For a while I just enjoyed [name_u]Rory[/name_u] from afar, knowing I’d never be able to use him, but now, I think I’ve begun to adore him a little too much!
Obviously loving a new name can be incredibly fun and exciting, but I feel like [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is just a name I shouldn’t like. He’s incredibly sweet, cozy, playful, and just all around an adorable name, but seeing as I had trouble saying my Rs as a kid, I oftentimes struggle pronouncing him. I have to focus quite hard when saying [name_u]Rory[/name_u] aloud, and I feel like that’s not something I should have to do when it comes to my child’s name.
So, could you guys please persuade me against falling in love with [name_u]Rory[/name_u]? [name_u]Or[/name_u], if you feel like this isn’t a big deal, or you just love [name_u]Rory[/name_u], convince me to fall in love with him! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think this is a reason that I should take [name_u]Rory[/name_u] off of my list again? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think anything changes if I were to use [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] nicknamed both [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and [name_u]Rory[/name_u]?
Bonus questions: How do you personally feel about the name [name_u]Rory[/name_u]? If you had a child named [name_u]Rory[/name_u], what would their middle name be? What would their sibling(s) name(s) be?
You’ll be saying his name a lot so you’ll want the name to feel natural and roll off the tongue easily. For me, [name_u]Rory[/name_u] does not roll off the tongue well. It will be very hard for little kids to say as well. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] is one of those trending names that are probably just a phase.
I like Theodore nn Theo and Rory though I think at some point one would eclipse the other - they’re just too different, while I can imagine Theo and Ted both being used in fairly equal measure.
I know a couple of Rorys - the name is immediately likeable if a little poncy. I would keep with the poncy feel, Rory Sebastian with siblings Jasper and Hugh. It’s not the most authoritative name but as I said, it has an immediate charm. Some people will find it hard to say or roll over it. It’s a little too cute for me, I’m not sold on the roar sound, I prefer Rafferty for eg., but I can’t in good faith direct you away from it - there are other names I’d be happy to barricade you from.
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] is… too sweet? Too lovely? Too charming!?
I absolutely love [name_u]Rory[/name_u] as a stand-alone name and as a nickname. Any gender, any time. Oh it’s so lovely.
In one of the plays I wrote years ago for drama class, the character I wrote for one of my best pals was a [name_u]Rory[/name_u] (with [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] as her full name)! I’ll always have a little soft spot for that idea. I’d name my own [name_u]Rory[/name_u] babe:
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_f]Liesel[/name_f] or
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] [name_f]Glory[/name_f] “Rory”
[name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_m]Garen[/name_m] or
[name_m]Raymond[/name_m] [name_m]Orchard[/name_m] “Rory”
One of my pre-k kiddos is a [name_u]Rory[/name_u], and I always trip over saying her name. It’s adorable, it’s cozy, it fits her perfectly but it’s definitely not the easiest to call out quickly!
I love the idea of [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] “Rory” plus it still gives you [name_u]Teddy[/name_u] to fall back on
Is it one you can put on a sort of ‘love-but-wouldn’t-use’ list, so you can love it, without considering it for an actual baby?
As much as I adore the warm, lovely [name_u]Rory[/name_u], if you still find it one you have to focus on and say carefully, it probably isn’t the one. I don’t think that should stop you loving it though - maybe even as a middle name, so you wouldn’t need to say it all the time?
I love [name_u]Rory[/name_u] - lovely meaning, rugged feel, gentle but cool!
I can’t persuade you not to love [name_u]Rory[/name_u], because I love [name_u]Rory[/name_u]. It’s my first son’s name, and it was my very favorite on our list.
I don’t think the pronunciation thing is a reason to take it off your list, because you CAN pronounce it. It may require effort sometimes, but you don’t have the same difficulty now that you did when you were a child. I worried about this a little before we named him, because I had trouble pronouncing “rural” (still do), and thought that Rory’s name might get jumbled up in my mouth the same way sometimes. It doesn’t, though. I pronounce it slowly and carefully when I’m introducing him to someone so that they hear it correctly the first time, but otherwise my mouth has gotten so accustomed to it that it comes out very easily. HE did say “Woe-wee” when he was first learning to say his name, and his sister still does, but they grow out of it. It never brought on any embarrassment.
You could use it as a nickname for [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], like you mentioned, but I don’t think it’s intuitive. [name_u]Rory[/name_u] comes from the name [name_m]Roderick[/name_m], if that’s any help. I did consider briefly if it could be a nickname for [name_u]Robert[/name_u], and I think it could.
I am so glad we gave our [name_u]Rory[/name_u] the name we did. I get a little thrill every time I see it in print or hear someone else use it, and it completely fits him. His middle name is [name_m]Donald[/name_m], after my father-in-law. His siblings’ names are [name_f]Annie[/name_f] [name_u]Marion[/name_u] and [name_u]Nolan[/name_u] [name_u]George[/name_u].
But you’re right that you should not have to focus really hard to pronounce your own child’s name. You’re going to be saying that child’s name a lot, many times every day. So I think it’s okay to love [name_u]Rory[/name_u] in a way where you know it’s never going to happen in real life.
(And I’d never thought of [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] nn [name_u]Rory[/name_u] before… but I love that.)
I like the name [name_u]Rory[/name_u], it sounds nice an traditional but not too overused, cute for kids and adults and very wholesome. Only negative is maybe it’s a little bit of an upper class gentry name, maybe [name_u]Robert[/name_u] or [name_u]Robin[/name_u] nicknamed [name_u]Rory[/name_u]? [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_f]Gloria[/name_f] nicknamed [name_u]Rory[/name_u]?
I think [name_u]Rory[/name_u] [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is nice. For a sister I think [name_f]Grace[/name_f] or [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] would be nice, and [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] for a brother.
