Playful and Spunky or Over the Top and Tacky

Hello All!

I’m brand new to Nameberry but have been having a blast browsing through the site and getting inspiration. I don’t currently have any children but I’m a newly-wed and am looking forward to starting a family. Like many of you on this site, I have had more than a mild interest (okay, boarderline obsession) with names, so the thought of naming my very own child is thrilling! I would describe my naming style as playful, spunky, cheery, quirky and definitely not-top-10.

I’d love to throw out my name list and get some feedback from everyone! Specifically, if you think any name on the list goes beyond playful and fun and is downright weird or silly.

A little background, I live in [name]California[/name] and my last name starts with an ‘H’ and ends in ‘son.’ Does this rule out any names ending in ‘-on’ ‘-en’ ‘-in’ or ‘-sen’? I’m running into trouble with many of the boy names I like ending with those sounds and the full name sounds too rhym -y.

Thougths? Also - I’d love any suggestions you might have!

Girls:
[name]Matilda[/name], nn [name]Tilly[/name] or [name]Tilda[/name] (middle name possibilities are [name]Jane[/name], [name]Violet[/name], [name]Valentine[/name]…?)
[name]Tallulah[/name], nn [name]Lilou[/name] ([name]May[/name], which is part of my maiden name)
[name]Felicity[/name], nn [name]Izzy[/name]
[name]Pepper[/name]
[name]Pippa[/name] (possibility of becoming too popular???)
[name]Ripley[/name]
[name]September[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name], nn [name]Immy[/name] (sounds like [name]Emmy[/name])
[name]Cecily[/name]
[name]Jubilee[/name]
[name]Petra[/name]
[name]Verity[/name]
[name]Ottilie[/name]

Girls middle names I love:
[name]Primrose[/name]
[name]Waverley[/name]
[name]Whimsy[/name]
[name]Mazarine[/name]
Darling
[name]Sunshine[/name]

Boys:
[name]Asa[/name]
[name]Finnley[/name] (possibly too popular??? I only know one little boy with this name but it seems to be everywhere on this site!)
[name]Arlo[/name]
[name]Tennyson[/name]
[name]Cormac[/name]
[name]Dex[/name] or [name]Dax[/name]
[name]Kieran[/name], nn [name]Kier[/name]
[name]Orrin[/name]
[name]Flynn[/name]
[name]Kellen[/name]
[name]Wilder[/name]

[name]Matilda[/name] - not tacky in the least. I personally like it.

[name]Tallulah[/name] - love this, I know a lot of people think it’s over the top, but I do not. It’s no different than something like [name]Victoria[/name] or [name]Alexandra[/name]

[name]Felicity[/name] - one of my all time favorites, beautiful name, not tacky at all.

[name]Pepper[/name] - maybe a tad on the tacky side? I like it, but I feel like it makes a better nickname than a full name. I can’t imagine this aging very well.

[name]Pippa[/name] - I doubt it willever become truly popular but I find it a little juvenile - it needs a full name.

[name]Ripley[/name] - THIS, I do find tacky. It’s a masculine surname, such a huge trend, it’s going to look silly in a few years, especially with that uber trendy -ley ending that is popping up everywhere.

[name]September[/name] - I don’t think it’s “tacky”, but I do think it’s weird.

[name]Imogen[/name] - not tacky at all. I don’t love it, but it is far from bad or tacky.

[name]Cecily[/name] - beautiful, classy, sophisticated.

[name]Jubilee[/name] - I like this in theory, but I can see it being juvenile and not aging well at all.

[name]Petra[/name] - not tacky at all.

[name]Verity[/name] - love this, far from tacky.

[name]Ottilie[/name] - another love. Not over the top or tacky

Girls middle names I love:

[name]Primrose[/name] - a tad over the top, but thats not a bad thing for me. I don’t find it tacky at all.

[name]Waverley[/name] - I really, really dislike this immensely. I find it so silly and surname-ish, trendy, juvenile…like [name]Ripley[/name], it has that dreaded -ley ending.

[name]Whimsy[/name] - silly and ridiculous, but in the middle, it would be passable.

[name]Mazarine[/name] - I think this is beautiful.

Darling - a little tacky, but in the middle it doesn’t really matter.

[name]Sunshine[/name] - I think this is a little better than [name]Whimsy[/name] or Darling.

Boys:

[name]Asa[/name] - love, not tacky at all.

[name]Finnley[/name] - maybe rising a little in popularity, but nothing overly dramatic, it has that irksome -ley ending.

[name]Arlo[/name] - really neat, I love it.

[name]Tennyson[/name] - neat.

[name]Cormac[/name] - also neat

[name]Dex[/name] or [name]Dax[/name] - a little “try-hard”, would make a great nickname, though. [name]Dexter[/name] is a great name.

[name]Kieran[/name] - I love [name]Kieran[/name].

[name]Orrin[/name] - nice

[name]Flynn[/name] - never cared for it, I think it’s awkward.

[name]Kellen[/name] - really nice, I like it a lot, I also quite like Keller.

[name]Wilder[/name] - very neat and cool but not in a tacky way.

