Peregrine Vibes

Hello berries
I’m currently in my second trimester, expecting our first earthside baby, and we’re having a boy :blue_heart:

We’re planning to keep the name private until after he’s born, to keep unwanted comments from friends and family to a minimum

We’re in love with the name Peregrine, and we think his full name will be
Peregrine William Oswin [Lastname]

We love Peregrine for its nature connections (Peregrine Falcon), the fantastical vibe, literary connections (LOTR, Ms Peregrines Peculiar Children, etc.), and easily accessible nickname Perry. We have an oddly spelled last name, so at least one easy nickname is a must.

William is an important family name to my husband, and we want him to have a classic middle to fall back on in case he wants something more familiar later in life.

Oswin means “God’s friend”, and as both my husband and I have spent years deconstructing from religious ideologies that have been harmful to us, the idea that our child can connect to spirituality/the divine in a way that feels healing and safe like a friend is really special for us.

I’ve been pretty confident about it, but the other day my brother (who’s in his early 20s, and was named Gideon before it was cool, which he always resented) made a comment that if we give our kid a weird name, he’ll be the empathetic uncle who can commiserate and walk him through it. And I was like… I appreciate the sentiment of being supportive, but I’m hoping Peregrine won’t come off as inherently weird to people?

Idk, what are your first impressions or associations with Peregrine/Perry? I know it’s not popular, but I feel like it’s not shockingly unusual :woman_shrugging:t3:

If you met a Peregrine/Perry as a baby, child, teen, or adult, what would your first thoughts be? Or if you saw the full name on a baby announcement? What would you expect that person to be like?

Thanks!!

My favourite book series! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I think Peregrine is so, super cool. He’ll love his name!! I know a Perry and he’s always told me that he wishes his full name was Peregrine!

This feels a little bit of a rude thing to say!
I personally don’t find it weird, if I met a Peregrine I’d be over the moon.
Obviously, there’ll be critics - people who don’t like the name. Not everyone has to like a name for you to use it - it’s all about what’s important to you!

Totally my thoughts! His full name is just amazing. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

:heartpulse:

I don’t have much to say, other than [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] [name_u]William[/name_u] [name_m]Oswin[/name_m] is literal perfection in every way. I audibly gasped reading the combo. SO handsome, meaningful and strong. I so adored reading how you came to choose the names, and it is so beautiful how much meaning you have put into each choice.

I would absolutely love to meet a [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] at any age, but full disclosure, it’s my favourite name :joy: I picture a [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] (Perry) to be someone connected to nature, intelligent and a student of life. I think [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] and [name_u]Perry[/name_u] are both appoachable ‘kind-sounding’ names with no negative connotations.

If I saw the full name on a baby announcement, I wouldn’t stop talking about it for weeks and would have major baby name envy. I so adore [name_m]Oswin[/name_m], too! Each of the names have such a beautfiul meaning and backstory, also. I really like the flow, and like how you have incorporated ‘safe’ and ‘unique’, making his name approachable, not too out there, yet not boring.

Congratulations on your upcoming arrival! Follow your heart ! Wising you all the very best

Absolutely gorgeous name, in every way! I love the thoughtfulness you’ve put into each element, and the combo sounds beautifully Arthurian.

I adore the name [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u]! [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s unusual, I think most people will have very positive reactions to it. There are so many LOTR fans out there (including myself!), which means the first association for many people will likely be either Tolkien’s character, or the peregrine falcon - both amazing namesakes!

[name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] feels literary, magical and powerful - I love it personally. Plus, it gives the nicknames [name_u]Perry[/name_u], [name_u]Pip[/name_u], or even [name_u]Reggie[/name_u], which feel more grounded.

I think [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] is a bit more middle name-ish myself but it’s a great name!

Also, remember, your brother does not have to meet [name_u]Perry[/name_u] if he keeps that attitude and/or those comments up

Congrats on baby boy!

hard same

I already think me and @billie_154 are the same person when it comes to names but I think we’ve just found a third  Peregrine William Oswin is incredible.

Peregrine is my top boy name too, and if I have a boy I will 100% use it. I love all the vibes you mentioned, it’s nature-y and aristocratic and literary and magical and I love it.

I do this with my combos too! Haha

Your reasoning behind Oswin is so beautiful. Genuinely I have no notes, this whole name is just chef’s kiss 🫶🏻

I love the name Peregrine. It would be high on my own list, except that my bff has one  I think she intended to call him Perry, but he’s 100% a Pippin/Pip. He’s a fun kid, introverted but loves his couple close buddies, competitive, a middle kid so knows how to blend in but also compete to be seen :slightly_smiling_face:

Her other sons also have unusual names. Collectively, people do react to their names as “weird.” I wouldn’t let it stop you :woman_shrugging:

ETA: If you check the database entry for Peregrine, I think my friend is the Berry to which it refers

Obviously that depends on your relationship, but I think that’s a sweet, funny, and brotherly thing to say. If I was having a baby and my brother said that to me, I wouldn’t be at all offended.

I’m not necessarily obsessed with the flow of the combo - Peregrine and Oswin both ending in N sounds, William ending in the similar M sound, and there being a three syllable name followed by two two syllable names.

Peregrine feels very posh, cool, aloof. Genuinely adore it I think it’s a fantastic name. I’m not fond of Perry I think it cheapens it. But I’d love to meet a Peregrine. It’s a 10/10 name.

Your brother is projecting. If he has any off color comments like this once your son is old enough to understand, I would explain to your son what that means and not to take it personally. Uncommon or “weird” names are the norm these days and I doubt your brother would feel the way he does if he born now. Don’t let his insecurities talk you out of using the name you love. I think it’s perfect.

And to answer your question, I associate [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] with [name_m]Peregrin[/name_m] Took, but I’m a big [name_m]Tolkien[/name_m] nerd (my daughter’s name is Arwen). [name_u]Perry[/name_u] is a fun nn because a lot of kids will associate it with the awesome [name_u]Perry[/name_u] the Platypus character on [name_m]Phineas[/name_m] and Ferb. That and if he tells kids he’s named after a falcon, a bird of prey, they’re probably going to think that’s pretty cool. [name_f]My[/name_f] youngest is [name_u]Raven[/name_u] and other kids always think her name is the coolest. lol

Thank you all for your beautiful comments! This gives me a lot more confidence to use the name, and I’m glad other people feel the same way about [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] as I do!!

To clear it up, my brother is so excited to love this baby, and his comment was 100% just trying to be funny and find a way to connect. I wasn’t offended! It just prompted me to reach out to the name nerds for some quality advice :joy:

Thank you for all your encouragement :blue_heart:
@marysia I appreciate the feedback. I did notice the flow issue with all the M’s and N’s, and it tripped me up a bit too, but I don’t think it’s a dealbreaker for me? Definitely gives me something to think about. Thanks

@benton_s_mama I am 100% okay with the [name_u]Perry[/name_u] the Platypus references :joy: we genuinely love P&F. I imagine any kid would be excited to be named after the fastest bird in the world; I hope mine will be! [name_u]Raven[/name_u] is so pretty
