Which spelling do you prefer? Pronounced [name_f]FAY[/name_f]-lahn. It’s Irish for ‘little wolf’, and was an Irish saint.
[name_m]Phelan[/name_m] is the ‘anglicised’ spelling but honestly the Gaelic [name_m]Faolan[/name_m] seems more logical to me, and more attractive too (I can’t not think of Flan or Phlegm when I look at [name_m]Phelan[/name_m]). But would [name_m]Faolan[/name_m] be pronounced correctly? I don’t know.
And what’s your general opinion? I’m surprised it’s more popular - half [name_u]Finlay[/name_u], half [name_m]Caelan[/name_m]/other trendy --ay-lan names.
If [name_m]Phelan[/name_m] weren’t next to it I probably would not have known how to pronounce [name_m]Faolan[/name_m]. I may have been inclined to think fow-lan vs fay-lan. I’m really not good with Irish name pronunciation.
I like sound of the name. And I do think [name_m]Faolan[/name_m] looks more attractve and it makes sense once you know how its supposed to be pronounced, but you probably will have people mispronouncing it.
Agreed that [name_m]Faolan[/name_m] will be often mispronounced but is also the more attractive. Probably have to decide if aesthetic appeal/Gaelic roots are more important to you, or whether ease of pronunciation is more important.
I probably wouldn’t pronounce either [name_f]FAY[/name_f]-len. I like the look of [name_m]Faolan[/name_m] much better than [name_m]Phelan[/name_m], but the “O” throws me off. Maybe Faelan? (As mom to 5-year-old [name_u]Kaelen[/name_u] I can’t help but [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] this name.)