I think that boys names ending in -en, -in, or -on could work with your last name just fine, but I would stay away from -sen or -son endings.

Girls:
Matilda, nn Tilly or Tilda (middle name possibilities are Jane, Violet, Valentine…?)- love this. I like Matilda Jane as a combo
Tallulah, nn Lilou (May, which is part of my maiden name)- I like Tallulah, not a fan of the nickname though. Tallulah May sounds nice.
Felicity, nn Izzy- not a fan of this name at all.
Pepper- seems like a cute nickname, or pet’s name, can’t picture on a real child.
Pippa (possibility of becoming too popular???) - nice, but yeah it does have the possibility of seeming too popular or trendy
Ripley- love it on a pet, and can maybe see it working for a boy, but can’t picture on a little girl.
September- Love it as a middle name, too daring as a first for my tastes
Imogen, nn Immy (sounds like Emmy)- Love it.
Cecily- I greatly perfer Cecilia
Jubilee- I wish I was cool enough to have a kid that could pull this name off.
Petra- It’s alright, not anything special in my mind. I actually really like the alliteration of Petra Primrose
Verity- nice and different. Verity Primrose, Verity May
Ottilie- Really like this one, but again don’t know if I would ever actually use it. I would pair it with a more common middle, like May or Violet

Girls middle names I love:
Primrose
Waverley
Whimsy
Mazarine
Darling
Sunshine

Boys:
Asa- I’ve never been sure how to pronounce this, so I can’t really say if I like it or not.
Finnley (possibly too popular??? I only know one little boy with this name but it seems to be everywhere on this site!)- I’ve never met one, but I prefer Finnegan, Griffin nn Finn, or ever just plain Finn
Arlo- seems very nickname-y too me
Tennyson- I would love to meet a little Tennyson. I might pair it with a middle name that is more mainstream, so as to give him options if he doesn’t like Tennyson so much.
Cormac- love it. I have a little cousin named Cormac, often shortened to Mac.
Dex or Dax- love as a nickname, Dexter?
Kieran, nn Kier- I like it, not my favorite though
Orrin- interesting, can’t picture it on a child, but that could change
Flynn- love it.
Kellen- this is a good choice. easy to spell and pronounce, yet not super common
Wilder- my favorite on your list. very different, in a good way

Girls:
[name]Matilda[/name] - spunky, maybe a bit old, but I think it’s cute, especially with the nn [name]Tilda[/name]
[name]Tallulah[/name] - I HATE this. I know a lot of people like it, but it sounds tacky and even trashy to me - for no real reason.
[name]Felicity[/name] - very pretty, one of the few virtue names I like a lot
[name]Pepper[/name] - sounds more like a character than a child
[name]Pippa[/name] - only as a nn, it’s very childish otherwise. Maybe [name]Piper[/name]? It’s midway between [name]Pippa[/name] and [name]Pepper[/name], but seems more grounded.
[name]Ripley[/name] - I can only think of [name]Ripley[/name]'s Believe it or Not, so I dislike it
[name]September[/name] - prefer as a mn, but it’s okay. A little over the top.
[name]Imogen[/name] - not huge in the US, but has been very popular in [name]Britain[/name], if you’re concerned about popularity. It’s pretty average for me.
[name]Cecily[/name] - like it, although it’s awfully close to [name]Sicily[/name]
[name]Jubilee[/name] - wayyy over the top
[name]Petra[/name] - like!
[name]Verity[/name] - very nice. nn [name]Vera[/name] (a personal fave)?
[name]Ottilie[/name] - also like.

[name]Primrose[/name] - very trendy
[name]Waverley[/name] - sounds trendy, not sure if actually is
[name]Whimsy[/name] - a bit tacky
[name]Mazarine[/name] - strange, but as a mn it’s alright
Darling - tacky
[name]Sunshine[/name] - tacky

Boys:
[name]Asa[/name] - I know it gets a lot of support on this site, but sounds like a girl’s name to me
[name]Finnley[/name] - like a lot, but might get popular if you’re concerned about that
[name]Tennyson[/name] - trendy-sounding, and too rhymy with a -son last name.
[name]Cormac[/name] - sounds like a car or something. Or core + [name]Mac[/name]. (like the computer)
[name]Dex[/name] or [name]Dax[/name] - sound like nicknames
[name]Kieran[/name], nn [name]Kier[/name] - like this one a lot. “[name]Kier[/name]” sounds a lot like “queer” though so there may be teasing concerns? I like [name]Ren[/name] more as a nn.
[name]Orrin[/name] - neutral about this
[name]Flynn[/name] - like
[name]Kellen[/name] - it’s okay. Very simple, but maybe nearing bland. I think I’ve also heard Kellian.
[name]Wilder[/name] - it’s growing on me. Could seem trendy in the future.

[name]Asa[/name] is pronounced ay-sa.

Girls:

[name]Matilda[/name], nn [name]Tilly[/name] or [name]Tilda[/name]: [name]Matilda[/name] is quirky in a really fun way. Perhaps I feel that way from the cute movie [name]Matilda[/name]. Nickname [name]Tilly[/name] is dated to me (I know a middle-aged [name]Tilly[/name]), but [name]Tilda[/name] is exotic and cool.

