PERFECT sib for Finn & Mabel?

[name]Hi[/name] Berries,

See bottom of page one for an UPDATE! I’d love some thoughts

I’m a first-time poster, long-time lurker, and I’m half-excited/half-panicked to finally be needing some help from you all! I have a son, [name]Finlay[/name] [name]Augustus[/name], and a daughter, [name]Mabel[/name] [name]Jessamine[/name], who go primarily by [name]Finn[/name] and [name]Missy[/name]. [name]Mabel[/name]'s nickname came upon by accident, as I had actually been dying to use the nickname [name]Maisy[/name]. But, my husband called her “[name]Little[/name] Miss [name]Mabel[/name]” one too many times, and soon everyone from her brother to the neighbors to herself were using [name]Missy[/name] regularly. I’ve grown to love it though (especially after watching [name]Missy[/name] [name]Franklin[/name] in the Olympics! She is such a sweet shining star!) and now I’m looking for another name with a little bit of kick to it in an unexpected nickname.

For girls, our initial thought was [name]Josephine[/name], as she could stick with the longer version or pair to down to a multitude of nicknames depending on her personality ([name]JoJo[/name], [name]Posy[/name], [name]Josie[/name], [name]Poppy[/name]). But it hasn’t felt “right” yet. Also I’m worried its too similar to [name]Jessamine[/name].

For boys, we are completely stuck. Like knees deep in the sand. At the beginning of the pregnancy, I was thinking of [name]Leo[/name], but I can’t find a longer version that feels right. And I’m not quite convinced of just [name]Leo[/name] yet.

We’d love suggestions! [name]Finn[/name], [name]Missy[/name], and … ? [name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name], and … ?

I love [name]Leo[/name] just on it’s own, but I agree, its really hard to find a full name for it.

[name]Benjamin[/name]
[name]August[/name]
[name]Benedict[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Grey[/name]

Well first off, first the whole “just [name]Leo[/name]” thing, I personally prefer just [name]Leo[/name]. But perhaps [name]Leonardo[/name]? I think [name]Finlay[/name] & [name]Leonardo[/name] make great brothers!

I think [name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Amelia[/name] would make a nice sibset.
Some more girl suggestions-
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name], & [name]Sawyer[/name].
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Penelope[/name] (NNs: [name]Penny[/name], [name]Poppy[/name], [name]Posy[/name], etc.)
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Hadley[/name].
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Charlotte[/name] (NNs: [name]Lola[/name], [name]Charlie[/name], [name]Lottie[/name])

Some boy suggestions:
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Greyson[/name] (NNs:[name]Grey[/name], [name]Sonny[/name])
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Benjamin[/name] (NNs: [name]Jamie[/name], [name]Ben[/name], [name]Benny[/name])

[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Remington[/name] (NNs: [name]Remy[/name])

I think [name]Josephine[/name] is a little too long and [name]Leo[/name] is a little too short for the other fns in your sibset. What about using these as mns though?

[name]Ronan[/name] [name]Leo[/name] ([name]Ro[/name])
[name]Simon[/name] [name]Leo[/name] ([name]Si[/name])

Oh, I love your children’s names!

[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Josephine[/name] seems pretty perfect to me, and with the nicknames [name]Finn[/name], [name]Missy[/name] & [name]Josie[/name] - too cute!

I don’t think [name]Leo[/name] has the same feel as the other two names, almost seems a little too modern/trendy to fit perfectly.

[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Edward[/name]
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Adam[/name]

What about [name]Lionel[/name] as a full name for [name]Leo[/name]? I also like the suggestion of [name]Theodore[/name] ([name]Theo[/name]).

For girls, I love some of the suggestions above, but particularly think [name]Rosemary[/name] with the nickname [name]Rosie[/name] would be a really sweet choice.

Wow! I want to thank everyone so much who responded. We went from feeling lost and without any options to having so many we like, it took my husband and I a few days to sort it all out

Looking at all the suggestions and my kids’ names, I think my family could go in one of three directions, pairing [name]Finlay[/name] and [name]Mabel[/name] with either a vintage name, a classic name, or a name that’s becoming more popular/on-trend. So I’ve split our favorites into each of these three categories. I’d love thoughts on what goes best! Once I narrow it down a little further, I’ll start pairing up some middles!

