My husband and I have had a difficult time agreeing on a boy name since we found out the sex. His tastes sort of wander, but I tend to prefer classic names with a [name_m]French[/name_m] influence. We’ve sort of narrowed it down to [name_u]August[/name_u] (a family name and my top pick) and [name_u]Holland[/name_u] (a name that has literary/musical ties and his top pick). Other names we’ve considered are [name_u]Elliot[/name_u], [name_m]Miles[/name_m], [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastien[/name_m], and [name_m]Jasper[/name_m].
A part of me feels like [name_u]Holland[/name_u] is too unusual, but another part of me rather fancies it! I think it sounds distinguished while being quite original. And I think the nickname [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] is lovely.
His siblings name is [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f].
Any thoughts on these names? Constructive criticism completely welcome!
I have never considered holland but I kind of like it! I like [name_u]August[/name_u] too but right now it just feels too trendy. Would you both consider [name_u]Hollis[/name_u]?
I feel like you can’t really go wrong with any of those options
I love how well [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] (beautiful by the way!) and [name_u]August[/name_u] [name_m]Sebastien[/name_m] go together, so immediately I’m drawn to [name_u]August[/name_u]. [name_u]August[/name_u] is gorgeous - I wish my family names were as stylish!
I’m not falling in love with [name_u]Holland[/name_u] for some reason and I can’t really work out why. I think it seems too unusual when paired with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] maybe? In regards to the nickname [name_u]Ollie[/name_u], I think I’d be worried that people would call him [name_f]Hollie[/name_f]. It’s just personal opinion that I don’t love that nickname.
[name_u]Hollis[/name_u] would be a fair compromise. I’ll have to sit with that and see what the husband thinks!
I have the same fear with [name_u]August[/name_u]. Although it’s fairly uncommon now, here have been a few movies and celebrities who’ve used the name recently and I could see it experiencing a major jump in popularity.
I love the pairing of [name_u]August[/name_u] with [name_m]Sebastien[/name_m]! Thank you for that suggestion! We have a few middle names in mind but I think I prefer this combination to those.
I can absolutely see where you are coming from with [name_u]Holland[/name_u]. That’s why I go so back and forth. Additionally it’s a place name which I generally avoid, but for some reason I’ve been able to overlook it with this name. My husband adores it so I haven’t given up on it completely.
We’ve been continually staring at our list for the past few months…it’s nice to get some fresh eyes and opinions on the matter
I don’t like [name_u]August[/name_u] at all, especially with the nn gus. [name_u]Gus[/name_u] is ugly to me.
[name_u]Holland[/name_u] is beautiful though, and I llike the name [name_u]Holland[/name_u] with the nn [name_f]Holly[/name_f], [name_u]Ollie[/name_u] seems weird since is [name_u]Holland[/name_u] and not [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], but it’s your choice overall.
I like [name_u]August[/name_u] much better than [name_u]Holland[/name_u], and I think the nickname [name_u]Gus[/name_u] is adorable, as is [name_m]Augie[/name_m]!
[name_u]Holland[/name_u] would be a dream!! I love this name for a boy. I also really like [name_u]August[/name_u]. Either one would work great in my opinion but my vote goes to [name_u]Holland[/name_u] (:
I prefer [name_u]August[/name_u] and love it with [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], but I don’t have strong feelings either way. Both choices are lovely and sound great with [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].
I don’t want to be negative but I really do not like [name_u]Holland[/name_u] at all as a given name. I don’t find the sound itself appealing and to me it seems like it’s just trying too hard to be unique. [name_u]August[/name_u] is a wonderful name and I actually like all the other names on your list, but not [name_u]Holland[/name_u]. I think it’s really important to like a name enough that you will still like it even if it becomes very popular because you just never know when something might become popular. If you would regret something because it became popular it’s a good sign that you may find the Idea of originality more appealing than the name itself.
Thank you so much for your honest feedback. It’s much appreciated!
I feel like at this point we’re sort of in limbo waiting until we see our little bub - and as a planner, it’s driving me a bit batty. It’s wonderful to get a sense of how the names will be received.
Bit late here, I like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_u]Holland[/name_u] or even [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] [name_u]Holland[/name_u]. I see [name_u]Holland[/name_u] as more a girls’ name (because I know a few) so for a first, I would say [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], [name_m]Harris[/name_m] or [name_u]Hollis[/name_u].
That’s what I had to do with my second son. We went to the hospital with 3 names we would be ok with and when we saw him we immediately knew which one fit. I hope it goes that way for you! Congratulations! Please let us know what you decide to name him
