Planet Names

[name]Ever[/name] since my friend [name]Meagan[/name] told me she wanted to name her second son “[name]Jupiter[/name]”, I’ve been thinking about other planet names. . . .
Is “[name]Venus[/name]” the only girl planet name? To me, [name]Mars[/name] and [name]Saturn[/name] and [name]Mercury[/name] sound too boyish. Does anyone have a thought about this?

 !!

Yes, [name]Venus[/name] is the only ‘girl’ planet, because the planets are named after the [name]Roman[/name] gods (and goddesses, in the case of [name]Venus[/name]). For example, [name]Mars[/name] is the god of war, and the [name]Roman[/name] equivalent of the Greek Ares. [name]Jupiter[/name] is [name]Zeus[/name], the king of the gods, and [name]Venus[/name] is the goddess of love and beauty. [name]Even[/name] in terms of sound, I think none of them work for a girl, besides [name]Venus[/name] (which I wouldn’t recommend naming a kid anyway).

Since the names of the traditional planets are taken from classical mythology, yes, [name]Venus[/name] is the only girls’ name among them.

Unless you want to count the trans-Neptunian objects (considered to be small planets by some) out beyond [name]Pluto[/name]. One of these has been named “Sedna,” after the Inuit goddess of the sea. Another (the largest of them) is named “[name]Eris[/name],” for the Greek goddess of discord.

The larger, better-known planets have multiple moons which have lovely names, taken from both mythology and Shakespearean literature. Here are some you might like to consider for girls:

Adrastea ([name]Jupiter[/name])
Amalthea ([name]Jupiter[/name])
[name]Ariel[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Belinda[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Bianca[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Cordelia[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Cressida[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Desdemona[/name] (Uranus)
Despina ([name]Neptune[/name])
[name]Dione[/name] ([name]Saturn[/name])
[name]Elara[/name] ([name]Jupiter[/name])
[name]Galatea[/name] ([name]Neptune[/name])
[name]Helene[/name] ([name]Saturn[/name])
[name]Juliet[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Larissa[/name] ([name]Neptune[/name])
[name]Leda[/name] ([name]Jupiter[/name])
Lysithea ([name]Jupiter[/name])
[name]Miranda[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Ophelia[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Pandora[/name] ([name]Saturn[/name])
[name]Perdita[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Phoebe[/name] ([name]Saturn[/name])
[name]Portia[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Rhea[/name] ([name]Saturn[/name])
[name]Rosalind[/name] (Uranus)
[name]Thalassa[/name] ([name]Neptune[/name])

[name]EDIT[/name]: Irisrose, sorry, I didn’t see your posting before posting my own! And, I agree with you about perhaps best not naming a baby girl “[name]Venus[/name].”

I think [name]Mercury[/name] sounds kind of girlish.

Yeah, planets might be difficult but if you are going for celestial bodies there are a ton of options for girls.

The ones that automatically came to mind:
[name]Andromeda[/name] (nearest Solar System to ours)
[name]Cassiopeia[/name]
Lacerta
[name]Lyra[/name]
[name]Ursa[/name] (as in [name]Ursa[/name] [name]Minor[/name])

When I think of the planets I keep thinking of [name]Pluto[/name] and the Disney dog.

i love [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] for a boy, but i hate Jupe for a nm. [name_f]Themis[/name_f] is the female [name_m]Titan[/name_m] of this planet.

i think [name_f]Venus[/name_f] [name_m]Williams[/name_m] has brought a lot of dimension to the name. from the traditional (love, beauty, sexy, silky, slick, quick, skill) to the athlete. Tethys is the [name_m]Titan[/name_m].

i dont know about [name_u]Mercury[/name_u] for a first on a girl but i am liking it as a middle. also reminds me of [name_f]Marie[/name_f] Curie. Metis is the [name_m]Titan[/name_m].

i think [name_m]Endymion[/name_m] could switch sides, since while its not my fav at all, [name_f]Indy[/name_f] has grown as a name/nm for girls

[name_f]Serena[/name_f]/[name_f]Luna[/name_f]/[name_u]Artemis[/name_u]/[name_f]Diana[/name_f]/[name_f]Pheobe[/name_f]/[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] for the [name_f]Moon[/name_f]. i also like Luminara, which i feel is more [name_f]Moon[/name_f] than [name_f]Sun[/name_f].

[name_f]Apolline[/name_f] vs [name_m]Apollo[/name_m]/[name_f]Thea[/name_f]/[name_m]Helios[/name_m]/Hyperion/[name_m]Sol[/name_m] for the [name_f]Sun[/name_f]

[name_f]Gaia[/name_f]/[name_f]Terra[/name_f]/[name_f]Ceres[/name_f]/[name_u]Demeter[/name_u] ([name_f]Demi[/name_f]) for the [name_f]Earth[/name_f]/Seasons

[name_u]Mars[/name_u] has been used on a girl, feel in this way its like a futuristic [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. if too literal or masculine you can take the god of war’s opposite [name_f]Athena[/name_f] (or the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] [name_f]Minerva[/name_f])

[name_f]Rhea[/name_f] with [name_m]Saturn[/name_m]
(Planets in astrology - Wikipedia)

also it was proposed back in the day that [name_f]Earth[/name_f] had a “Dark [name_f]Moon[/name_f]”, [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]
