I’ve been kinda crushing on the name [name]Pasha[/name] recently. I think it would be a great nod to my mum and her family since they are Russian. The only problem is that we don’t live in [name]Russia[/name], we live in [name]Wales[/name]. Plus my kids are a mixture of Russian, Greek, French and Welsh. [name]Do[/name] you think it would be weird to name my child [name]Pasha[/name] if he was only a tiny bit Russian? Maybe we should use it as a middle name instead?
[name]Pasha[/name] comes from the Orthodox word for [name]Easter[/name], [name]Pascha[/name]. It’s a diminutive and a childhood nickname like mani in [name]Russia[/name]-- [name]Masha[/name], [name]Misha[/name], [name]Sasha[/name], etc. They’re not given as full formal names and they’re not accepted as baptismal names in the Russian Church.
It’s also a word for a Persian ruler, and sounds kind of like pashmina.
If you like the roots, what about [name]Pascal[/name]? It would fit well with your other children.
I like [name]Pavel[/name] or [name]Pascal[/name] nicknamed [name]Pasha[/name] : ) Cute. Doesn’t matter where you’re from in my opinion, if you like a name from another culture go for it.
I’m going to echo blade here and say that it is a nickname rather than an actual full name, my boyfriend is Russian and it is similar to his family’s pet name for him, Illyusha. [name]Pasha[/name] is a cute sounding nick name, but on a boy who is not Russian, I think it would be a bit strange and cutesy/girly sounding to non-Russians. I would choose a full Russian name for a middle name if you wanted to honour your mother and her heritage.
There was a Russian man on So You Think You Can Dance named [name]Pasha[/name] and he wore it well! I think if you want to use it and since you do have Russian heritage, it would be okay.
In case you’re interested in knowing, [name]Pasha[/name] is also a Greek name (and not a nickname) that means “passover” so it kind of goes with both 2 of the heritages.
I think it goes fine with your other childrens names (if a tad more ethnic) but if you want to use it as a nickname:
[name]Just[/name] a minor correction to Dantea: the word is [name]Pascha[/name], and it’s been borrowed from Greek into Russian when the Slavs were Christianized by Orthodox missionaries. [name]Pasha[/name] is a little-boy nickname, like [name]Billy[/name] or [name]Jimmy[/name].
I automatically think of the nightclub franchise Pacha, which I do believe is pronounced the same way. [name]One[/name] of the biggest named nightclubs across the world, I don’t think I’d want my son sharing that name but that’s just me.
@[name]Blade[/name] – [name]Pascha[/name] is a Latinate and Greek translation of a Hebrew word. [name]Pasha[/name], when looked at from a Greek and not Russian stand point, is an Anglicized spelling. [name]Pasha[/name] is a little boy nickname in Russian, not Greek.
I do understand that [name]Pasha[/name] itself is not a Greek name (as i speak Greek and am a full half Greek), but I was simply saying that [name]Pasha[/name] also is a Greek name (when written in an Anglicized form) and in Greek, it isn’t a nickname. I understand it’s a nickname in Russian but in Greece, it’s not.

I don’t mean for this to sound negative, but [name]Pasha[/name] would not work at all here in Australia for a few reasons; firstly “pash” is Aussie slang for passionate/french kissing and secondly, the [name]Pasha[/name] Bulker was the ship that washed up on a beach in Newcastle during massive storms in 2007! So I can’t get those two things out of my mind when I see [name]Pasha[/name]…
