Overhauling list - thoughts?

We’re rethinking our top choices and would love your feedback on our long list. And suggestions would be fabulous.

We love classic names. Names that are dignified, timeless, and perhaps a little underused. Names that are a little preppy, too. A good nickname is a plus but not a necessity. Our sons’ names, which we feel fit this image, are [name]Theodore[/name] “[name]Teddy[/name]” and [name]Philip[/name] “[name]Pip[/name]”.

With that in mind, what do you think of…

[name]August[/name] “[name]Gus[/name]”
[name]Augustus[/name] “[name]Gus[/name]”
[name]George[/name] [maybe “[name]Geordie[/name]” some of the time?]
[name]Henry[/name] [sometimes “[name]Harry[/name]”]
[name]James[/name]
[name]John[/name]
[name]Julian[/name] “[name]Jude[/name]”
[name]Louis[/name]
[name]Nathaniel[/name] “[name]Niel[/name]”
[name]Oliver[/name] “[name]Ollie[/name]”
[name]Peter[/name] “[name]Piers[/name]”
[name]Robert[/name] “[name]Bobby[/name]”
[name]Sebastian[/name] “[name]Ash[/name]”
[name]Simon[/name]
[name]Stephen[/name]
[name]William[/name] “[name]Billy[/name]”

So what do you think? Also any other nickname suggestions for the names on our list?

Thanks!

[name]George[/name], [name]Louis[/name], and [name]Oliver[/name] are my favorites from your list. I feel that they best fit the image you want (dignified, timeless, underused) and also go great with [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Philip[/name]. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of these.

[name]August[/name] “[name]Gus[/name]” – I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]August[/name]. It’s very cool but classic. I prefer Auggie as a nn but [name]Gus[/name] is cute too
[name]Augustus[/name] “[name]Gus[/name]” – [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Augustus[/name] too
[name]George[/name] – I think it’s fine, but it’s boring to me
[name]Henry[/name] – I dislike all [name]Henry[/name] nicknames, but [name]Henry[/name] is very soft and handsome
[name]James[/name] – boring to me
[name]John[/name] – same as [name]James[/name]
[name]Julian[/name] “[name]Jude[/name]” – [name]Love[/name] [name]Julian[/name] and I love the historic feeling of it but don’t understand [name]Jude[/name] as a nn. [name]Jules[/name] or [name]Ian[/name] are better
[name]Louis[/name] – [name]Love[/name] it but prefer the spelling [name]Lewis[/name]. I love [name]Lew[/name] as a nickname and it’s so handsome
[name]Nathaniel[/name] “[name]Niel[/name]” – [name]LOVE[/name]. This was on our list for a while. I love [name]Nate[/name] and [name]Thane[/name] as nicknames
[name]Oliver[/name] “[name]Ollie[/name]” – [name]Love[/name] this one too, so spunky and cool and preppy feeling like you want
[name]Peter[/name] “[name]Piers[/name]” – This ones boring too but I really like [name]Piers[/name] as a full name, or [name]Pierce[/name]
[name]Robert[/name] “[name]Bobby[/name]” – boring
[name]Sebastian[/name] “[name]Ash[/name]” – [name]LOVE[/name] this one, which was on our long list, but I’ve never thought of [name]Ash[/name] as a nickname, very cool. I like [name]Bastian[/name]
[name]Simon[/name] – [name]Love[/name] [name]Simon[/name]. Handosme and smart sounding. Sims is a cool nickname
[name]Stephen[/name] – boring
[name]William[/name] “[name]Billy[/name]” – [name]Love[/name] [name]William[/name]. [name]Regal[/name] and handsome and I love [name]Liam[/name] as a nickname