[name]Tallulah[/name], nn [name]Lilou[/name]: I picture an old, sweet, black Jamaican woman, because of the movie Cool Runnings in which one of the character’s says his mother’s name is [name]Tallulah[/name]. In my mind, it’s PERFECT for that character, but seems odd to me on a newborn Californian girl. [name]Lilou[/name] is sweet as a name on it’s own! You may also like [name]Lilo[/name] ([name]LEE[/name]-lo) or [name]Lorelai[/name] (nickname [name]Lolly[/name]?).

[name]Felicity[/name], nn [name]Izzy[/name]: I have loved this name ever since I beheld the beautiful redheaded American Girl character when I was a preteen. The vowel sounds in it, and even the specific consonants, make it sound so petite and soft and energetic and spunky all at once. I prefer the nickname [name]Lissie[/name].

[name]Pepper[/name]: I’ll disagree with previous posters. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Pepper[/name]! My mom had a [name]Little[/name] [name]Golden[/name] Book from when she was little (1950s) about a girl named [name]Pepper[/name] who pretends to be a veterinarian. I think it would be such a cool name, and because of that book and the orphan in [name]Annie[/name], it just seems vintage to me.

[name]Pippa[/name]: Too connected to the royals for my taste. Not that I have any problem with connections to the royals, but this particular name was mentioned in the news so much around the time of [name]Kate[/name]'s wedding, so it just feels trendy and blah to me now. You may like Peppin.

[name]Ripley[/name]: Cute idea, but I don’t like the [name]Rip[/name]- opening. It just makes me think of crude phrases about passing gas.

[name]September[/name]: To me, this is too much of a word to ever feel like a name. I would be afraid that when people hear it, they only ever think of the month, and I would want people to think of the [name]BABY[/name] upon hearing her name, not a month. Typically I love word names, but some of the month names are just too monthy for me.

[name]Imogen[/name], nn [name]Immy[/name]: [name]Imogen[/name] has always felt choppy and awkward to me. While some names come out sounding musical and are fun to say, [name]Imogen[/name] just sounds like harsh sounds blurted out. I like [name]Immy[/name] though.

[name]Cecily[/name]: Cute, but pretty close to the popular [name]Cecilia[/name], and popularity makes me dislike a name as it no longer feels fresh and original. You may like [name]Thessaly[/name]?

[name]Jubilee[/name]: This sounds happy! It also sounds kind of chubby…but this is one of those names that DOES come out sounding kind of musical.

[name]Petra[/name]: This one sounds kind of ancient to me, and I can’t picture it on a child, but I’m sure it would grow on me once I saw her.

[name]Verity[/name]: I’ve really liked [name]Verity[/name] lately as a middle name (I like the combo [name]Cambria[/name] [name]Verity[/name]–feel free to steal it if you happen to like it as much as I do!). As a first name [name]Verity[/name] feels like a Pilgrim who just walked off the boat. Not a bad thing, but if that’s the image I was going for, I’d choose the name [name]Remember[/name] (nickname Mem) instead. You may also like [name]Amity[/name].

[name]Ottilie[/name]: This one could really grow on me the more I think about it. My first thought is “otter,” but there’s nothing wrong with that; all names sound like SOMETHING, and otters are cute. I think [name]Ottilie[/name] would be really sweet on a little girl…and a teen…and a woman.

Girls middle names I love:
[name]Primrose[/name]: Too much pop culture connection for my taste. Everybody would know where you got it from. (Or ASSUME where you got it from.)

[name]Waverley[/name]: Again, very tied to pop culture in a show I have never seen, Wizards of [name]Waverly[/name] Place. But it is a really cute sound.

[name]Whimsy[/name]: Fun! But remember, middle names are only used in the most formal occasions, like graduations and weddings. Would [name]Whimsy[/name] seem out of place at such an event?

[name]Mazarine[/name]: Ahh…why is this tucked away in the middle name slot?? [name]Mazarine[/name] is SO beautiful! I love the pronunciation mazz-uh-REEN (like “magazine”) and my husband likes MAZ-uh-rin (like “[name]Madelyn[/name]”). [name]Both[/name] are correct, as you may know. [name]Mazarine[/name] looks amazing written out, and sounds like a perfect name that should be popular but is being kept secret.

Darling: Despite what I said earlier about middle names needing to feel appropriate on formal occasions, I have always loved the idea of Darling as a middle name, from my love of [name]Peter[/name] [name]Pan[/name] where the children’s adorable last name is Darling.

[name]Sunshine[/name]: Very hippie. But that’s not a bad thing. The right person could pull this off. Very free-spirited.

Boys:
[name]Asa[/name]: This one has crept to our top five as well. I love how short and simple it is, while having such a regal Biblical history.

[name]Finnley[/name]: This seems really trendy to me, and when I see it, I don’t think of the awesome name, I just think, “Oh, another [name]Finn[/name]- name.”)

