Girls:
[name]Matilda[/name], nn [name]Tilly[/name] or [name]Tilda[/name]: [name]Matilda[/name] is quirky in a really fun way. Perhaps I feel that way from the cute movie [name]Matilda[/name]. Nickname [name]Tilly[/name] is dated to me (I know a middle-aged [name]Tilly[/name]), but [name]Tilda[/name] is exotic and cool.
[name]Tallulah[/name], nn [name]Lilou[/name]: I picture an old, sweet, black Jamaican woman, because of the movie Cool Runnings in which one of the character’s says his mother’s name is [name]Tallulah[/name]. In my mind, it’s PERFECT for that character, but seems odd to me on a newborn Californian girl. [name]Lilou[/name] is sweet as a name on it’s own! You may also like [name]Lilo[/name] ([name]LEE[/name]-lo) or [name]Lorelai[/name] (nickname [name]Lolly[/name]?).
[name]Felicity[/name], nn [name]Izzy[/name]: I have loved this name ever since I beheld the beautiful redheaded American Girl character when I was a preteen. The vowel sounds in it, and even the specific consonants, make it sound so petite and soft and energetic and spunky all at once. I prefer the nickname [name]Lissie[/name].
[name]Pepper[/name]: I’ll disagree with previous posters. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Pepper[/name]! My mom had a [name]Little[/name] [name]Golden[/name] Book from when she was little (1950s) about a girl named [name]Pepper[/name] who pretends to be a veterinarian. I think it would be such a cool name, and because of that book and the orphan in [name]Annie[/name], it just seems vintage to me.
[name]Pippa[/name]: Too connected to the royals for my taste. Not that I have any problem with connections to the royals, but this particular name was mentioned in the news so much around the time of [name]Kate[/name]'s wedding, so it just feels trendy and blah to me now. You may like Peppin.
[name]Ripley[/name]: Cute idea, but I don’t like the [name]Rip[/name]- opening. It just makes me think of crude phrases about passing gas.
[name]September[/name]: To me, this is too much of a word to ever feel like a name. I would be afraid that when people hear it, they only ever think of the month, and I would want people to think of the [name]BABY[/name] upon hearing her name, not a month. Typically I love word names, but some of the month names are just too monthy for me.
[name]Imogen[/name], nn [name]Immy[/name]: [name]Imogen[/name] has always felt choppy and awkward to me. While some names come out sounding musical and are fun to say, [name]Imogen[/name] just sounds like harsh sounds blurted out. I like [name]Immy[/name] though.
[name]Cecily[/name]: Cute, but pretty close to the popular [name]Cecilia[/name], and popularity makes me dislike a name as it no longer feels fresh and original. You may like [name]Thessaly[/name]?
[name]Jubilee[/name]: This sounds happy!
It also sounds kind of chubby…but this is one of those names that DOES come out sounding kind of musical.
[name]Petra[/name]: This one sounds kind of ancient to me, and I can’t picture it on a child, but I’m sure it would grow on me once I saw her.
[name]Verity[/name]: I’ve really liked [name]Verity[/name] lately as a middle name (I like the combo [name]Cambria[/name] [name]Verity[/name]–feel free to steal it if you happen to like it as much as I do!). As a first name [name]Verity[/name] feels like a Pilgrim who just walked off the boat. Not a bad thing, but if that’s the image I was going for, I’d choose the name [name]Remember[/name] (nickname Mem) instead. You may also like [name]Amity[/name].
[name]Ottilie[/name]: This one could really grow on me the more I think about it. My first thought is “otter,” but there’s nothing wrong with that; all names sound like SOMETHING, and otters are cute. I think [name]Ottilie[/name] would be really sweet on a little girl…and a teen…and a woman.
Girls middle names I love:
[name]Primrose[/name]: Too much pop culture connection for my taste. Everybody would know where you got it from. (Or ASSUME where you got it from.)
[name]Waverley[/name]: Again, very tied to pop culture in a show I have never seen, Wizards of [name]Waverly[/name] Place. But it is a really cute sound.
[name]Whimsy[/name]: Fun! But remember, middle names are only used in the most formal occasions, like graduations and weddings. Would [name]Whimsy[/name] seem out of place at such an event?
[name]Mazarine[/name]: Ahh…why is this tucked away in the middle name slot?? [name]Mazarine[/name] is SO beautiful! I love the pronunciation mazz-uh-REEN (like “magazine”) and my husband likes MAZ-uh-rin (like “[name]Madelyn[/name]”). [name]Both[/name] are correct, as you may know. [name]Mazarine[/name] looks amazing written out, and sounds like a perfect name that should be popular but is being kept secret.
Darling: Despite what I said earlier about middle names needing to feel appropriate on formal occasions, I have always loved the idea of Darling as a middle name, from my love of [name]Peter[/name] [name]Pan[/name] where the children’s adorable last name is Darling.
[name]Sunshine[/name]: Very hippie. But that’s not a bad thing. The right person could pull this off. Very free-spirited.
Boys:
[name]Asa[/name]: This one has crept to our top five as well. I love how short and simple it is, while having such a regal Biblical history.
[name]Finnley[/name]: This seems really trendy to me, and when I see it, I don’t think of the awesome name, I just think, “Oh, another [name]Finn[/name]- name.”)
[name]Arlo[/name]: [name]Milo[/name], [name]Harlow[/name], [name]Arlo[/name]…these names seem a bit trendy too, but not as bad as [name]Finnley[/name]-type names (though I haven’t checked the statistics on any of them; I’m just guessing by what I see and hear). I like the O-ending boy’s names, and hope they don’t become too common. My current favorite is [name]Thurlow[/name], a name I found in an [name]Abraham[/name] [name]Lincoln[/name] biography that you may like.
[name]Tennyson[/name]: I don’t know if I like this as a first name. It feels like too much of a last name, and a bit TOO tied to the poet to ever feel like it belongs to a child.
[name]Cormac[/name]: Reminds me of poison sumac. You may like [name]Conrad[/name]?
[name]Dex[/name] or [name]Dax[/name]: I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]DEX[/name]!!! I have it on my list too. [name]Love[/name] it! SO simply and fun and great for a baby/boy/man of any age. You may also like [name]Jeb[/name], another much softer favorite of mine.
[name]Kieran[/name], nn [name]Kier[/name]: I think all the Ke- names are fun and perfect for little boys. [name]Keifer[/name], [name]Keegan[/name], [name]Keenan[/name], etc.
[name]Orrin[/name]: This could definitely grow on me. I like O’s and R’s in boys’ names–they feel very little boyish. You may also like [name]Olin[/name] or (totally unrelated but it has an O and R) [name]Crosby[/name].
[name]Flynn[/name]: Hm. Not loving it. When I look at it I see [name]Flem[/name], [name]Floyd[/name], and [name]Lynn[/name], none of which are very charming for a little boy. Maybe you would like [name]Flint[/name], [name]Foster[/name], or [name]Forrest[/name]?
[name]Kellen[/name]: This is different! If I could get past the [name]Kelly[/name] and [name]Helen[/name] sounds, it could really grow on me. I think a boy could wear it well.
[name]Wilder[/name]: This is on my list too! I love it not just because of its cowboyish sound, but because of its [name]Little[/name] House on the [name]Prairie[/name] connection. I think it is a very boyish name that grows into a very manly name. Nice choice.
