I usually hate it when legit male names are stolen by the ladies. And I’m not usually a fan of unisex names. But lately I’ve been loving [name]Peregrine[/name] for a girl. You hardly every hear it Stateside, so would it be so terrible to use it for a little lady?
I like it! But I’d never use it for a fn. Maybe I’m just not so brave after all. lol
I am not a fan of the name for either gender. But that’s me.
I’ve actually never heard [name]Peregrine[/name] used as a name - so I don’t have a strong association of it as a male name.
Edited for privacy.
[name]Peregrine[/name] is all-male to me due to its strong association with the falcon. [name]Lark[/name] or [name]Wren[/name] would be better choices for a female. [name]Peri[/name], [name]Perri[/name] or [name]Perrie[/name] would be alternatives too.
I agree with this. I’ve been thinking about [name]Peregrine[/name] as a MN for my own list due to my family’s connections to the Mayflower (that, and I just couldn’t help but start to fall for it… @saracita00, you have awesome taste!). I just can’t imagine it on a girl. It seems too harsh for a girl for me, but I do think if you use it you could use [name]Pippa[/name] or [name]Pippy[/name] as a nn, but still, when I think of what a peregrine is, I can’t help but think boy. It doesn’t have a very girly, dainty vibe to it. Not that girls’ names have to, but you know. I can’t even picture this on a tomboy. Sorry.
I agree with @mischa that other bird names ([name]Lark[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] are great suggestions! I would also add [name]Sparrow[/name] and maybe [name]Robin[/name] and [name]Starling[/name]) would work much better than [name]Peregrine[/name], personally.
Feels masculine to me. I have too many associations (the falcon, the [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings character). So no, I don’t like it for a girl.
It is rare, but it’s historically been used for males and, to me, has a very masculine vibe. I’ve been tracking saracita’s naming journey and am looking forward to the birth of her little [name]Peregrine[/name]. I’d add Kestrel to the other suggestions. My dad really wanted to name one of my sisters Kestrel, and they ended up compromising by giving it to her as a middle name. Kestrels are just as ferocious as peregrines, but they’re so tiny and cute that they have a more feminine look. The name sounds more girly, too. Best wishes!
I wouldn’t.
Only [name]Peregrine[/name] I know is [name]Peregrine[/name] Took form [name]Lord[/name] of The Rings, and it was always being yelled at by Gandalf. It’s not a pretty name either imo.
I agree with this, completely.
[name]Peregrine[/name] is on my list for a girl.
It’s on my list for a boy. I can’t see too much feminine about it. [name]Peregrine[/name] and [name]Hawk[/name] are amongst the only bird names I hear as being all boy.
I like [name]Kestrel[/name] for a girl, which is another bird of prey.
I’m not sure why the falcon makes it masculine. I believe that female falcons were actually often preferred for hunting, because they’re bigger and fiercer, and it wasn’t uncommon for women to hunt with falcons when that sort of thing was popular. [name]Lark[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] are pretty, but I’d hate for a name to only be for a girl if it’s pretty, and only for a boy if it’s fierce.
But then, I’ve actually always been a little lukewarm on [name]Peregrine[/name] because it does strike me as somehow feminine. There’s a [name]Prince[/name] [name]Peregrine[/name] in the book The Ordinary [name]Princess[/name] (and anyone with a [name]Peregrine[/name] should find a copy, because it’s a sweet book appropriate for a young reader), and I really loved that book when I was little, but I could never quite figure out why it was a boy name.
I don’t think the “fierceness” of the animal is an issue. I like [name]Ursula[/name] which ties to bears, and assorted [name]Leona[/name]/[name]Leontyne[/name] type girls names that relate to lions, and I like Kestrel. I could see getting into Tigress. [name]Cat[/name]/[name]Kitty[/name] is a classic nickname style, and they’re carnivores.
I just prefer [name]Peregrine[/name] as a boy’s name.
But it’s possible I’m defensive as there’s hardly any good P names for boys.
Girls have so many good nature names, and I love nature names.
In my opinion [name]Peregrine[/name] isn’t a boy or a girl…its a bird, and a bird of prey at that. Seems like a heck of a way to start your sweet little girl off in the world.
I think it´s pretty. It just means pilgrim which could also be a woman. I think it would be nice on a girl.
For me it’s a boys name and i simply can not think of it on a girl.
Firstly any character name in [name]Lord[/name] of the Rings is hard to get past.
Secondly, the falcon makes me think masculine too, I wouldn’t name a girl [name]Falcon[/name] either and not as it’s more fierce than a [name]Wren[/name] or [name]Lark[/name], i just think names tend to be either male or female in sound and [name]Falcon[/name] & [name]Hawk[/name] seem male too me.
[name]Peregrine[/name] Took ([name]Lord[/name] of the Rings character, you know) was most certainly male. Because of that, the name [name]Peregrine[/name] is most certainly not feminine at all to me.
I have to agree with the others, I find [name]Peregrine[/name] to be a boy name only. Maybe you could use it as a middle name for a girl though?