[name]Arlo[/name]: [name]Milo[/name], [name]Harlow[/name], [name]Arlo[/name]…these names seem a bit trendy too, but not as bad as [name]Finnley[/name]-type names (though I haven’t checked the statistics on any of them; I’m just guessing by what I see and hear). I like the O-ending boy’s names, and hope they don’t become too common. My current favorite is [name]Thurlow[/name], a name I found in an [name]Abraham[/name] [name]Lincoln[/name] biography that you may like.

[name]Tennyson[/name]: I don’t know if I like this as a first name. It feels like too much of a last name, and a bit TOO tied to the poet to ever feel like it belongs to a child.

[name]Cormac[/name]: Reminds me of poison sumac. You may like [name]Conrad[/name]?

[name]Dex[/name] or [name]Dax[/name]: I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]DEX[/name]!!! I have it on my list too. [name]Love[/name] it! SO simply and fun and great for a baby/boy/man of any age. You may also like [name]Jeb[/name], another much softer favorite of mine.

[name]Kieran[/name], nn [name]Kier[/name]: I think all the Ke- names are fun and perfect for little boys. [name]Keifer[/name], [name]Keegan[/name], [name]Keenan[/name], etc.

[name]Orrin[/name]: This could definitely grow on me. I like O’s and R’s in boys’ names–they feel very little boyish. You may also like [name]Olin[/name] or (totally unrelated but it has an O and R) [name]Crosby[/name].

[name]Flynn[/name]: Hm. Not loving it. When I look at it I see [name]Flem[/name], [name]Floyd[/name], and [name]Lynn[/name], none of which are very charming for a little boy. Maybe you would like [name]Flint[/name], [name]Foster[/name], or [name]Forrest[/name]?

[name]Kellen[/name]: This is different! If I could get past the [name]Kelly[/name] and [name]Helen[/name] sounds, it could really grow on me. I think a boy could wear it well.

[name]Wilder[/name]: This is on my list too! I love it not just because of its cowboyish sound, but because of its [name]Little[/name] House on the [name]Prairie[/name] connection. I think it is a very boyish name that grows into a very manly name. Nice choice.

[name]Matilda[/name] - very sweet, Matild by [name]Roald[/name] Dahl is one of my favourite children’s books.
[name]Tallulah[/name] - [name]Tallulah[/name] [name]Tallulah[/name]. I think it’s pretty.
[name]Felicity[/name] - I love [name]Felicity[/name], it’s a gorgeous name. Very calm and soothing.
[name]Pepper[/name] - Dislike. Sounds like a dog.
[name]Pippa[/name] - I strongly dislike [name]Pippa[/name]. Because of that horrid horrid girl.
[name]Ripley[/name] - Oh please no. Not on a girl. Not on a boy either, but not on a girl.
[name]September[/name] - Anything special about that month to you? I’d stick it in the middle if I’d use it at all.
[name]Imogen[/name] - Stunning. [name]Love[/name] me some [name]Imogen[/name].
[name]Cecily[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this too, although I’m in the minority of prefering [name]Cicely[/name].
[name]Jubilee[/name] - Cute, very cute.
[name]Petra[/name] - Beautiful. [name]Lovely[/name] name, splendid city.
[name]Verity[/name] - I don’t like this, it’s not a nice sounding word.
[name]Ottilie[/name] - I don’t like commenting on my own name. Seems selfish. I love my name though.

Girls middle names I love:
[name]Primrose[/name] - Boring, but it’s a pretty flower. I prefer simple [name]Rose[/name].
[name]Waverley[/name] - Gorgeous name. I really really like it.
[name]Whimsy[/name] - No no no. You don’t want to call your daughter whimsy.
[name]Mazarine[/name] - Yeah, a blue colour. It’s a pretty word. I prefer [name]Marceline[/name].
Darling - No no no again. Unless you want a pink princess beauty queen, or a sweet little dog.
[name]Sunshine[/name] - Over the top. [name]Soleil[/name], Solvei, Tesni, Sunniva, Arevik, [name]Sol[/name] are lovely names with sun meanings.

Boys:
[name]Asa[/name] - pronounced AY-suh. Beautiful little name.
[name]Finnley[/name] - I prefer [name]Finn[/name], or [name]Finley[/name].
[name]Arlo[/name] - Nice name, has the lovely -o ending.
[name]Tennyson[/name] - I like this. I’d expect the parents to be huge [name]Alfred[/name], [name]Lord[/name] [name]Tennyson[/name] fans though.
[name]Cormac[/name] - Sounds weird.
[name]Dex[/name] or [name]Dax[/name] - Dog name.
[name]Kieran[/name], nn [name]Kier[/name] - Yeah I like this. Prefer [name]Ciar[/name]án.
[name]Orrin[/name] - Cute.
[name]Flynn[/name] - Reminds me of phlegm.
[name]Kellen[/name] - Eh, no I don’t like it.
[name]Wilder[/name] - Cool name. Used to be on my list.

