Whilst they were slow on the uptake, it didn’t take long before [name_u]William[/name_u] and [name_f]Abigail[/name_f] welcomed more children into their family. [name_u]William[/name_u] [name_m]Jr[/name_m], [name_u]Charles[/name_u] and twins, [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], known affectionally as [name_u]Jack[/name_u], [name_u]Charlie[/name_u], [name_f]Alice[/name_f] and [name_f]Aggie[/name_f], join their now 13 year old daughter [name_f]Bess[/name_f]. Now a happy family of seven, life couldn’t be better although [name_f]Alice[/name_f] is currently sick with typhoid. With Abigail’s father being a doctor, they hope she will improve in his care. Due to his age, [name_u]William[/name_u] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] was unable to join the union army but he put all his efforts into continuing his successes with the farm.

Then, using his medical knowledge, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] enlisted in the Union [name_u]Army[/name_u] as a hospital steward. Youngest daughter [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] [name_m]Dickinson[/name_m] worked her way up to a position as a housemaid in the manor house. There she met and fell in love with [name_u]Henry[/name_u] [name_m]Pyke[/name_m], one of the gardeners. When [name_u]Henry[/name_u] enlisted as a private in the army, they decided to become engaged. Their lives took a turn however when [name_u]Henry[/name_u] was badly injured and his right arm had to be amputated. He was invalided out of the army and came home. The manor house has allowed him to return to work once he has recovered and both him and [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] are saving up their wages to buy a small place to live near the Dickinson’s farm. Until then however, they remain engaged.

Thomas Joseph Payne [1818-, 46] | Quartermaster Sergeant |
Ephraim David Payne [1820-1841, 21] | Carpenter | died of Pneumonia |
Hannah Ellen Payne Marshall [1823-1853, 30] | Died of Childbirth |
James William Payne [1827-, 37]
Sophia Rose Payne [1830-1838, 8] | died of Diphtheria |

Thomas Joseph Payne [1818-, 46] | Quartermaster Sergeant | Amputated Leg
m.1842: Cora Melinda Mason Payne [1821-, 43] | Middle Class |

– Ada Catherine Payne Atkins [1846-, 18]
–m.1863: Dennis Ebenezer Atkins [1844-, 20] | Farmer | Private |

– Helen Sophia Payne [1848-1859, 11] Died of Typhoid Fever
– Mary Dahlia Payne [1850-1856, 6] Died of Scarlet Fever
– Laura Cecilia Payne [1851-, 13]
– Rufus Ephraim Payne [1851-, 13]
– Henry Joseph Payne [1852-1854, 2] Died of Scarlet Fever

The family lost another child, Mary, to Scarlet Fever only few years after Henry. Three years later Helen died of Typhoid fever. Yet the whole decace wasn’t filled with devastation. Dennis was a neighbor kid and in their teens Ada and Dennis became very bound of each other. With Thomas’ permission they got married in 1863. Since Thomas is unable to work after the amputation, he and Cora were more than pleased to get some help with the farm, althought Dennis is still currently enlisted.

Hannah Ellen Payne Marshall [1823-1853, 30] | Died of Childbirth |
m.1843: Samuel “Sam” Charles Marshall [1820-1862, 42] | Shoemaker | Corporal | Fallen in Civil war
– Samuel Charles “Charlie” Marshall II [1846-, 18] | Private | Fallen in Civil War
–m.1864: Alma Theresa Reid Marshall [1846-, 18] | Middle Class |

– Daniel “Daan” David Marshall [1850-, 14]
– Agnes Emily Marshall [1851-1854, 3] Died of Scarlet Fever
– baby Angel [1853] | Stillborn |

Sam never remarried. After his death Charlie and Daan moved to the family farm. In 1864 Charlie married baker’s daughter Alma but sadly only three months after the wedding the family received devastating news of Charlie’s death. Poor Daan continued living with his uncle after losing basically his whole family.

James William Payne [1827-, 37] | Architect | Commissary Sergeant | Amputated Arm
m.1849: Amanda “Mamie” Lou Bridgeman Payne [1827-, 37] | Poor |
– Jeremiah “Remmy” James Payne [1856-, 8]
– Clara Margaret Payne [1858-1863, 5] Died of Tuberculosis
– Dorcas Olive Payne [1859-, 5] Sick with Scarlet Fever
– Andrew “Andy” Elias Payne [1861-, 3]
– Uriah Willis Payne [1862-, 2] Sick with Scarlet Fever

After James graduated from the university the couple bought their own house from the town. During next years their family grew in total with 5 children but they lost little Clara to tuberculosis at the age of 5. In 1861 James got enlisted to the army. He survived the war but lost his left arm. Luckily he was still able to work as an architect.

I want to give some feedback after these few rounds. I have really enjoyed so far. Althought it’s tragic, I like that the families don’t grow too big. I try to give some backstory but I’ve noticed my English vocabulary is somewhat limited

[name_f]Lucy[/name_f] managed to overcome her bout of tuberculosis and [name_m]Will[/name_m] has managed to survive his stint in the Union [name_m]Army[/name_m] as a First [name_m]Sergeant[/name_m] - so far.

DD1 (deceased at 32 in childbirth): [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “Meg”” [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_m]Marshall[/name_m] [name_m]Harris[/name_m]
DH (deceased at 53 from a gunshot, railroad tycoon / [name_m]Major[/name_m] in the Union Army): [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] [name_m]Harris[/name_m]

No one was surprised when [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] enlisted in the military - despite his love for his children, he has had no joy since Meg’s passing. His children were devastated to hear of his death and, using his wealth and reputation, managed to have him brought home to be buried alongside their mother, his dearest wish. His younger children are currently being raised by their eldest sister, [name_f]Posey[/name_f].

—DD1 (22): [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] “Posey” [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_m]Harris[/name_m] Bayles
—DH (25, physician / Corporal in the Union [name_m]Army[/name_m], injured with an amputated leg): [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] Bayles

[name_f]Posey[/name_f], the child most like her mother, has served as a nurse for the Union since the war began - it was in this capacity that she met Dr. [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Charles[/name_m] Bayles, a physician and corporal in the army. They fell in love as quickly as her parents had and were married with all possible wartime splendor on Alexander’s first available leave. She has recently brought him home to Springfield following a leg amputation to recover.

—DS1 (deceased at 4 from consumption): [name_m]Robert[/name_m] [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]

—DS2 (13): [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Edward[/name_m] [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]
—DS3 (deceased at 2 from diptheria): [name_m]Silas[/name_m] [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]

Cal’s service as a private in the Union army ended with his death from infected wounds earned in battle. His two surviving children, [name_f]Emily[/name_f] and [name_m]David[/name_m], are being raised by their Uncle [name_m]William[/name_m] and Aunt [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] in Peoria - the farm is currently being overseen by a hired hand until [name_m]David[/name_m] reaches adulthood.

DS3 (deceased at 25 from tuberculosis, bookbinder): [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] “Sam” [name_m]Elias[/name_m] [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m], never able to overcome his illness, preferred books to almost anything else, leading him to become a bookbinder - he would joke that he did this so that he could read everything before anyone else. He passed away at 25 following an almost ten year battle with tuberculosis. His niece, [name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_f]Samantha[/name_f] [name_m]Marshall[/name_m], is named for him.

—DD2 (10): [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f] [name_m]Marshall[/name_m]

[name_m]Tom[/name_m], believing firmly in the rights of all men, was one of the first to enlist in the Union [name_m]Army[/name_m] once war was declared and has reached the rank of First Lieutenant. He is currently home to recover following a left arm amputation and to settle his household following the death of his wife, [name_f]Amy[/name_f].
