I’m working on a novel that’s like spy-sci-fi-action-adventure. One of the characters begins as the protagonist’s best friend before turning evil and then slowly learning to turn good again with help from the protagonist. [This character]'s role in the story is originally just sidekick/comedy relief before becoming an essential part of the protagonist’s journey and his closest confidant. Then, because of something that wasn’t his fault, [the character] becomes evil and tries to kill the protagonist. Despite this, the protagonist manages to bring [the character] back to the good side, after which [the character] struggles with guilt and regret at the crimes he had committed. Unable to deal with the weight of the guilt, [the character] asks the spy agency to remove his memory and give him false ones.
The story ends with the protagonist learning that he is to embark on a new mission for which the presence of [the character] is vital. So the protagonist writes [the character] a lengthy letter, which in essence is the novel itself.
With all of this in mind, what should I name the character? I’ve toyed with [name_m]Rufus[/name_m], [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], and [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], but none of those seem to strike the right chords with me.