Girls:
[name]Matilda[/name], nn [name]Tilly[/name] or [name]Tilda[/name] - My favorite on your list. I prefer [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Jane[/name] or [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Violet[/name].
[name]Tallulah[/name] - Not my style
[name]Felicity[/name] - Very nice!
[name]Pepper[/name] - When I was younger, I once thought this was the best name idea in the world, but I think it is best for a pet.
[name]Pippa[/name] - Not my style
[name]Ripley[/name] - No
[name]September[/name] - No
[name]Imogen[/name] - Not my style
[name]Cecily[/name] - Much prefer [name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Jubilee[/name] - Not terrible, but I’d only consider it for a middle name.
[name]Petra[/name] - Very nice!!
[name]Verity[/name] - Not my style
[name]Ottilie[/name] - Ok

Girls middle names:
[name]Primrose[/name] - Nice
[name]Waverley[/name] - Not my style. I guess it’s ok in the middle. I’d spell it [name]Waverly[/name].
[name]Whimsy[/name] - No. I think it’s too out there, and risks making the name seem like a joke.
[name]Mazarine[/name] - Not my style. I agree that it has a pretty sound, but I think of Margarine (or Mazola corn oil) when I see the name.
Darling - No. It’s not dignified and strikes me in a similar way as ‘[name]Princess[/name]’ or ‘[name]Precious[/name].’
[name]Sunshine[/name] - Better than [name]Whimsy[/name] or Darling, but too informal for my taste as part of someone’s lifelong name.

Boys:
[name]Asa[/name] - Not terrible, but not my style.
[name]Finnley[/name] - I like it, but prefer [name]Finn[/name] or [name]Finley[/name].
[name]Arlo[/name] - Not my style, but nothing wrong with it.
[name]Tennyson[/name] - No, not with a surname ending with “sen” or “son.”
[name]Cormac[/name] - Not my style
[name]Dex[/name] or [name]Dax[/name] - [name]Way[/name] too informal to the point seeming flippant. As nicknames, they’d be okay.
[name]Kieran[/name], nn [name]Kier[/name] - Not my style… not very masculine to my ears.
[name]Orrin[/name] - Ok
[name]Flynn[/name] - Ok
[name]Kellen[/name] - No. Sounds a little like ‘killing’ or 'kill ‘em.’
[name]Wilder[/name] - I think it would invite lifelong comments and teasing. Much better as a middle name.

You have some pretty great names in the mix here (as well as some I’m not too fond of). I personally think that if your LN ends in ‘son’, I’d stay away from any FN that end in ‘son’ or ‘sen’, but anything else I think would be okay for the most part.

Girls:
[name]Matilda[/name]- This is a nice name. It has a classic kind of feel to it, has been around for many generations but doesn’t feel overly old or anything. It feels antique but in a good way.
[name]Violet[/name]- This is an okay name, I’m not as much a fan of color names for FN, I’d prefer it to a MN. Though I kind of do like the name [name]Lilac[/name] (probably because it’s my niece’s name)
[name]Tallulah[/name]- I’m not such a fan of this name. It feels strange, and a little bit like what a small child might use as a replacement for a naughty word.
[name]Felicity[/name]- I like this name quite a lot. It sounds like someone who is strong and independent to me.
[name]Pepper[/name]- Not a fan. Could be a decent MN, but for a FN seems strange to me. Like naming a kid Salt.
[name]Pippa[/name]- Also not a fan of this one. It sounds more like a nickname. Feels to childish to be worn by an adult.
[name]Ripley[/name]- This seems like a boys name to me. And beyond that I just don’t like it. Reminds me of farting (‘let one rip’) or of [name]Ripley[/name]'s Believe it or Not.
[name]September[/name]- Again not a fan. [name]June[/name] or [name]August[/name] or [name]May[/name] or [name]April[/name] (and maybe even [name]January[/name] or [name]July[/name]) seem like names, but [name]September[/name] doesn’t have a ‘name’ feel to me.
[name]Imogen[/name]- This name has grown on me quite a bit. It feels somewhat exotic, but has a down to earth quality to it.
[name]Cecily[/name]- I like this, but I think I prefer [name]Felicity[/name] (which has a similar feel/sound) to this one.
[name]Jubilee[/name]- Not bad. It’s certainly a happy name. I think it could be a name that would grow on me (I also kind of like the name [name]Jubal[/name] for a boy)
[name]Petra[/name]- Very nice name. It sounds like the name of someone creative and worldly.
[name]Verity[/name]- I think this could make a pretty great MN, but as a FN I think it’s just has too much of a ‘word name’ feel.
[name]Ottilie[/name] - I like it quite a lot. Again sounds like someone with a wide world view. It also has a familiar sound quality to it (due to it being somewhat similar sounding to [name]Natalie[/name]).

