Padraig?

My husbands middle name is [name]Padraig[/name], and im thinking of how it would work as a first name for our son coming in september.

i saw here on nameberry that its traditionally pronounced Pad-dreek. however my husband and his family have always pronounced it “pad-rig” which i highly prefer, and would probably use the nickname “rigs” since im not a huge fan of the name per say, although i dont hate it. but i do HATE the nickname paddy!

how hard do you think it would be for my son growing up with a name like this? am i wrong to pronounce it as Pad-[name]Rig[/name]? I am pretty sure the pro golfer [name]Padraig[/name] [name]Harrington[/name] pronounces it as “pad-rig” I just dont like the fact that he will forever be correcting people, “no its not [name]Patrick[/name], its [name]PADRAIG[/name]!” and that could get highly annoying!!

But i love the nickname [name]Rigs[/name], and think it goes well with my son [name]Max[/name]. I just would want a longer name for his birth certificate!

thoughts?

I’m a fluent speaker of the language and the pronunciation of [name]Padraig[/name] varies in different regions due to different dialects. The most generally accepted pronunciations are PAD-rig and PAWD-rig, though. Never in all my days have I heard Pad-reek!
I think its quite handsome, I like it.

If I’m right I do believe it’s actually pronounced as Paw-rig, or Paw-drig more so than the pronunciations you have listed. I’m not 100% but that’s what I’ve been told.

Whenever, I’ve heard the golfer’s name I’ve something more like Pod-rig, so no ‘a’ sound in there at all.

I think Pod-rig or Pawdrig pronunciations would still give you the [name]Rigs[/name] nickname.

Have you considered [name]Rigby[/name] instead?

great, thanks! like i mentioned in my post, my husband always pronounced it “pad-rig” but i read on nameberry it was pronounced “Pad-reek” so i was a little thrown off! Thanks for your expertise!

Thank you! yes, i have thought of [name]Rigby[/name] as well. THought it would be nice to use a family name first, but i do like [name]Rigby[/name]! thanks!

Great if you live in [name]Ireland[/name], but I think that unless you like correcting pronunciation in others and don’t mind your child also having to, this name isn’t that wearable in the US.

I agree to this, I first saw it and thought it was pronounced Pad-rag

yes, i already stated this as a concern in my original post

Another NN that often comes from [name]Padraig[/name] here is [name]Ireland[/name] is Podge. The Pad-reek pronunciation could be coming from the variant [name]Padraic[/name]. I would personally pronounce it Paw’d-rig. [name]Rigs[/name]/[name]Rigby[/name] is cute too!

I knew a little boy named [name]Padraig[/name] in the US and while a lot of people attempted to pronounce his name correctly, many people seemed to just call him [name]Patrick[/name] (I’m not sure if they could hear/appreciate the difference). If that’s not too troublesome for you, I’d use it and I think nn [name]Rigs[/name] is cute too.

I think that when your name is mispronounced you get more attention. ([name]ROLL[/name] CALL AT SCHOOL) “[name]Patrick[/name]?” “No, it’s Pad-rig.” See? all the students in class now have noticed him. “[name]Patrick[/name]?” “Here” does not get as much attention. Go with it. Different is cool.

“podge” haha we call my son “pudge” alot. he was such a pudgy baby! it would be funny to have a pudge and a podge!

I agree that different is cool! thanks!

The only person I ever knew named [name]Padraig[/name] pronounced it Poth-rig. I think [name]Rigs[/name] is cute.
