PANIC mode: Is Evander too try hard?

Ok, so I’ve gone into [name_m]MAJOR[/name_m] panic mode about not having a name for DS due in only a few weeks.

We had our daughter’s name, [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], chosen before she was born and we loved it from the start. I love how it suits an old lady as well as a happy and spirited little girl. And I also like how you don’t hear it too often. Well, at least not in my area!

Although im loving the name [name_m]Evander[/name_m], it kind of worries me that it might come across as trying too hard to be different? I really love old fashioned names that are still quite rare, but also the ones that are ‘old man’ and ‘old lady’ names. It concerns me that I’m yet to hear of an old man named [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. [name_m]Will[/name_m] people just assume that we’ve made this name up? Is it too out there?

I’m not one who is able to wait until the baby is born to see what name they ‘look like’. I admire those who are able to do that. But for me, I really need to be happy with the name before the baby arrives.

Thank you if you’ve read all this. Your help right now means more than you could imagine x

I don’t think it is. I personally think it sounds wonderful. But if it is making you panic it may not be the name. What about [name_u]Evan[/name_u] or [name_m]Ian[/name_m]?

I wouldn’t worry. [name_m]Evander[/name_m] doesn’t seem at all made up or out there in the slightest to me, though I have never met one. It sounds knightly! Great choice, imo.

I really quite like it, especially with sister [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]! And you can always use nicknames like [name_u]Evan[/name_u] or [name_u]Andy[/name_u] when he’s little or in certain circumstances. They’re more familiar and cutesy.

I wouldn’t think many would think you made it up. It’s not a common name but I think most people have heard if it.
Some people will find it “try hard”. This is something I’ve worried about when naming kids too. But really, if you love the name I think you should ignore that concern. Because everyone draws the line for trying too hard somewhere different. I bet some people find [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] too try hard. And on the opposite hand, some people probably find it boring… but who cares. No name will please everyone. So you need to stick with what you love.
Fwiw I also love [name_m]Evander[/name_m].

If you really love the name then you should definitely go for it and try not to worry so much about other people’s reactions. I know that’s easier said than done, but the reality is that everyone has different naming tastes. So, ANY name you choose is bound to be disliked by others. TBH, it sounds like you have quite a few reservations about [name_m]Evander[/name_m] so maybe it’s not ‘the’ name you’re searching for?

I love [name_m]Evander[/name_m], but I can see where you’re coming from. Other non name nerds might think it’s one of those new smoosh names. I guess you need to decide about whether that’s going to really bother you? Or do you love the name too much to care about other people’s opinions?

[name_m]Evander[/name_m] has easy sounds you’ll find in other names, its not elaborate or unpronounceable, so at face value, even if people aren’t familiar with it (and they might be through [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield) it doesn’t seem pretentious and they won’t find it hard. I think it’s a wonderful name with so many nickname options, please don’t doubt it

I have heard of the name through [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield, the boxer. My only problem with it is pronunciation.

I’m glad you brought this up. I swing between ‘Ee-vander’ and ‘Eh-vander’ when pronouncing this name and I’m not sure which is correct, to be honest.

I wonder if others would also struggle with pronunciation?

Thanks

You don’t know how relieved I am to hear that you don’t find it pretentious. This has been one of my main concerns.

Doesn’t sound made up at all! [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is a king in the Aeneid  so it’s got history going way way back

Thanks for bringing this to my attention  I’d never heard of the Latin poem, The Aeneid. And, given that it was written way back between 29 and 19 BC it proves the name’s long history. Yay!!

On the other hand though, it concerns me a little that Evander was a fictional King. I really wish there were more real life namesakes :frowning:

I love [name_m]Evander[/name_m]! Super handsome. And it has a really fresh, vibrant feel to it imo. I would probably use the nickname [name_u]Van[/name_u]

[name_m]Lysander[/name_m]
[name_m]Eamon[/name_m]

Thank you for your support of [name_m]Evander[/name_m]

I’m also loving your suggestions. I’m particularly fond of [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] but sadly can’t get DH to agree. I think [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] and [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] would have been perfect together. Very regal!

[name_m]Leander[/name_m] is one of my GPs. But I’ve got an Aunt named [name_f]Leanne[/name_f] so for me it’s too similar sounding to her name.

[name_m]Lysander[/name_m] - another love & GP but I worry that too many people would question the pronunciation & would struggle with it.

So I think that in some ways [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is a good ‘middle ground’ name from my GPs if that makes any sense?

I think [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is a fine name…to me it doesn’t sound made-up at all.

Not at all! It’s gorgeous, which is why we will be using it for our little one, due this fall! [name_f]May[/name_f] I ask what you’re considering as a middle? We want to honor my father, [name_m]Charles[/name_m], and while I love him, I dislike his name (and it’s variants), and we’re at a loss.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there  Congratulations on your little [name_m]Evander[/name_m]! That’s super exciting news

It’s very reassuring there there’ll be another little [name_m]Evander[/name_m] born later this year. Great choice with the name, BTW

We plan to use DH’s middle name for DS, which is [name_m]Paul[/name_m]. Not very exciting I know, but I do like to keep names in the family.

FWIW I think [name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] is very distinguished & charming. I really like the two names together. Are you not a fan of [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] instead?

I think it’s totally usable. If you’re not sold on it, there’s [name_m]Leonidas[/name_m].

[LEFT][name_m]Per[/name_m] behindthename.com: “In [name_m]Roman[/name_m] [/LEFT]mythology[LEFT] [name_m]Evander[/name_m] was an Arcadian hero of the Trojan War who founded the city of Pallantium near the spot where [name_m]Rome[/name_m] was later built.”

[name_m]Evander[/name_m] is also a Scottish name. Its Greek meaning is “good man.” Its Scottish meaning is “bow, yew warrior.”

You’re so lovely to have looked all this up for me

I do feel slightly embarrassed to admit that I hadn’t even checked out Wikipedia to learn about [name_m]Evander[/name_m]'s namesakes, so thank you for doing this!

  • I’m very pleased to see that there’s a philosopher and sculptor amongst these notable Evanders