Boys:
[name]Asa[/name]- I used to not like this name, but now I really like it a lot (another cool option is [name]Aza[/name]- an Arabic name that means ‘comfort’- though I think [name]Aza[/name] might be a female name)
[name]Finnley[/name]- I like this name a lot (but like [name]Finian[/name] and especially [name]Phineas[/name] even more)
[name]Arlo[/name]- It’s okay. I have no strong feelings either way.
[name]Tennyson[/name]- Feels too last namey to me, and with you last name ending in ‘son’ I don’t think it’d work.
[name]Cormac[/name]- Cool name (as are [name]Corbin[/name] and [name]Corwin[/name]).
[name]Dex[/name] or [name]Dax[/name]- These both feel distinctly like nicknames, and I don’t think they’d work well on an adult. [name]Dexter[/name] would be a good name though (if it weren’t for the seriel killer TV show)
[name]Kieran[/name]- Very good name, but I like [name]Kiernan[/name] even better. [name]Kiernan[/name] feels stronger and more masculine.
[name]Orrin[/name]- Also really like this name a lot. If it wasn’t for the fact that I’m from Oregon and it sounds too similar to that for my personal usage, it’d be somewhere on my short-ish list.
[name]Flynn[/name]- Another one I really like a lot (though I think once again I prefer [name]Phineas[/name] and [name]Finian[/name])
[name]Kellen[/name]- I like this name, but for me it’s a bit too feminine. Plus I prefer [name]Kieran[/name] and [name]Kiernan[/name] over this one (which have a similar feel/sound to it)
[name]Wilder[/name]- I think this could be a really cool MN, but sounds too much like a grammar mistake (someone is describing someone/something that is ‘more wild’ than someone/something else) to be usable as a FN.

[name]Matilda[/name], [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Pippa[/name], [name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Ottilie[/name] are all gorgeous, most are on my girls list too. [name]Pippa[/name] is one I wouldn’t use any time soon just because the association with [name]Pippa[/name] Middleton is very high at the moment. [name]Tallulah[/name], [name]Verity[/name] and [name]Cecily[/name] are all really pretty too.

[name]Pepper[/name] is too teaseworthy in my opinion, can you imagine the jokes of “Hey [name]Pepper[/name], where’s the salt?” [name]Ripley[/name] just doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of your list because it’s very masculine. Jubiliee and [name]Petra[/name] aren’t my style at all. [name]September[/name] is very odd to me, I’m partial to [name]August[/name] as a name but not many other months.

In terms of combo’s, I’d love to see…
[name]Matilda[/name] [name]Valentine[/name]
[name]Tallulah[/name] [name]Primrose[/name]
[name]Felicity[/name] [name]Primrose[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name] [name]Verity[/name]
[name]Ottilie[/name] [name]Primrose[/name]

We had a very similar style for girl’s but not so much with the boy’s names! I adore [name]Asa[/name] and [name]Finlay[/name] (this sp.), while [name]Arlo[/name] is very handsome.

[name]Tennyson[/name] isn’t at all popular but it fits the current trends and I just think it’s too much name. It doesn’t have any nice nickname options either and as a teacher I really couldn’t imagine shouting “[name]Tennyson[/name]” across the playground. [name]Kieran[/name] is pretty dated in the UK, [name]Flynn[/name] is uber trendy and [name]Dex[/name]/[name]Dax[/name] seems very trendy/modern. [name]Wilder[/name] appears popular on here, but I just think of the film [name]Van[/name] [name]Wilder[/name]. I don’t like the sounds in [name]Cormac[/name], while [name]Kellen[/name]/[name]Orrin[/name] don’t do anything for me.

Hello All!

Well, what a wonderful response! I so appreciate all you chiming in with your thoughts and opinions! Sometimes it’s nice to have a complete stranger weigh in on my choices and not just friends and family. I love all the input! It’s interesting to see how a name strikes certain people and conjures up images I’d never even considered.

It seems that [name]Matilda[/name] is an overall winner, and I’m so glad! There is a reason it is at the very top of my list - I’m so in love with it! My infatuation with this name started with the [name]Roald[/name] Dahl story by the same name. And now I love it for many other reasons: that it sounds antique without sounding stuffy, kind of book-ish, sweet but a little spunky and for its excellent nn qualities. This one will remain at the top of my list.

I’ve come to the conclusion that [name]Pippa[/name], [name]September[/name] and [name]Ripley[/name] are probably ‘guilty pleasure’ name that I would not actually use on my child. I still have a love for them though…

I know [name]Pepper[/name] received an overwhelming negative response, but I still really love this name. I know it makes people think of salt, or chili peppers or just another ‘word’ name, but I think if I ever met a really cute little girl with spunky attitude that I would think its the greatest name in the world! But I understand that it has the potential to be a difficult name to wear. I’ll put it on the back burner…

[name]Tallulah[/name] is still a strong contender for me. I love the galloping sound it makes when you say it (like of like [name]Penelope[/name], which I don’t like nearly as much) and it just makes me happy. But because it is kind of a mouthful, I could see people always using a nn ([name]Lulah[/name] or [name]Lilou[/name]) instead of the full name. My mom said it reminded her of a elderly black woman from the South (in a very wise and matronly way). But again, if I met a cute little blonde girl (which our children are certain to be) with this name, I would think it’s adorable.

[name]Felicity[/name], [name]Imogen[/name], [name]Petra[/name] and all very pretty in my opinion, but I don’t know if they will surpass [name]Matilda[/name] for the top spot.

[name]Ottilie[/name] is another favorite (which was my childhood friend [name]Gretchen[/name]'s middle name and the first I had heard it) and I like it pronounced oh-[name]TILL[/name]-ia (kinda of like [name]Natalia[/name]??). Is that the way it is most commonly pronounced???

