[name]Little[/name] Rant - is it just me, or does it seem like a there are a lot of new people on Nameberry posting threads along this line:
“I’m going to name my daughter Ohliveuh [name]Kate[/name] or Ohliveuh [name]Lynn[/name]. Which middle name do you like better? No comments on the spelling of the first name. It is set in stone. I wanted something unique, and I think it also clears up any pronunciation issues. I don’t want people pronouncing it Uh-livia.”
Then, of course, people have to comment on the spelling, because it’s atrocious, and the original poster gets mad.
So do these people just not get that they are asking advice of people who don’t like kre8iv spellings? And what’s up with the sudden concern so many people have about very common names being mispronounced? And why do they think they can avoid all confusion by spelling it phonetically?
Personally, it annoys me when anyone does that on any message board, not just Nameberry. If you’re posting somewhere that is meant for advice and discussion, you can’t get mad when people give their opinion on what you’ve posted. It’s even more ridiculous when people post a question and then get mad because the answer people give them isn’t the answer they wanted to hear. For example, I’ve seen several threads that have gone like this:
Original Poster: [name]Do[/name] you think that [name]Lynn[/name] could still work as a boy’s name?
Response 1 : No, I think it’s way too feminine for a boy.
Response 2: Maybe in the middle, but not as a first name.
Response 3: I think a boy named [name]Lynn[/name] would get teased.
Original Poster: Well I love it and am going to use it anyway, so there!
I mean, why ask a question if you don’t really want to hear what anyone else has to say?
I usually hope they’re trolls, but considering the number or ridiculous spellings I see on an almost daily basis, I still wonder. And so many of these new creative spellings aren’t creative at all - because I keep seeing them over and over on real babies. Like [name]Emersyn[/name] and [name]Khloe[/name]. And no sooner did I find out that [name]Kinsley[/name] is not a fake name, I see there are already a bunch of Kinzleighs and Kinzlees, and - OK, I actually can’t come up with a spelling that doesn’t have at least 5 babies associated with it in 2011.
[name]Pansy[/name] - I think that’s the bottom line, of course. You can’t ask for advice, but then put parameters on it. I think you’re right that lots of these posters are just looking for praise on how awesome the name is, not actual feedback. That’s why I always respect people who post their name, get lots of negative feedback, and then thank everyone for their honesty. Your family and friends may not want to hurt your feelings, but Berries are going to give it to you straight!
Sometimes I think people just need to be woken up to how stupid that name looks/sounds, or maybe their missing something. I know people have pointed out that some of the names I like “sound like” something else, or what you can make from them will get teased. I like getting that Information, it’s why I post.
What you may not know is that all the schools in UK broke up for summer holidays this week. So, my guess would be that there are a lot of bored teenagers out there trolling…! Is a pain though because genuine threads are getting lost in the onslaught.
My very first post here I was scared of my favorite name getting trashed, so I said to go easy on me. And that’s exactly what I got: all positive opinions. Ask, and you shall receive. It wasn’t a representative sample of the real world though. I didn’t have anything more than when I started. The negative opinions are helpful!
