any girl names right now, which is bad because I’m having a baby girl on Friday!!!

[name]Beverly[/name]

[name]Melville[/name]

Very cool lists, [name]Susan[/name]! What about [name]Nancy[/name] or [name]Nanette[/name]? (And thank you with a huge hug…)

[name]Jill[/name], one of my favorite things to do all day is read your posts. Your writing is so clean and lovely like vanilla ice cream. Please don’t ever stop posting on Nameberry. I made a poster mad before, and she started laying into me, so I erased the post she was mad about. Then what she said made no sense! It was really funny. She never got mad at me again. I forget what her name was. We need to remember that some of the posters might be really young. They might be as young as twelve! So don’t take it too personally. Plus some people just like to rage. You are so nice that maybe they suppose that you would be a good object for their rage. If you just keep posting, they will probably give up and leave you alone.
Meanwhile, I added [name]Nanette[/name] to the list. [name]Nancy[/name] isn’t quite ready for the edge yet imo.

Thanks, [name]Susan[/name]. I really, really appreciate everything you said, and I want you to know how much I love reading your amazingly creative posts and lists. You’re a very kind, interesting, and witty person, and I’m so glad to “know” you! To say I’m flattered is an understatement, and I just can’t thank you enough! (Congratulations to [name]Nanette[/name], and no hard feelings, [name]Nancy[/name]!)

Edited: To add a few important things…

Thanks, [name]Susan[/name]! I’ve enjoyed your lists here; great subject! I think the hipster thing is broad, personally, but that’s part of the difficulty and appeal of guessing at it. I expect that hipster names will vary regionally and ethnically a bit, and I wonder how long the vintage thing will go on for before hipsters veer off into another direction, or how many name categories will be tapped. Sorry I didn’t think to check the other lists on here, just the specific hipster one. Related: what exactly is the difference between hipster and yupster names? I have the vague assumption that yupsters are a little more well-off, a little more conservative in taste, perhaps a little more suburban and a little older, but many of the names on the hipster list vs. the yupster list overlap, to my ear. I’m going to check these all out again…

I’m really on a [name]Flavia[/name] kick, by the way–fun name! And [name]Lazarus[/name] is a great choice for this hipster concept; I’m kicking myself for not thinking of it.

I’m glad you like the Outhip the Hipsters lists. My daughter thought of [name]Lazarus[/name] nn [name]Lazer[/name]. I have seen a lot of hipsters lately because we have started attending a church full of young hipsters in downtown L.A. We also see them walking around down there, too. We see plenty of poor and homeless people at the church and on the streets, too. Okay, so hipster people tend to have very unusual glasses and eccentric, expensive haircuts. My daughter tells me they are always going to concerts. One of her friend’s brother is a hipster named [name]Oscar[/name]. Hipsters are very thin. In fact, this is really sad - there is a very handsome, very, very gaunt young man at our new church named [name]Alasdair[/name]. Beyond hip. I thought, why is he so thin? He just got finished being treated for leukemia it turns out. He got up in front of everyone and told his story. But most hipsters are just thin because they want to be thin. They are different than yuppies because their hair is often dyed and they have lots of piercings.
I have been meeting a lot of hipsters who live in lofts or in parts of L.A. that are very seedy, but are being revived. One couple has a dinner every Friday night for all the children who live in their neighborhood. I love that!
