Pippa

So we’ve already got a solid girls name picked out that is not going to change. But I recently come across the name [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] in a book I was reading and absolutely loved it. I’ve never met anyone called [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] in real life. I think it’s very sweet that works well on a baby but also will work nicely when they are older too. Also [name_u]Pip[/name_u] is such a cute nickname. What do you think? Does [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] work well as a name? I like that it’s not very common but isn’t like too out there of a name. Any middle name suggestions are welcome too. Thank you 🩷

Dangerously close to slang for female genitalia in a few languages.

I really like [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]! All the Pippas I know have this as a nickname - they’re full names are usually [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] and for one [name_u]Piper[/name_u]. They all get [name_u]Pip[/name_u] or [name_f]Pippy[/name_f]. In Australia, there was a character in a very popular TV soap/drama called [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] so I think that coloured the name as a stand-alone for many - and I personally would have it as a nickname - but now it comes across as a name fairly close to [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] etc but more timeless in a certain way.

I’ve only heard it (pipe) associated with male genitalia :joy:

I really like the name [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], especially with the nickname [name_u]Pip[/name_u]! I’ve only met one [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] who was about 50 and it suited her really well.

Middle name ideas:

[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Carys[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Holiday[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_u]Marlow[/name_u]

[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] is lovely! She has a chic yet slightly quirky vibe which I really like.

I should add that my native language is one where “pippa” is a common sexual slang term (like a previous poster mentioned), and still I don’t think of that when I think of the name. [name_f]Nor[/name_f] did other people in my life have a strange reaction to it when I mentioned to them a book character called [name_f]Pippa[/name_f]. So I think it’s fine!

In my native language it is a sexual term, but in an [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking context it feels very preppy and [name_f]British[/name_f]. Reminds me of horses, polo, and reading while drinking a coffee.

I’ve never met one. It’s very [name_f]British[/name_f]. It seems spunky.

i’m a pippa !! i can definitely recommend it

i’ve met a couple of other pippas (of a range of ages), but it’s definitely not super common; it feels like a sweet spot name to me - everyone’s familiar with it, but you don’t actually see it around a lot. pippa definitely works well as a name !!

i will provide one caveat which is that (as mentioned by a few previous posters) as a slang word, pippa has some unsavoury meanings in quite a few european languages (i think greek, italian, swedish, and polish). in practice, this isn’t a serious problem, especially if you’re comfortable with the nickname pip (i don’t go by pip anymore, but i’ve used it when travelling in greece and it works well and neutralises the issue). however, if you’re planning on travelling a lot or live in an area with lots of greek, italian, swedish, or polish speakers, it might not be ideal.

the other thing is that surprisingly it has to be spelt out every time. even though pippa has only one spelling and one pronunciation, i get pepper, pepa, and pippin more often than not, and unless i carefully spell it, it’s always written as pipa (even in significant/‘important’ situations e.g. workplace id passes and hospital papers (and yes, i’m sure i’m spelling my own name correctly, i’ve seen my passport)). in my case, this is probably made more common because i live in a super multicultural city/area with a lot of non-native english speakers, for whom pippa is less familiar/intuitive.

overall though, i love my name and would definitely recommend it !! 10/10 no notes. happy to answer any questions !!

for middle names, i love the sound of:

Yeah, pippa/pipa is vulgar slang for female genitalia in Italian, Polish, and, I believe, Swedish. Which would give me pause.

Is the book you found the name [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] A Good girls guide to murder? I love that book

I like [name_f]Pippa[/name_f], also because it’s short for Philippa-and yes it’s quite unique.
[name_f]My[/name_f] middle name suggestions are:
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Larissa[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Nicole[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Flora[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Amber[/name_f]
[name_f]Pippa[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]

It’s a verb meaning “to have sex” in Swedish. It’s slang. It’s not even used much anymore, I think. I have only really seen it in a few dated comedy shows and YA books.

However, Swedish people are generally aware that it’s a name too. Most have heard of [name_f]Pippa[/name_f] Middleton, at least. I don’t think it will be much of an issue, especially if you don’t decide to live here.