Vintage:

Boys - [name]Edwin[/name] ([name]Ned[/name]) – really really really liked this suggestion!
[name]Harvey[/name] (can’t think of a good nickname, maybe something whimsical like [name]Hopper[/name]?)
[name]Wilson[/name] (Wils)
[name]Nolan[/name] (Nols/[name]Nils[/name])

Girls - [name]Ruby[/name] ([name]Rue[/name])
[name]Theodora[/name] ([name]Teddy[/name] – saw this on another forum post, and my heart melted a little bit)
[name]Georgia[/name] ([name]Gia[/name])

Classic:

Boys - [name]Lucas[/name] ([name]Luca[/name])
[name]Theodore[/name] ([name]Theo[/name])
[name]Benjamin[/name] ([name]Jamin[/name] – I know a family who calls their son this and it fits him to a tee!)

Girls - [name]Amelia[/name] ([name]Mia[/name] or maybe [name]Lia[/name]) – really like this one too, thinking that [name]Mia[/name] might be too close to [name]Missy[/name] though
[name]Juliet[/name] ([name]Jules[/name])
[name]Lucy[/name] ([name]Lulu[/name])

Popular/Trendy:

Boys - [name]Declan[/name]/[name]Donovan[/name] ([name]Duke[/name]) – I have fallen head over heels for this nickname, but don’t like [name]Douglas[/name] or [name]Duke[/name] by itself
[name]Emerson[/name]/[name]Greyson[/name] ([name]Grey[/name])/[name]Samson[/name] ([name]Sam[/name]) – love [name]Emerson[/name], but has it gone to the girls? and I can’t think of a good nickname. [name]Greyson[/name] feels super trendy… and my husband seems to love [name]Samson[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name] ([name]Ro[/name]/Ru) – another one that maybe has gone to the girls, but I’m liking it for a boy
[name]Cooper[/name] ([name]Coop[/name]) – I’m not sure it fits well enough with [name]Finlay[/name] and [name]Mabel[/name], so its a little more of a guilty pleasure

Girls - [name]Imogen[/name] ([name]Ginny[/name] – as we pronounce it ih-muh-gin)
[name]Juno[/name] ([name]Jinx[/name])
[name]Sophie[/name] ([name]Soph[/name])

I know this is one monster of a post, but if we end up having more children than this next little bugger, I think we’d move in the same direction that we choose now, so its feeling like a big decision. I’d really appreciate some thoughts. (and more suggestions are always welcome!)

Thanks as always,
[name]Olive[/name] and [name]Dylan[/name]

[name]Glad[/name] we’ve all been some help to you!

I think the more classic/vintage route is the best for you because the popular and trendy will date pretty quickly.

[name]Imogen[/name] is a classic name to me, I’m aware it’s not at all popular in the US but it’s well within the top 50 here in the UK and has been for a while now. I do prefer the nickname [name]Immy[/name] but [name]Ginny[/name] is sweet too. I think [name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Imogen[/name] is utterly perfect for you and your family. I could also imagine a potential sibset of [name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name], [name]Imogen[/name] & [name]Georgia[/name], which follows the classic route again.

For a boy I do love the idea of [name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Rowan[/name] and again I don’t see [name]Rowan[/name] as trendy - it might be if used on a girl. However, [name]Theodore[/name] is my absolute favourite and he could then go by [name]Theo[/name] or [name]Teddy[/name]. [name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Theodore[/name] would be gorgeous. Having writtin this out I can now see why [name]Theodora[/name] is appealing to you too, so behind [name]Imogen[/name] that would be my second favourite girl choice.

My vote goes to [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Rowan[/name] (my two favorites from the list). I don’t think that [name]Mia[/name] and [name]Missy[/name] are too close, and although it’s also being used for girls the boys still have the majority with [name]Rowan[/name] on the SSA list (and I don’t think it would be too “girly”).

Other ideas I thought of along the lines of [name]Rowan[/name] if you’d prefer something else are [name]Rory[/name] (also being used for girls, but as with Rowan the boys still outnumber the girls) and [name]Ronan[/name].

[name]Hi[/name], I love the names you already chose for your son and daughter. A few names for your baby on the way that come to mind are:

GIRLS:
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Virginia[/name] ([name]Ginny[/name])
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Hadley[/name] ([name]Hattie[/name])
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Louisa[/name] ([name]Lulu[/name])
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Susanna[/name] ([name]Susie[/name])
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Julianne[/name] ([name]Julie[/name])
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Rosemarie[/name] ([name]Romy[/name])

BOYS:
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Eli[/name]
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Henry[/name]
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name] ([name]Ollie[/name])
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Harrison[/name] ([name]Harry[/name])
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Asher[/name] ([name]Ash[/name])
[name]Finn[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] and [name]Milo[/name]

Good luck in making your decision! Please post back your final choice!