[name]August[/name] “[name]Gus[/name]” - I like it. Not the biggest fan of any nns for this name though.
[name]Augustus[/name] “[name]Gus[/name]” - I like [name]August[/name] better.
[name]George[/name] [maybe “[name]Geordie[/name]” some of the time?] - It’s ok. I don’t really get [name]Geordie[/name] TBH… [name]Georgie[/name] seems to fit better if you want a nn.
[name]Henry[/name] [sometimes “[name]Harry[/name]”] - I really don’t get [name]Harry[/name] as a nn for [name]Henry[/name]. When I think of a nn, it’s a shorter version of the name or maybe a more cutesy version of a short name (like [name]Gracie[/name] for [name]Grace[/name]). I do like [name]Henry[/name] by itself though.
[name]James[/name] - A nice classic, but NMS.
[name]John[/name] - A little too boring [name]IMO[/name].
[name]Julian[/name] “[name]Jude[/name]” - [name]Julian[/name] is ok. [name]Jude[/name] doesn’t make sense as a nn. I’d either just go with [name]Jude[/name] or use it as a nn for [name]Judah[/name].
[name]Louis[/name] - Like!
[name]Nathaniel[/name] “[name]Niel[/name]” - I like it, though I prefer [name]Nate[/name] as a nn.
[name]Oliver[/name] “[name]Ollie[/name]” - Like.
[name]Peter[/name] “[name]Piers[/name]” - [name]Piers[/name] doesn’t make sense. [name]Peter[/name] is ok.
[name]Robert[/name] “[name]Bobby[/name]” - Not bad. [name]Don[/name]'t really like [name]Bobby[/name] for some reason though… kind of like [name]Robbie[/name]/[name]Robby[/name] better.
[name]Sebastian[/name] “[name]Ash[/name]” - [name]Love[/name] [name]Sebastian[/name]. I see where you get [name]Ash[/name] but it’s kind of weird. What about [name]Asher[/name] or [name]Ashton[/name] to get that nn?
[name]Simon[/name] - It’s ok.
[name]Stephen[/name] - Not bad.
[name]William[/name] “[name]Billy[/name]” - NMS.

@southernmaple - Thanks for the feedback! I love the names in your signature!

@dantea - Thank you for responding. I appreciate the feedback even though I think we have rather different taste. I find it interesting which names you described as boring. I personally would think that names like [name]George[/name], [name]Robert[/name], and [name]Stephen[/name] would be less boring than say [name]Nathaniel[/name] or [name]Oliver[/name] because they’re used for fewer boys. Sure, maybe [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name] sound more modern today, but I think that the fact that they seem to be on just about everyone’s list would make them seem less refreshing and even maybe a little bit boring. But thanks again for responding!

@jenniepea382 - Thank you for your feedback. We clearly have very different stances on nicknames. I understand why you don’t see some of the connections, but some of the nicknames I listed are well established. [name]Harry[/name] just is a nickname for [name]Henry[/name]. It’s a fact, just as much as [name]Teddy[/name] is for [name]Theodore[/name] and probably more than [name]Pip[/name] is for [name]Philip[/name]. Likewise [name]Geordie[/name] is an established diminutive of [name]George[/name]. Others, like [name]Jude[/name] for [name]Julian[/name] are more modern (we’d use a D middle name so it would make more sense), and [name]Piers[/name] is a version of [name]Peter[/name] and a way to avoid [name]Pete[/name]. I should have clarified that while we like nicknames, we don’t like nicknames that 10 other kids will have. So while [name]Nate[/name], [name]Robbie[/name], and [name]Will[/name] are great, [name]Niel[/name], [name]Bobby[/name], and [name]Billy[/name] will stand out more today.

Thanks again for all feedback, positive and negative.

You’re absolutely right that we have different tastes  To me, names like [name]Robert[/name] and [name]George[/name] and whatnot are boring because I think I know 50 boys with each of those names from newborn to 40.

Whereas I’ve never met a [name]Nathaniel[/name] or [name]Oliver[/name] and those seem just as classic and underused, not modern because as you can see, I generally prefer older names. So I suppose it’s something about location right?

[name]Ah[/name], location must be it. Because while I know my fair share of [name]Roberts[/name] and [name]Georges[/name] (and [name]Philips[/name]) over the age of 40, I don’t know of a single young one. On the other hand, I know of at least five Nathaniels (and even more Nathans) and at least five Olivers born over the last five years. When I said modern I didn’t mean that they we’re new names (they’re obviously not) but that they sound modern to most ears these days. They sound “fresh”, if you will. But in reality, they’re not - at least around here (Rhode Island). Where are you from?

Also, good luck trying to conceive. It took us a while to conceive [name]Teddy[/name] so I know how frustrating it can be. But don’t loose hope! It’ll happen soon!

Any other thoughts?

[name]August[/name] “[name]Gus[/name]”

[name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name], and [name]Gus[/name]
