Peter - What do you think?

We are expecting our first child, and my husband is absolutely in [name]LOVE[/name] with the name [name]Peter[/name]. We are Catholic, and he loves the Biblical association, and he thinks it is a good, strong name. I like [name]Peter[/name], too, but I have certain concerns… I do not like the nn [name]Pete[/name]. [name]Will[/name] friends inevitably call him [name]Pete[/name]? Does [name]Peter[/name] have too much teasing potential? I love Classic names, and we definitely will not use anything too trendy. Our 2nd choice would be [name]Theodore[/name], but my husband is not sold… Comments would be great!

I love [name]Peter[/name]! It’s one of my favorite classic names, for sure! I don’t think it’s too much teasing potential. Anything anything would say with that would be such a cheesy, lame tease that he could make fun of them for even saying it. [name]Peter[/name] is so classic that I really don’t think you need to worry about that. As for [name]Pete[/name], hmm. My husband has a friend from childhood who goes by [name]Pete[/name] and [name]Peter[/name]. I don’t know if that was his parents choice or friends just started calling him [name]Pete[/name]. But with all the [name]James[/name]-not-Jims and other similar names shunning their old nicknames, I think you can pull off [name]Peter[/name]-not-[name]Pete[/name].

Thank you for the reassuring advice! I think you are right about the name teasing being way to cheesy

I like [name]Peter[/name] a lot and don’t think I’d let the teasing scare me away from the name. What’s kept me away from [name]Peter[/name] is that I have a [name]Paul[/name] already and the two seem a little too close. I’m mentionning it b/c [name]Paul[/name] is another strong Biblical name but without obvious teasing potential.

I love the name [name]Paul[/name]! The only reason we are not considering [name]Paul[/name] is because we have a one syllable last name, and we want to use [name]James[/name] as the middle name. Together, it all sounds too abrupt with our last name. I also really love [name]Phillip[/name], but my husband really does not care for it (I don’t know why!).

Thanks for the feedback!

I like it. [name]Peter[/name] is a good and strong name. And don’t worry about “[name]Pete[/name]” thing. You may always call him [name]Peter[/name] in front of everyone. They’ll get used to it.

Sounds like you and your dh are discussing the same names that dh and I are. We’re planning on naming our 3rd son (due this summer) [name]James[/name] but before that the top choice was [name]Philip[/name] (a long time dh favorite). I think [name]Peter[/name] [name]James[/name] sounds great!

I have a son named [name]Pete[/name] who is two. [name]Just[/name] [name]Pete[/name] not [name]Peter[/name]. It never fails that people call him [name]Peter[/name], even family members. We also have a son named [name]Nate[/name] and people try to call him nathan. I think people will ask you when you tell them his name is [name]Peter[/name]. You are always going to have those select few that will call him [name]Pete[/name] but I agree with others that you just correct them and they will get the hint.

There are 2 Peters in my family and I don’t think anyone ever tried to call either of them [name]Pete[/name]. It is clear their names are [name]Peter[/name] and that is what they prefer.

We have an almost-two-year-old named [name]Peter[/name] and obviously love the name! He has an older brother [name]Henry[/name] - and when people hear the two names together they usually comment saying what wonderful classic names  I personally loved the [name]Peter[/name] Rabbit and [name]Peter[/name] [name]Pan[/name] associations and also find it to be a refreshing classic choice. Like you, I was worried about the nn [name]Pete[/name] and so far it hasn’t been an issue at all…just one friend who periodically calls him [name]Pete[/name] along with calling my older son [name]Hen[/name]…so go figure  All the best with your little bundle of boy!

Thank you all so much for sharing!! I also love the [name]Peter[/name] Rabbit and [name]Peter[/name] [name]Pan[/name] associations (esp. [name]Peter[/name] Rabbit - so cute!). I think I am sold on the name  We do not know if the baby is a boy or girl, so it looks like we will have either [name]Peter[/name] [name]James[/name] or [name]Susanna[/name] [name]Louise[/name]!
