Persephone and Cordelia...time to let go?

Everyone seems to be raving about these two names, and I really love them. But it seems as though EVERYONE else loves them and now I know two people (via cyberspace) that want to use [name]Persephone[/name]. [name]Love[/name] the name [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name], but then someone else on nameberry used it!

Gah…should I let these go and look for something less popular? Thanks.

outside of nameberry and the internet those names are not that popular. for a more realistic gauge of popularity go to the social security name list and see each name’s seating.

I have. 178 Cordelias and 110 Persephones in 2010. I’m sure that number has gone up.

This. I don’t think you should worry about it. [name]Even[/name] if the use of [name]Cordelia[/name] is growing, I don’t believe you’ll cross as many of them as some other names. It’s still a unique choice and kind of requires someone who’s a little out there when it comes to names.

There’s a whole community of people on nameberry who are looking for unique names here… but outside of this site, there’s a wider community of people who may not favor it.

… Also! 178 and growing? I scarcely believe you’ll find many named, “[name]Cordelia[/name]” or “[name]Persephone[/name]” in the same room.

[name]Persephone[/name] and [name]Cordelia[/name] are not going to be popular any time soon. [name]Just[/name] because someone on the Internet has used it or thought about using it does not mean it’s destined for mega popularity.

If they were ranked at 178 and 110, caution might be merited. But only 178 and 110 babies with those names born one year in the entire United States is nothing. There are almost 4 million babies born every year in this country! Only 0.00455% of babies born in 2011 would be named [name]Cordelia[/name] and even fewer named [name]Persephone[/name]. (If you’re in the UK, it’d be more like 178/700,000 but that’s still pretty slim.) Most people probably don’t know the story of [name]Persephone[/name]; of the bunch who do, very few will consider that name as an option.

The internet is a great way to connect with people who have similar interests and tastes, so we (and other posters elsewhere) will be much more excited about and receptive to unusual names. If your enthusiasm has inspired some interest in those two names, that’s kinda cool. You will almost certainly never meet these posters or their well-monikered offspring. It’s not like they are neighbors or local friends, so why not keep [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name] or [name]Persephone[/name] on the table?

What the pp said. If you feel a need to go way more unusual than some of the NB taste, you are going to quickly get into some unfortunate territory. That said there are some wonderful names that never/rarely come up here, but, basically things are open minded here enough that you have to be OK with 100-200 girls getting the name in a year : D.

I have NEVER met a little [name]Cordelia[/name] or [name]Persephone[/name]. [name]Just[/name] last year i met an adult [name]Persephone[/name] for the first time. Believe me, these are still rare names.

My three year old granddaughter’s name is [name]Cordelia[/name]. [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Caroline[/name]. She is named after her two great-grandmothers. [name]Cordelia[/name] was wildly popular in the 1890’s–when my grandmother was born. It is having a slight resurgence, but I have yet to meet another [name]Cordelia[/name]. It is a gorgeous name. Everyone we meet thinks it is beautiful.

These people are only on the internet! [name]Persephone[/name] and [name]Cordelia[/name] will never get really popular I don’t think, you shoudl definitely still use them!

Huh? Why? You have far more popular (or soon to be popular) names on your list - [name]Juliet[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Willow[/name] [name]Genevieve[/name].

[name]Persephone[/name] and [name]Cordelia[/name] are never going to be main-stream. When you like a name, you notice it more often. They really are not as common as you may think.

I don’t think that either are as popular as you think. Girls named [name]Cordelia[/name] and [name]Persephone[/name] probably rarely run into others with the same name.

I love the name [name]Cordelia[/name] … I should’ve added it to my list… I first heard it on [name]Buffy[/name], which was one of my fav. shows growing up and one of the main characters was [name]Cordelia[/name]. Then when I got older and took [name]Shakespeare[/name] in high school I heard it again in [name]King[/name] Lear and loved it.

I go through birth announcements for my blogs and I rarely see a [name]Persephone[/name] or a [name]Cordelia[/name].
