Please help me with Pronunciation

Hello !!

So I love the name [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and the spelling of it as [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].

But I want to say it as Mad-uh-LYN.

I also like Mad-uh-LINE but my partner prefers the LYN ending which I like too. But I want to spell it as [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].

I have read a lot on the name and it seems to me people say it both ways but I wanted to see what more people on nameberry thought.

Thank you !:two_hearts:

[name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]/Madilynn/etc are pretty common so most people would assume she was Mad-uh-[name_u]Lyn[/name_u].

I think spelling it like [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] would be fine with that pronunciation!

I would spell [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] that way (-lyn).

A lot of people spell it [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], but say mad-uh-lyn. I will say that is one of my personal pet peeves, though.

I know a [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] who pronounces it with the -lyn sound at the end! I think it’s definitely doable!

I think that would work!

Hmm it’s possible that, whatever you decide now, may not stick when you actually meet her. Perhaps let her “decide” you know?

In the area in which im in, i.e UK/Ire i’d say the majority would pronounce it Mad- UH- LYN as in [name_u]Lynn[/name_u]/Lynne although i must say i actually prefer the Mad- UH- LINE pronunciation akin to how its pronounced in the children’s film [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] 1998. It just sounds much more polished and refined and classy in my opinion!

So many Madelines use the - [name_u]Lyn[/name_u] ending so it definitely wouldn’t be a problem if that is your favourite spelling.

My sister’s middle name is [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], pronounced -lynn. I’ve never heard [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] pronounced -line (I live in the US) so I think you’re fine!

I would say line for [name_f]Madeline[/name_f].

As far as I can remember, every single person who I know named [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] pronounces it -lyn, actually.

If it’s spelled -line, it’ll be pronounced line until corrected. There are different spellings for a reason. Maybe spell it the [name_u]French[/name_u] way [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] so you get the -lyn/luhn sound.

I’m from the UK and I’ve never heard anyone pronounce [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] as mad-uh-LINE in real life, only on the internet. [name_f]Every[/name_f] [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] I know is mad-uh-LYNN. I don’t think you’d be regularly correcting people.

I’ve met several Madelines who pronounce it Mad-uh-lyn so i think you could use it

To get mad-uh-LYN, I would stick with the spelling Madelyn.

I’ve never heard [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] pronounced with the -line ending, however it’s spelled I’d always assume it ends with -lynn

Always Mad-uh-lyn for me, never heard any other way IRL xx

If I had a [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], I’d go for -LINE so the rhymes in Madeline would work. But all the Madelines I have known IRL have pronounced it “lyn” like you want.
