Peridot

I’ve been thinking about the name since I saw someone’s signature on here.

[name]Do[/name] you pronounce it as PAIR-ih-doh or PAIR-ih-dot or something else entirely?

[name]Do[/name] you think it would only work as a name of a child born in [name]August[/name] or as a method of honoring someone born in [name]August[/name] (since it isn’t one of the more common gemstone names)? I’ve thought of the combo [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Peridot[/name], but I don’t really have any reason to honor someone in [name]August[/name], and I could not be certain that a possible daughter of mine would be born in [name]August[/name], haha.

What do you think of gemstone names in general?

Thanks!

Pera-doh is how I say it & [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Peridot[/name] is gorgeous! I make the [name]August[/name] connection immediately cause it’s my grandmothers birthstone. I am a fan of more obvious honor names, but it works to honor an [name]August[/name] birthday loved one. I would figure the kid is born that month or the month itself is relevant to the parents or just that the parents are interested in crystals. I think of peridot as a crystal like quartz or citrine moreso than ruby or opal which I associate more with jewelry. This puts peridot in an earthier category to me which I like. Less blingy & more hippie/natury to me.

I say Perr-ə-doh. Not pair.

I like it. I like a lot of gemstone names though. Also green is one of my favourite colours.

I love some gemstone names and am cool on others, though. I love [name]Opal[/name], [name]Peridot[/name], [name]Topaz[/name], and [name]Emerald[/name]/[name]Esmeralda[/name] and have them on my list. I have met a [name]Topaz[/name] who wore it well.

[name]Amethyst[/name] is interesting but I love too many other Am- names like [name]Amarantha[/name] and [name]Amaryllis[/name] to probably ever get around to it.

I am not very fond of [name]Pearl[/name] though I like pearls okay, the sound just doesn’t please my ear. [name]Peridot[/name] is prettier sounding to me.

[name]Ruby[/name] is very very intensely popular here and I am not sure if I like it or not. It doesn’t go with our surname in any case.

[name]Sapphire[/name] and [name]Diamond[/name] don’t really work for me at all but I don’t really like diamonds or blue and that could be why I guess? I did meet a [name]Sapphire[/name] once who was the most gorgeous little girl.

Rosequartz (the stone that symbolizes love) I saw somewhere once, and I sort of admire it, but talk about being deep in guilty pleasure territory.

It’s pronounced PE-ree-dot or PE-ree-doh.

I like it, it’s a gorgeous stone and it’s fun to say. It was on my list, but was eliminated. I’d really like to meet a little [name]Peridot[/name] though!

[name]August[/name] has no particular significance to me, haha. I typically try to pick meaningful middle names and “whatever I like” kind of first names.

Can someone set me straight on the pronunciation? I was trying to go pretty phonetic and also how I presume an American might say the name. I prefer the “doh” ending to the “dot.” Does that make [name]Peridot[/name] a French name? Would it then have a “French” r? I think the contested part is at the beginning. So is it: peh-ree (long e like “eel”), peh-rih (short i as in “is”), per-ee (per as in the word per), per-ih. PAIR-ih-doh is (to me) basically the same as PEH-rih-doh. Not sure about the long-e or short-i in the middle though!

Thanks for the feedback!

It is said as [name]Perry[/name] dough. The French part of the name, ‘dot’ has a silent ‘t’ and peri does not have a
‘Pear or pair’ sound the emphasis is is on the short’e’after the ‘p’.

This. The ‘dot’ sound doesn’t exist in the word at all. And the ‘peri’ part is ‘peh-ree’ just like [name]Perry[/name]. The ‘eh’ sound is found in words like: get, bet, pet etc. It’s short and there’s no ‘r’ sound in it at all.

[name]Perry[/name]-dough is right, that’s what I tried to say. It’s allowed to be pronounced with the -t though, it depends on where you’re from.

Thank you renrose - exactly right, and ottilie I know you agree with me but while one may hear someone say it with the ‘t’ on the end I for one would consider the person who said that to be ignorant of its correct pronunciation.

rollo

I would pronounce it with the doh ending. I think it’s quite an interesting name and would be a great way to honor someone born in [name]August[/name].

This is my birthstone and I always pronounced it Peer-eh-dot. But I see now that was wrong haha And it makes way more sense that it would be [name]Perry[/name]-doh. Much prettier. I actually like it. It alwyas sounded so ugly the way I said it. I like it as a middle name for sure.
