I prefer for a boy and I would assume that [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] is a boy if I see the name written, but it’s usable for a girl.
Initially, I was leaning more toward boy than girl, but I honestly think it could work perfectly well for either gender, especially given the [name_f]Asian[/name_f] influence that a previous poster mentioned. I agree with others in saying that I do think a more feminine middle name would work best, even if other people don’t hear her middle name much (though it will be heard at her baptism if you practice such or graduations or a wedding usually, so that’s something to consider). I think [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] or [name_f]Amaya[/name_f] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] both sound lovely, but there have also been a lot of great suggestions. All in all, I think you’re good to put it on your short list. =] I wouldn’t think twice if I met a little girl named [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and I’d probably think her name was great.
Oh, also a short note on the potential nickname [name_f]Nyx[/name_f]–[name_f]Nyx[/name_f] was the Greek goddess of night/darkness and she was one of the goddesses there at the beginning of creation, so for me since I like mythology, that makes that nickname pretty awesome. haha
I [name_u]Love[/name_u], love, love [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]! It’s probably my top name pick at the moment. I do particularly love it for a boy but I think it’s equally gorgeous on a girl, and would struggle to not pick it regardless of the gender. And having researched the name a little, it appears it’s more of a feminine name. [name_f]Nyx[/name_f] is the name of a greek goddess, so if you intend on giving her a nickname, that’s not a very masculine one.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_f]Lavender[/name_f] is so cute! I think of [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] as a legitimate name rather than a word name so this combo works well for me. And if you’ve seen my signature you’ll see that I’m not shy when it comes to whimsical, naturey, word names!
I really like [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_f]Orelia[/name_f] is sweet too.

The only [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] I’ve ever known was a Chinese-American girl I grew up with, so I always think of it as a girl’s name. She was smart and quirky and creative. We affectionately called her [name_m]Feeny[/name_m].
Great name! I much prefer [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] on a girl. So spunky! [name_f]Nyx[/name_f] is an awesome Nn
I’ve heard of one [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and it’s a girl. It is more popular for boys (it’s top 100 in [name_m]New[/name_m] Zealand for boys) but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it for a girl.
You make a very good point. Also, the sound and rhythm of the name (especially when spoken aloud in combination with the middle or surname) is key. The full name needs to flow, with no awkward breaks between the syllables.
My sister’s name is [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]. We call her [name_u]Rory[/name_u] but her school friends call her [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] at her request. When she was a toddler we called her [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] but [name_u]Rory[/name_u] stuck better.
She loves that her name’s different and she has so many nickname options. All the other kids think she’s cool.
I really like it! I think it’s a unisex name.
Very cute nn options!

I see no reason why [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] should be gendered. Surely there are female phoenixes as well as male?
I don’t see how a mythological bird is gendered. (Then again we gender flowers, stones, months- everything really.) I’ve known 3 people named [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]- 2 female, 1 male. I do like the contrast of the unisex [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] with a feminine middle. [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] also has the ultra feminine nn’s [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] and [name_f]Pixie[/name_f].
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_f]Oralia[/name_f]- [name_f]Oralia[/name_f] is a mouthful.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_f]Lavender[/name_f]- seems a like a fantasy character. I would avoid another word name in the middle.
[name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_f]Amaya[/name_f]- too trendy imo.
I would love [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]. [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] is similar to [name_f]Oralia[/name_f], but more recognizable and easier to say. I love its femininity and the ph repetition.
It’s unisex, my twin cousins are named [name_u]Sierra[/name_u] and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. I love that name.
