Penelope nn Ella?

I love the name [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but I know that it’s a lot of name and will get shortened quite often. I don’t like any of the usual nicknames ([name_u]Penny[/name_u], [name_f]Nellie[/name_f], etc.) and was wondering if [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is too much of a stretch? What do you guys think?

It is a bit of stretch. If you love the name [name_f]Ella[/name_f], name your daughter [name_f]Ella[/name_f]! It is full enough and beautiful enough to be a fn. Or if [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] has a certain significance to you, [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] with a middle name ending in “[name_f]Ella[/name_f]” makes more sense, like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] [name_f]Ariella[/name_f]. I love both [name_f]Ella[/name_f] and [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and wish you luck!

Ditto Sigma. Maybe [name_f]Pella[/name_f] or [name_u]Poe[/name_u] could work?

Not a stretch at all in my opinion, but then again, I am one that thinks a nickname needn’t be directly linked to the full name…nicknames are supposed to be fun and informal!

When I say [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], the ‘elo’ pretty much sounds like [name_f]Ella[/name_f] anyway, so it makes complete sense to me to use [name_f]Ella[/name_f] as nickname to [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. I would also like [name_f]Nella[/name_f].

Hm, I think it’s a little of a stretch, do you prefer [name_f]Ella[/name_f] as a first instead perhaps?

This exactly.

I think [name_f]Ella[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] could work.

I don’t think it’s a stretch at all! The sound is right there, in the middle of it. pehn-[name_f]ELLA[/name_f]-pee. Some might say peh-[name_f]NELL[/name_f]-oh-pee, but still, the [name_f]Ella[/name_f] sound is essentially all there. Since [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is on the rise, and [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is already really popular, I’d opt for a less used nn (like [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] or [name_f]Lola[/name_f]!), but I think [name_f]Ella[/name_f] is darling, and I’ve considered it for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] myself.

I don’t think it’s a stretch at all because of the ‘elope’ (ello-p) pronunciation said which could easily change to [name_f]Ella[/name_f]. I do like just [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] by itself with no nickname though, or just P.

I don’t think it’s a stretch at all, but I do much prefer [name_f]Nella[/name_f] as [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]'s nn.

@sunniva - Thanks! That’s what I was thinking, I pronounce it like Pehn-[name_f]Ella[/name_f]-Pee as well. I also like [name_f]Nella[/name_f], but think [name_f]Ella[/name_f] would work better as she gets older. [name_f]Nella[/name_f] seems cutesy and childish to me, which would be great while she is little.
