Owen v. Oren v. Emmett v. Everett

We can’t seem to settle on a name for our baby. My husband really likes [name_u]Owen[/name_u] (I do, too) but we worry that it is too popular right now. I came across [name_m]Oren[/name_m] today, which has a familiar sound and feel to [name_u]Owen[/name_u], but is less popular. I absolutely love [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], but my husband isn’t as love with it. He prefers [name_u]Everett[/name_u], but I think it is difficult to say with our last name. I would really appreciate any advice on these names or any alternatives that feel similar.

My favorites are [name_m]Oren[/name_m] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]. I think [name_m]Oren[/name_m] ages better than [name_u]Owen[/name_u], and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] is less trendy than [name_u]Everett[/name_u] (and much more handsome).

Other names with a similar feel:
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Ethan[/name_m]
[name_m]Gavin[/name_m]
[name_m]Caleb[/name_m]
[name_u]Drew[/name_u]
[name_u]Rhys[/name_u]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m]
[name_m]Louis[/name_m]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u]
[name_m]Cole[/name_m]
[name_m]Colin[/name_m]
[name_u]Dean[/name_u]
[name_m]Callum[/name_m]
[name_m]Graham[/name_m]

[name_m]Ewan[/name_m]
[name_u]Micah[/name_u]
[name_m]Otto[/name_m]
[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]

Thoughts on these? I hope you can find something you love!

Thanks for the ideas, katiem333.

[name_u]Rhys[/name_u], [name_m]Ian[/name_m], [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_m]Graham[/name_m], [name_m]Grant[/name_m], and [name_u]Reid[/name_u] have also made our long list. We really like [name_u]Rhys[/name_u], but I worry that no one will know how to spell it (hubby isn’t a fan of spelling it [name_u]Reece[/name_u]). [name_m]Callum[/name_m] is one of my favorites, but hubby is less of a fan (it reminds him of [name_m]Lord[/name_m] of the Rings / Gollum). We both like [name_m]Grant[/name_m], but it doesn’t make either of us that excited.

What do you think about [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] and Lowen as [name_u]Owen[/name_u] alternatives? I still like Oren better, but my husband really likes Lowen.

I prefer less popular/trendy names as well, but between the two choices I prefer [name_u]Everett[/name_u] and [name_u]Owen[/name_u] over [name_m]Oren[/name_m] & [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]. I like [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] & [name_m]Ian[/name_m] for names similar to [name_u]Owen[/name_u]. And also [name_m]Gavin[/name_m], which is in top 100 but not as popular as [name_u]Owen[/name_u]. I prefer [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] and [name_m]Beckett[/name_m] (double t names like [name_u]Everett[/name_u]) over [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]. I think in the end, go with the name you like best if you can’t find a less popular alternative that you like at least almost as much!

Your four choices I would call popular vs trendy; they’re all older names so I wouldn’t worry if a name is too trendy and will immediately date your son.

I love your shortlist but prefer [name_m]Oren[/name_m] and [name_u]Everett[/name_u] above [name_u]Owen[/name_u] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u]; they strike me as less common.

An alternative that comes to mind is [name_m]Ronan[/name_m].

I see your point with [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]. What about the [name_u]Reese[/name_u] spelling? I do like [name_u]Rowan[/name_u], not so much Lowen; that’s partly because I see the word “low” in it.
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about [name_m]Cohen[/name_m]? Alternative spelling being [name_m]Coen[/name_m]. Pronounced like [name_u]Owen[/name_u] with a C in front of it.
There’s also [name_m]Bowen[/name_m] which, funny enough, means “son of [name_u]Owen[/name_u]”. Can’t get much more similar than that! [name_m]Bowie[/name_m] would be a cute nickname.
Thoughts on those two?

Thanks, jojo. I agree that they are all relatively popular right now (minus [name_m]Oren[/name_m], which doesn’t even make the top 1000), rather than trendy. [name_u]Owen[/name_u] is definitely the most popular of our short list choices (I usually see it ranked at somewhere around 19-35); whereas [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_u]Everett[/name_u] hover around 100-120. We want something familiar, but not overused (it would be nice if is wasn’t one of five boys with the same name in his class) and easy to spell.

