Philip?

Hey everyone!

[name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering what your thoughts are on the name [name_m]Philip[/name_m]! I absolutely adore the nn [name_u]Pip[/name_u], and [name_m]Philip[/name_m] looks so nice written down! However, I realized after saying it out loud that I’m not in love with the sound. It kind of sounds like a noise you’d make when you hiccup, and also sounds like “fill up.” (It also sounds like a horse name to me, which is ironic, as it means “horse lover” lol!
I don’t care much for [name_u]Piper[/name_u] or [name_u]Pippin[/name_u] to get the nn [name_u]Pip[/name_u]. Are there other full names that I’m missing?
Should I make [name_m]Philip[/name_m] a mn and still use [name_u]Pip[/name_u]? (Like what I plan to do with [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] ‘[name_u]Kit[/name_u]’?
Would little [name_m]Philip[/name_m] inevitably be called [name_u]Phil[/name_u]?

Thanks in advance!

I absolutely love [name_m]Philip[/name_m] and [name_u]Pip[/name_u]! It is a handsome name and I think it sounds nice aloud, too. But It is totally fine that you don’t! I think you could make it a middle name and still use [name_u]Pip[/name_u], but if you don’t like the name I think you shouldn’t use it as a middle! You should love both names!

You could also use [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u] nn [name_u]Pip[/name_u] or [name_m]Peter[/name_m] nn [name_u]Pip[/name_u]! They aren’t quite as natural to get [name_u]Pip[/name_u], but they are handsome P names and it makes sense in my head at least!

I love the nn [name_u]Pip[/name_u]. I think using [name_m]Philip[/name_m] as a middle name is a great idea. There is no strict rule stating that the nn has to be from the fn, so I would definitely use [name_u]Pip[/name_u] as a nn based off the middle name.

Personally, I find it a bit “old and boring”, although I suppose it could be considered a classic along the lines of [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m], etc.

I think basing a nickname off a middle name is perfectly fine. There’s definitely no hard and fast rule about where nicknames come from. You can be creative as you like!

I’ve always thought [name_u]Pip[/name_u] would be a cute nickname for [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u]. Also my nephew is [name_u]Pip[/name_u], but his full name is Peppino.

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.

I think that [name_u]Pip[/name_u] is adorable. I’m with you. I want to like [name_m]Philip[/name_m], but just don’t love the sound. I think I like [name_m]Philipe[/name_m] though.

Really [name_u]Pip[/name_u] can be a nn for most ‘P’ names. [name_m]Peter[/name_m] is my favorite. [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u], [name_m]Percival[/name_m], [name_m]Pepito[/name_m], Pierto?

I have a pretty complicated relationship with [name_m]Philip[/name_m] too, haha! I like [name_u]Pip[/name_u] a lot and I don’t think that [name_u]Phil[/name_u] is inevitable if it’s used early on
I also have a close friend named [name_m]Philip[/name_m], and he goes by [name_u]Flip[/name_u].

I really like [name_m]Philip[/name_m]! It’s on my long list of middles. I suppose it’s appealing because it’s so classic and fits nicely in that familiar-but-not-too-common category. [name_u]Pip[/name_u] is cute, and I definitely think [name_u]Phil[/name_u] is avoidable.

You could certainly come up with a combo like your [name_m]Wesley[/name_m] [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] “[name_u]Kit[/name_u]” and use [name_m]Philip[/name_m] as a middle name to get the nickname you want. The only problem I see with that is choosing a first name that you don’t mind foregoing the use of in favor of the nickname which is derived from the middle name.

@MichelleM suggested [name_u]Peregrine[/name_u], and, if you like that, it’s a great way to get to “[name_u]Pip[/name_u]” and still use a name you like.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this could help!
