I notice that many names which give me a feeling of contentment and rightness are called by nameberry “pleasant”.
The older I get, the less I value drama and the more I value pleasantness.
[name_f]Pleasant[/name_f] activities like reading, gardening, walking, birdwatching.
[name_f]Pleasant[/name_f] books and movies and foods.
And pleasant names.
For me what makes a name pleasant is hard to pinpoint, but I have noticed 5 traits they often share:
no or low drama
a feeling of reasonableness
a calm quality
spelled right, for the right gender (not [name_u]Stanley[/name_u] for a girl, say, or worse, Stanleigh)
*a je ne sais quoi, maybe pretty rather than beautiful
A [name_f]Laura[/name_f] Linney of names rather than a [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_u]Loren[/name_u] of names…
Does anyone else out there particularly enjoy pleasant names and if so, what are your Top Ten of the Moment?
Here are mine:
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Shirley[/name_f]
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f]
[name_u]Leslie[/name_u] (is it OK to like your own name?)
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Polly[/name_f]
[name_f]Nancy[/name_f]
[name_f]Bess[/name_f]
[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f]
Oops, I forgot [name_u]Comfort[/name_u], [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], [name_f]Afternoon[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], and even the word [name_f]Pleasant[/name_f]!
Off the top of my head, these names have a definite feeling of no-fuss ‘‘rightness’’…
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Garland[/name_f]
[name_f]Maren[/name_f] (edit: oh, and [name_f]Mara[/name_f])
[name_f]Tara[/name_f]
[name_f]Betsan[/name_f]
[name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Kirsty[/name_f]
[name_u]Penrose[/name_u] and [name_f]Posy[/name_f]
[name_f]Martha[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalba[/name_f]
[name_f]Susie[/name_f]
Eirys (the Welsh word is so much more appealing to me that [name_f]Iris[/name_f])
[name_f]Valerie[/name_f]
Loveday
Pretty straightforward, simple, not too of-the-moment but not making a point of being retro. [name_m]Just[/name_m] gentle names you never really have to explain. Nothing that requires a whole story. Nothing too word-name, not even the most classic florals, because to me flower names are a little bit of a statement. A couple are Biblical, a couple more are variants of Biblical, but none are heavy or clunky.
And, looking over my list after I made it, most are neither aggressively short nor really long.
If I add in the calmest of my favourite word names I can also see fitting in with these:
[name_f]Faith[/name_f]
[name_f]Lily[/name_f] & [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Holly[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f] - but some think this clunks
[name_f]May[/name_f]
I think it’s a sign of healthy self-worth to like your own name.
I also find [name_u]June[/name_u] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] to have very pleasant auras.
Mine at the moment:
[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] …which apparently means one who brings happiness or blesses others
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_u]June[/name_u]
[name_f]Geneva[/name_f] ( in relation to a juniper tree )
[name_f]Naomi[/name_f] …my book’s meaning is “one who is pleasant” I was looking up the meaning out of curiosity, bc I didn’t know its meaning
[name_f]Nova[/name_f] ( bright star/ chasing butterflies )
[name_f]Tess[/name_f]
[name_u]Joyce[/name_u]
[name_f]Unity[/name_f]
[name_f]Amity[/name_f]
[name_f]Verity[/name_f]
[name_f]Faye[/name_f] ( faeries )
[name_u]Shae[/name_u] ( gift )