For the middle names, I’m definitely open to something a little more ‘out there’ than anything I would use for a first name (hence [name]Primrose[/name] and [name]Sunshine[/name]) but I do still want it to “make sense” and sound beautiful. [name]One[/name] commenter made a good point about the middle names being read at official ceremonies such as a graduation and that would make [name]Whimsy[/name] just sound silly. But I do like the occasional ‘word’ name and [name]Whimsy[/name] just makes me happy. I might have to count that one out though…

And for the boys, I really LIKE all those names I listed, but I don’t know if I [name]LOVE[/name] any of them. I’m having such a hard time with the boy names. I would really love to have a little boy, but I really want to NAME a little girl!

[name]Asa[/name] is still probably my top pick, because of its simplicity and lack of popularity. I like that it is different from most boy names in that it ends with an ‘a.’ If I had it my way, I would probably pick a more unisex name for my son like [name]Shannon[/name], [name]Ashley[/name] or [name]Kelly[/name] (not those specifically but something in that category) but my husband doesn’t really like that idea. He’s very open-minded when it comes to the names I throw out (even [name]Pepper[/name]!) so when he says he doesn’t like something, I usually try to respect that.

[name]Cormac[/name] received mixed reviews but I still kind of like this one. Again, I like the not-so-typical ending and I like how it sounds with our last name. I’m going to have to mull this one over a little more.

[name]Tennyson[/name] is another guilty pleasure name, because of the name itself and because of how it would sound with our last name. But a girl can dream…

[name]Kieran[/name] and [name]Kellen[/name] and still favs - I think because they are a little less masculine than some of the others on my list. I don’t usually go for overly masculine names.

I like [name]Wilder[/name], but I might save that for a middle name spot. It’s a little ‘surname-y,’ but I like it nonetheless.

Anyway, thanks again everyone for all the input - much appreciated! I’m still open to boy name suggestions, as I feel I still have a long way to go!

Thanks again!

I love [name]Tallulah[/name] and am too timid to use it myself!

Havent read any responses (because it’s more fun for me to not be influenced by other replies first!). I am not much help for you because I really like a lot of them, sorry! LOL

anyway here goes:

Girls:
[name]Matilda[/name], nn*[name]Tilly[/name]or[name]Tilda[/name](middle name possibilities are[name]Jane[/name],[name]Violet[/name],[name]Valentine[/name]…?) [name]Love[/name] matilda, and the nn options given. I think matilda valentine might be a little long, but the other two I like. I think matilda jane has a really spunky vibe that I like, but violet gives a similar feel too.
[name]Tallulah[/name], nn*[name]Lilou[/name]([name]May[/name], which is part of my maiden name)- I like tallulah and think it’s a cute name (it’s on my long list) but wonder about how well it ages. I’ve thought [name]Lula[/name] would be a nn I’d use for that name. MN choice is lovely.
[name]Felicity[/name], nn
[name]Izzy[/name]- very cute, though I like the feeling/sound the full name has more than the nn.
[name]Pepper[/name]- too over the top in my opinion. While a cute, unexpected toddler’s name, it isn’t a grown woman’s name. Maybe as a nickname they can grow out of later?
[name]Pippa[/name](possibility of becoming too popular???)- I prefer pippa to be short for a more formal name, also for the growing up reason. They’re only children for a short portion of their lives, I’d want to give them a more adult-sounding option, too.
[name]Ripley[/name]- meh… [name]Kinda[/name] like the sound of it, with the -ley ending and I like r names on girls, but I can’t shake the ‘believe it or not’ association
[name]September[/name]- lovely unexpected month name, not used to it being a name though. I’d have to think about it some more but I can see myself liking it. [name]Timber[/name] is a cute nn.
[name]Imogen[/name], nn*[name]Immy[/name](sounds like[name]Emmy[/name])- I’m not wild about the name like many people are here, but I think it’s a good option for unexpected, spunky, without being patronizing and childish. [name]Imogen[/name] ages very well in my opinion
[name]Cecily[/name]- it’s ok, but not a name that jumps out at me.
[name]Jubilee[/name]- maybe as a nn, but a bit childish for me
[name]Petra[/name]- I think this is a great throwback name. I haven’t met one but I do know a [name]Peta[/name] from Australia and I like that sound
[name]Verity[/name]- a name that I come back to every once in a while. I love the V and ‘y’ ending, but it kind of makes me think ‘veiny’
[name]Ottilie[/name]- I really like this name, but I have a weird accent apparently (not southern (us), not quite, I donno what it is) and I have to try really hard for it to sound soft and feminine and not just like ‘oddly’

Girls middle names I love:
[name]Primrose[/name]- lovely mn
[name]Waverley[/name]- this is on my medium-list for fn’s, but boyfriend thinks it’s a bit too woo-woo (loopy, hippie dippy). I think its romantic!
[name]Whimsy[/name]- nice middle name option, W is another initial I like, like V and R
[name]Mazarine[/name]- it’s ok, depending on the fn choice I’d say.
Darling*- too cutesy
[name]Sunshine[/name]- too cutesy