[name]Lyra[/name]

I love [name]Rowan[/name] for you. It sounds so nice with brother [name]Finlay[/name] and I still think boy when I hear it. I think even if it becomes more feminine, the nickname [name]Ro[/name] is always going to feel pretty masculine or at least uni.

I also really like [name]Donovan[/name]! Also feels really natural with [name]Finlay[/name]. It’s just a long-time love of mine, and actually I don’t think it’s really trendy/popular. Feedback I’ve gotten on it is that it’s mildly dated - ha so it sounds like I’m warning you off, but, it could be a plus depending on how you look at it. And if you’d often use the nn [name]Duke[/name] it matters less anyway. [name]Donovan[/name] [name]Lucas[/name] nn [name]Duke[/name] is particularly logical.

I really love [name]Imogen[/name] for your girl, for the reasons a pp posted.

I don’t really think you’re considering any bad ones. I do think [name]Grayson[/name] is going to feel dated down the road (but I like it anyway), and [name]Samson[/name] is such a tragic Biblical figure that it gives me pause. I think [name]Gray[/name] or [name]Gregory[/name] and [name]Samuel[/name] are nice further options that are similar.

Good luck!

I like [name]Theadora[/name] with an A instead of an O. Also with the nn [name]Thea[/name].

My favorites from your new list are:

Girls–
[name]Theodora[/name]: Such a beautiful name. [name]Thea[/name] is a beautiful nickname too!
[name]Georgia[/name]: I also love [name]Georgie[/name] as a nickname.
[name]Imogen[/name]: [name]Love[/name]. It’s my cousin’s name and we call her [name]Immy[/name].

Boys–
[name]Theodore[/name]: [name]Theo[/name] is one of my all time favorite nicknames.
[name]Harvey[/name]: Great underused name. You could use [name]Harry[/name] as a nickname. Or just Vee.

OMG love the suggestion of [name]Jinx[/name] as a nickname for [name]Juno[/name]!!

My faves with [name]Finlay[/name] and [name]Mabel[/name] in each direction are:

Vintage: [name]Edwin[/name] ([name]Ned[/name]) & [name]Georgia[/name] ([name]Gia[/name])
Classic: [name]Theodore[/name] ([name]Theo[/name] - or you could use [name]Ted[/name] or [name]Teddy[/name]) & [name]Juliet[/name] ([name]Jules[/name])
Popular/Trendy: [name]Declan[/name] ([name]Duke[/name]) & [name]Imogen[/name] ([name]Ginny[/name] – as we pronounce it ih-muh-gin)

Oh My Goodness. [name]Mabel[/name] nn [name]Missy[/name] is one of the sweetest, sweetest names i have ever ever heard. Swooon!

If the little one ends up being a boy, I have to agree with your hubby about [name]Samson[/name]. I mean, i could just die with that sibset.

[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name], [name]Samson[/name] - [name]Finn[/name], [name]Missy[/name] & [name]Sonny[/name]

Done and done in my books! As for a girl, hmm lets see. Im not loving [name]Josephine[/name] - she is too long and almost stuffy with [name]Finlay[/name] and [name]Mabel[/name]. Though, I do like her nn [name]Posey[/name], and I would almost be tempted to use that as a first name.

[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Posey[/name]. [name]Finn[/name], [name]Missy[/name] & [name]Poe[/name]. Now that is fantastic!

[name]Posey[/name] is also a really fun nickname for [name]Primrose[/name], but i even find her a bit stuffy in comparison to your two now.

Maybe:

[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Hadley[/name] nn Haddie
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Clementine[/name] nn [name]Cleo[/name]
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Colette[/name] nn [name]Collie[/name]
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Holly[/name]
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Agnes[/name] nn [name]Aggie[/name]
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Betty[/name] nn [name]Bee[/name]
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Gloria[/name] nn Glow
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Blythe[/name] nn [name]Bee[/name] or [name]Bliss[/name]
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mabel[/name] & [name]Willa[/name] nn [name]Billie[/name]

Okay, so absolutely jumping for joy over [name]Finn[/name], [name]Missy[/name] & [name]Billie[/name] ([name]Willa[/name]) + [name]Finn[/name], [name]Missy[/name] & [name]Bee[/name] ([name]Betty[/name]) + [name]Finn[/name], [name]Missy[/name] & Haddie ([name]Hadley[/name])

So my #1 choices for you would be:

[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mable[/name] & [name]Samson[/name] - [name]Finn[/name], [name]Missy[/name] & [name]Sonny[/name]
[name]Finlay[/name], [name]Mable[/name] & [name]Willa[/name] - [name]Finn[/name], [name]Missy[/name] & [name]Billie[/name]

Good luck!
