Penelope or Persephone

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all

We are very excited to be expecting a little girl - - a sister for [name_m]Edward[/name_m] ([name_u]Teddy[/name_u]).
We are having a bit of trouble with names though.

We like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] but hubby doesn’t like nickname [name_u]Penny[/name_u]. We love nicknames so finding the right one is important to us. I’ve suggested [name_f]Posey[/name_f] or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] instead but I’m not sure if it’s a bit of a stretch.

And then there’s [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] - we both love it but is it too unusual? We are in the U.K. And it’s very much an upper class name. Worried she will be teased at school. Also what nickname apart from [name_u]Percy[/name_u]?

Anyway - what do you all think. Appreciate any thoughts and nickname suggestions.

Thank you:)

It’s funny you say you’re from the UK, I always say [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] in my head with a British accent. That sounds super weird, but my husband (from [name_f]England[/name_f]) said it once and I loved it! [name_f]Effie[/name_f] would be a cute nn, same with [name_f]Poppy[/name_f].

I think [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] works perfectly fine as a nickname for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], but these would also work:

[name_f]Nelle[/name_f]/[name_f]Nella[/name_f]/[name_f]Nellie[/name_f]
Lo/[name_f]Lola[/name_f]
[name_m]Pip[/name_m]/[name_f]Pippy[/name_f]
“P” or [name_f]Pia[/name_f]

I do prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] over [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], just because it’s a bit more… accessible, I guess. Both are lovely choices though.

Possibilities for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] nicknames:

Pho/Phi/[name_f]Fia[/name_f]
[name_m]Pip[/name_m]/[name_f]Pippy[/name_f]
“P” or [name_f]Pia[/name_f]
[name_f]Sera[/name_f]/Seri
[name_f]Poppy[/name_f]
[name_f]Posey[/name_f] (I think this one works better for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] than [name_f]Penelope[/name_f])

What about [name_f]Nell[/name_f] or [name_f]Nellie[/name_f] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]? I think [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] could work too.

[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is a little out there, but I’m in the US so not sure how it sounds where you are.

Other ideas …
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] nn [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Paloma[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]
[name_f]Portia[/name_f]
[name_f]Petra[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f] nn [name_u]Georgie[/name_u]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] nn [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f] nn [name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Calliope[/name_f] nn [name_f]Callie[/name_f]
[name_f]Delia[/name_f]

I like [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] better, I don’t think it’s ‘too much’. I like ziggy2112’s suggestion of [name_f]Effie[/name_f], but you could also go with Seph (like how [name_u]Steph[/name_u] is short for [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f]?)?

I love [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]!! I’d go with that personally, but if it’s too much for you then [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]'s fine too.

I’m not too big on nicknames but for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] I like [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] the most, and for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] I like [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Posey[/name_f], [name_f]Effie[/name_f]/[name_f]Effy[/name_f], or Sephie/Seph.

[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is awesome!

As someone already suggested, what about [name_f]Nell[/name_f] or [name_f]Nellie[/name_f] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]?

I like [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], but it is certainly a rare choice.

You can’t go wrong with either name imo. [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] works great as a nn for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], and [name_f]Posey[/name_f] could work for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] if you aren’t keen on [name_u]Percy[/name_u].

If you and your husband both live [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], then I would go for it!

Thanks all so much for those ideas! I love Sephie for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and nice to hear the positive response to that name too. I’ve liked [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] for years but it seems very popular right now which is putting me off a little. Thanks again everyone!

Sorry just a little late-but wanted to endorse [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] too. [name_f]Posey[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], Sephie can all bring it to sound cute and accessible during those school years. I am about to redo my signature and [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] was going on.

I would choose [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] over [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] - [name_f]Posey[/name_f] or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] are perfect nn for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f].

I really like Seph for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. I feel like that’s a really natural nickname for it. I prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] but with the nickname Seph I think I prefer [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] actually. For [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], [name_u]Nelly[/name_u], [name_f]Lolo[/name_f], [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], [name_m]Nelo[/name_m], [name_u]Pen[/name_u], [name_f]Nel[/name_f]

Honestly think [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] and [name_m]Edward[/name_m] go well.

They have the same upper class feel. I’m in the UK too and while I would be taken aback to actually hear a [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], I do love the name, but I am far from upper class so would feel silly using it.

For nicknames, I like [name_f]Effie[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] and [name_f]Posey[/name_f] for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. The only nickname I like for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is [name_f]Nell[/name_f].

I definitely prefer [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. I know a handful of [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]'s so I can tell you it won’t sound unheard of, but they have been called [name_m]Per[/name_m]-suh-phone quite a few times. Plus the association with the mythology is really cool.

I don’t mind [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]. It does remind me of the movie about the girl with a pig nose though…

I prefer [name_f]Penelope[/name_f].

What about [name_u]Poe[/name_u]/[name_u]Po[/name_u] for either name? [name_f]Elle[/name_f] for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] and [name_f]Nia[/name_f] for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f]?

I prefer [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], but [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is also beautiful.

Nicknames:
[name_f]Penelope[/name_f]: [name_f]Nell[/name_f] and [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] are my favorites.
[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]: Seph and [name_f]Posey[/name_f] are my favorites.

Would be good siblings: [name_f]Nell[/name_f] & Seph or [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] & [name_f]Posey[/name_f]
Good luck!!!

[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]'s actually one of my favourite names, whilst [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]'s one of my least. I personally just can’t like [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], and actually think it sounds quite stuck up (sorry if that’s harsh) and equally ‘upper class’ as [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], although I don’t think teasing would be a problem with either. [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is such a beautiful name with a gorgeous sound, and wonderfully magical, slightly mysterious imagery. I love it! In terms of nicknames, I don’t think [name_f]Poppy[/name_f] or [name_f]Posey[/name_f] are stretch for [name_f]Penelope[/name_f], and if they are, they can just be pet names that don’t necessarily stem from the name. And I also agree that [name_f]Effie[/name_f] and Sephy are really cute nicknames for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f].