I like [name_m]Cohen[/name_m] but not [name_m]Bowen[/name_m]. There’s just something about [name_m]Bowen[/name_m] that rubs me wrong.

My favourite would be [name_u]Owen[/name_u]. Before I watched Good [name_m]Luck[/name_m] [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] probably would have topped it, but not now. [name_u]Everett[/name_u] would come next, and [name_m]Oren[/name_m] after that. A long way after that.

I love [name_m]Oren[/name_m]! Sorry your husband doesn’t. There are a couple of different spellings. Would he like [name_m]Oran[/name_m] or [name_m]Orrin[/name_m] better? I’m not big on Lowen. What about [name_m]Lowell[/name_m]?

Some others I think you might like…

[name_m]Garrett[/name_m] - similar to [name_m]Grant[/name_m] but has the -tt ending sound
[name_u]Everest[/name_u] - might be a little out there but it has a great sound
[name_m]Forrest[/name_m] - same as above
[name_m]Soren[/name_m] - similar in sound to [name_m]Oren[/name_m] & Lowen

Good luck!

[name_u]Owen[/name_u] [name_u]Everett[/name_u]. Or explore more names.

[name_u]August[/name_u]
[name_u]Elliot[/name_u]
[name_m]Odin[/name_m]
[name_m]Ramsey[/name_m]
[name_u]Tobin[/name_u]

I would call [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]… [name_u]Rice[/name_u].
[name_m]Oren[/name_m] ([name_m]Oran[/name_m]) is used as a mn in my ancestry, not sure I’d use it as a first.
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] will be called Emms or [name_f]Emmie[/name_f], not what I’d want for a son.

[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] is my favorite.

I prefer [name_m]Oren[/name_m] over Own, and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] over [name_u]Everett[/name_u]. I really love the uniqueness of [name_m]Oren[/name_m].

[name_m]Oren[/name_m] is my favorite. You seem to want to avoid popular and trendy, and [name_m]Oren[/name_m] is your best bet there.

I have an [name_u]Owen[/name_u] and [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_u]Everett[/name_u] have always been top contenders for a brother. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Oren[/name_m] too, especially being a nature name. Go back and forth between [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] and [name_u]Everett[/name_u], but I know of several babies named [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], so I do not have the sense that [name_u]Everett[/name_u] is trendier. If popularity is a concern, I would go for [name_m]Oren[/name_m] out of all of them. 100%.

Some more ideas, sorry for repeats… [name_m]Rhett[/name_m], [name_m]Emrys[/name_m], [name_m]Ewan[/name_m], [name_m]Thorin[/name_m], [name_u]Tobin[/name_u], [name_m]Bennett[/name_m], [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m], [name_u]Calder[/name_u], [name_u]Ellis[/name_u], [name_m]Gannon[/name_m], [name_u]Kieran[/name_u], [name_u]Rohan[/name_u], [name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]…

These all seem like good names, but I fear [name_u]Owen[/name_u] has become awfully popular. I have wanted a son named [name_u]Owen[/name_u] since I read [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables as a girl and we named our unborn son that and then years later it exploded in popularity. Still, it is a gorgeous name and a classic, so go for it if you love it.

[name_m]Oren[/name_m] reminds me of a nefarious politician and a creepy uncle in one of my favorite children’s series, The Melendy Children, by the incomparable [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] Enright. While those are personal connections, the name has something of a hayseed flavor to it. I sure love [name_m]Ethan[/name_m] (awfully common) and [name_m]Eben[/name_m] better.

[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] is fine, though again it has something of that rural quality in it that I’m not keen on. I like [name_u]Everett[/name_u], [name_u]Everest[/name_u], [name_u]Elisha[/name_u], [name_u]Evan[/name_u], Evanston, [name_u]Ellery[/name_u], [name_u]Ellington[/name_u], [name_m]Edison[/name_m], [name_m]Ernest[/name_m], [name_m]Omar[/name_m], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], and [name_u]Orrie[/name_u].

Good luck!