Boys:
[name]Asa[/name]- very nice, strong but not harsh man’s name. ‘ace’ could be an adorable nn for a little kid.
[name]Finnley[/name](possibly too popular??? I only know one little boy with this name but it seems to be everywhere on this site!)- everywhere on this site, not sure about the real world though! I love [name]Finnley[/name]… Might prefer [name]Finley[/name] spelling though.
[name]Arlo[/name]- have been thinking of this name as well! Gives a similar feeling to me of [name]Oliver[/name] and [name]Arthur[/name] without being too popular or stuffy, though [name]Arthur[/name] is a very cute name that I could imagine using.
[name]Tennyson[/name]- a bit pretentious sounding imo, but Ten is a cool nn. Im not wild about -son names without a person having a male ancestor/relative with the root name in their family tree.
[name]Cormac[/name]- very nice name, love the irish/welsh/scottish names like that. [name]Mac[/name] is a great nn!
[name]Dex[/name]or[name]Dax[/name]- Prefer a longer name to go with it, like [name]Dexter[/name] or [name]Declan[/name] for [name]Dex[/name], not sure of [name]Dax[/name] options.
[name]Kieran[/name], nn
[name]Kier[/name]- another nice irishy sounding name (they have a great balance of sounding poetic and not harsh!) Naturally I wanted to make [name]Kier[/name] into ‘kiers’ like piers, and I like that sound.
[name]Orrin[/name]- it’s ok, doesn’t do much for me like the others
[name]Flynn[/name]- probably prefer flynn to [name]Finley[/name]. Very sweet, but also attractive name and ages well.
[name]Kellen[/name]- Like this one very much! But since I nn everything, Kells sounds a bit like Kills for my taste.
[name]Wilder[/name]- it’s too much of a surname in my mind, but I think it’d be a nice choice for someone who has that name in their family tree. I have some cousins with that name and think the girls should totally use it as a boy’s name or middle for either.

I only did the first names.

[name]Matilda[/name], nn [name]Tilly[/name] or [name]Tilda[/name] - This is a good, solid name. It’s not at all tacky. I like [name]Tilly[/name] as a nn.

[name]Tallulah[/name], nn [name]Lilou[/name] ([name]May[/name], which is part of my maiden name) - Another one I love. It’s clunky but cute.

[name]Felicity[/name], nn [name]Izzy[/name] - I like it.

[name]Pepper[/name] - I love it. No really, I love it. I’ve been on the fence about this one a lot, but I’ve slipped into the “totally dig it” side of things. Maybe it would be good to give her a full name and use it as a nn. But I think the right girl could pull off [name]Pepper[/name] as a full name.

[name]Pippa[/name] - I’m sure it’ll become more popular, but I think it’s a safe choice right now. This could always be a full name for [name]Pepper[/name] if you wanted to give her something more formal.

[name]Ripley[/name] - I like it in theory. I think of [name]Ellen[/name] [name]Ripley[/name] and badassary and strong women. But I think it might be better served as a middle name.

[name]September[/name] - I don’t mind it. [name]Ember[/name] could be a cute nn.

[name]Imogen[/name], nn [name]Immy[/name] (sounds like [name]Emmy[/name]) - I don’t love it, I don’t hate it. I’ve never really taken to this name, despite the fact that I hear about it on here all the time.

[name]Cecily[/name] - Eh. It’s okay.

[name]Jubilee[/name] - It’s okay. It might be a little much. There’s a [name]Marvel[/name] character from the 90s called [name]Jubilee[/name], and I think of her when I hear this name. Her name was actually Jubilation [name]Lee[/name] in the comics.

[name]Petra[/name] - My first association is the [name]Christian[/name] rock band [name]Petra[/name]. I actually like the name a lot.

[name]Verity[/name] - I like this one. [name]Vera[/name] could be a nn.

[name]Ottilie[/name] - I like this one a lot, too. It feels like a good balance of playful and real-world-possibilities.

[name]Asa[/name] - I like the name, but it feels a little incomplete.

[name]Finnley[/name] (possibly too popular??? I only know one little boy with this name but it seems to be everywhere on this site!) - I would suggest [name]Phineas[/name] nn [name]Finn[/name] instead. [name]Finnley[/name] feels so trendy.

[name]Arlo[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this one. Comfortable, relaxed, and not overused.

[name]Tennyson[/name] - I like it in theory, but if you have a “son” ending surname, it might be best cut from the list.

[name]Cormac[/name] - This is a handsome name. Familiar but not overused.

[name]Dex[/name] or [name]Dax[/name] - I like both. They would definitely need longer middles to anchor them.

[name]Kieran[/name], nn [name]Kier[/name] - It’s a fine name, but it’s not my style. I don’t know what it is about it that doesn’t ping with me.

[name]Orrin[/name] - I like this.

[name]Flynn[/name] - [name]Love[/name]. Dashing and clean.

[name]Kellen[/name] - Not a fan. Maybe I just don’t like K names.

[name]Wilder[/name] - [name]Love[/name]. This is like at number 11 on my list. It feels relaxed and friendly.

Your style isn’t bad. I like a lot of your names!

My favorites.
