This name is in consideration for my baby who is due soon (boy or girl, we have decided not to find out) and suprisingly enough my SO is enamoured with it which rarely happens. Our only problem is pronounciation and spelling because it is the kind of name people tend to trip over it if they are not familar. And this is not a familar name albeit quite rare. So the question is how do you think this name will work? Practically?
Its pronounced FRY-nee
he/she will be joining siblings [name]Romilly[/name] and [name]Artie[/name]
The boy names we are considering are [name]Kit[/name] and [name]Orrin[/name]
And if you have any girl name suggestions that are similar feel free to list them here
When I saw the name, I pronounced it ‘Frinn’ in my head, so as a practical matter I think you will just spend a lot of time spelling the name out and pronouncing it to others. That being said, if you are prepared to do that, then it’s no problem. As an alternative, may I suggest [name]Briony[/name] as a name instead? Good luck
[name]Kit[/name] and [name]Orrin[/name] are great, but Phryne will likely always be mispronounced as [name]Fern[/name] or Frinn. Plus what r_j said.
You might like Thisbe or [name]Xanthe[/name].
Exactly. The historical Phryne is not a great namesake, and with a name this rare, it’s all people will have to associate her with. She appeared naked in front of the Athenian Senate, and was the most beautiful whore in Athens. That’s all we know about her.
I sort of like it…The pronunciation and spelling isn’t intuitive at all, and the association with the prostitute and the meaning toad isn’t exactly that nice. Though the association with the spunky detective (Phryne [name]Fisher[/name]) is pretty cool (which you noted on your other board too). I haven’t read the books, only seen snippets of the tv show but my family members love it. But if you like it go for it, I saw on your other board you also liked [name]Helena[/name] which is a gorgeous name with a lovely meaning. Either way happy naming, hopefully everything works out.
EDIT: I think the pronunciation is more like FRIE-NEE
I thought it was a misspelling of [name]Fern[/name] at first and then I realized what it was…I can dig super unusual rare names, but this one just doesn’t feel particularly attractive to me and the connotations are not positive, either. [name]Phoebe[/name] or [name]Daphne[/name] might be better choices and have similar sounds / spellings.
Are you Australian? Phryne is the name of a character on a popular TV show here (Miss [name]Fisher[/name]'s Murder Mysteries). I think it’s a cute name, but will definitely be mispronounced over the years! However, if you like it, go for it!
I don’t have anything to add that hasn’t already been said, but add me to the list of “no, sorry, it will never be pronounced correctly and I first thought it was a misspelling of [name_f]Fern[/name_f]”. If you like [name_f]Briony[/name_f] or [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], I think they’d fit much better with [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] and [name_m]Artie[/name_m] and they’d be much, much easier to live with.
