I really love [name]Philip[/name] for a boy…Its regal, sophisticated, masculine, and not too common where I live.
Only problem is that I really hate the nickname [name]Phil[/name]! What do you think of [name]Philip[/name], and do you think [name]Phil[/name] is avoidable?
I have known several [name]Phillips[/name] and none of them ever went by [name]Phil[/name]. but that doesn’t mean it won’t happen. I hated the nn [name]Chris[/name], but when my son was around 3 or 4 he decided he liked it so that is what he is called.
I prefer the spelling [name]Phillip[/name]
I know a [name]Philip[/name] who goes by [name]Phil[/name], but I think it’s avoidable. If anyone wants an alternate nickname, I think [name]Pip[/name] or [name]Flip[/name] is nice. And I like both spellings.
I was married to a [name]Philip[/name]. He abhors [name]Phil[/name] and no one ever called him that. He was named after his grandfather who also only went by [name]Philip[/name]. I think you can definitely avoid it.
Surprisingly, I don’t know any [name]Philips[/name]/Phils so I can’t say for sure but I guess it’s avoidable. Like you meet somebody in the market and he/she asks his name, you say: “He’s [name]Philip[/name]. Not [name]Phil[/name] but [name]Philip[/name]”. And politely remind everybody who calls him [name]Phil[/name] that her prefers(you prefer) to go by [name]Philip[/name].
And I personally like this name spelled with double “l” though I think that’s just me.
I think [name]Philip[/name] looks a bit cleaner and more masculine.
I know a handful of [name]Philips[/name] who all go by [name]Phil[/name]. When it comes down to it, as your child gets older it’s going to matter what he prefers. There’s a good chance he’ll prefer to go by [name]Phil[/name] if you choose that name, but if family and everyone else calls him [name]Philip[/name] as a child, it might not happen.
I think [name]Pip[/name] is adorable. I like [name]Philip[/name] better. This is a name I like but I also dislike [name]Phil[/name]. [name]Just[/name] always use the full name or a nickname you like, like [name]Pip[/name].
I went to school with a [name]Philip[/name] who never went by [name]Phil[/name]. [name]Phil[/name] is avoidable, but whose to say he won’t decided to go by [name]Phil[/name] one day.
I prefer the [name]Philip[/name] spelling because, for some reason, [name]Phillip[/name] makes me think of ‘full lip’. I don’t know why, but I do and it’s just an odd association to have with a name.
I think it’s short enough that it’s possible, so that if it is your name you can keep people from calling you that.
However, you never know what he will like.
You can’t control it if a cool kid starts calling him that at school and he likes it and keeps it. If you absolutely abhor it, I’d steer clear.
I slightly prefer [name]Phillip[/name] to [name]Philip[/name], but both are nice. For me, I would never pick a name whose most intuitive nickname I really dislike strongly. For example, I love the name [name]Veronica[/name] and like the nicknames [name]Vera[/name] or Vinca, but [name]Ronnie[/name] or [name]Nic[/name] or [name]Nickie[/name] are just not names I want any future daughter called. I feel like [name]Ronnie[/name] is most intuitive for a certain generation. It’s pretty much off of my list. I just don’t want to be the “[name]Veronica[/name], not [name]Ronnie[/name], [name]Vera[/name] if you must, but absolutely not [name]Ronnie[/name].” mom…I feel like it’s a losing battle. Either she will love [name]Ronnie[/name] cause she loves it or to rebel. Or my [name]MIL[/name] will use [name]Ronnie[/name] cause she loves it or cause she loves getting under my skin. And I just want to avoid being that shrill personality type as much as I can. I think you have to ask yourself if you would mind having a teenage son called [name]Phil[/name] because I think you can only control it through childhood. A lot of little boys called [name]William[/name] or [name]Liam[/name] right now might be [name]Bill[/name] in 10 or so years!
Thanks for the feedback so far. My issue is that I get two completely different images from [name]Philip[/name] and [name]Phil[/name] - Does that make sense?
[name]Philip[/name] sounds sophisticated to me, whereas [name]Phil[/name] sounds…Dated and middle aged at best! I could tolerate [name]Phil[/name] on a teenage son if it were his preference, but as a child, I would probably try to steer clear of it.
It may be off the table any way - My DH tonight suggested we could call him [name]Philly[/name] as a baby and it would be cute, I was not impressed by the suggestion :o
I think it’s avoidable. [name]Just[/name] tell people you perfer [name]Phillip[/name]. Of course, he may just like Phill whrn he’s older, but all in all avoidable. At least I hope so. I just named my son [name]Daniel[/name]. Like you I hate the shortened [name]Danny[/name], or [name]Dan[/name].
I think if you could handle an adult & teen [name]Phil[/name] you should go for it! [name]Pip[/name] or [name]Flip[/name] is a really cute childhood nickname.
I love [name]Philip[/name]! It’s my front runner at the moment. I think [name]Phil[/name] is only going to be avoidable while he’s young. I hated [name]Philip[/name] when I first started to like [name]Philip[/name], but it has started to grow on me. I’ll be pushing for [name]Pip[/name] though.
