After much stressful deliberation, DH and I are almost settled on [name]Beatrice[/name] (or [name]Beatrix[/name]) for our baby girl due shortly.
We are using a family name for the middle, which will either be [name]Joy[/name], or a last name beginning with M or K. This would give her the initials of either BJA, BMA or BKA. [name]How[/name] bad is it for her first 2 initials to be BJ or BM?
Besides [name]Bea[/name], I would like to have one other reasonable nickname option. What do you think of [name]Bess[/name] for [name]Beatrice[/name] or Bex for [name]Beatrix[/name]? Suggestions welcome!
I don’t think most kids will even notice the initials. At the time I’ve worked at the daycare, I’ve worked with about 60 different kids just in the 5-12 age group, the ones most likely to notice initials, and only 2 out of all those even realized what their initials were. My husband has a niece whose 13 whose initials are BJ and she gets called BJ sometimes and no one in her age group seems to care.
As for nicknames, I [name]LOVE[/name] Bex for [name]Beatrix[/name]. i’ve never heard of it or thought of it but it’s great. i also love [name]Trixie[/name] for [name]Beatrix[/name]. As for [name]Beatrice[/name], i like – Are you pronouncing [name]Bea[/name] like bee-uh or bee? You could always try the other pronunciation of that. There’s also [name]Betsy[/name], [name]Tricia[/name], [name]Rissa[/name], [name]Beata[/name], [name]Beatie[/name], [name]Betty[/name]…
People ask about the initials BJ a lot, and maybe it’s not common in other places, but I have known at least 4 guys who have been called BJ all their lives. [name]One[/name] of them was [name]William[/name] [name]John[/name], and another one was [name]Benedict[/name] J___?. Anyway, they never had any problems, and especially for a litle girl named [name]Beatrice[/name]/[name]Beatrix[/name], I really don’t think you have anything to worry about.
I prefer [name]Beatrix[/name] over [name]Beatrice[/name], with [name]Trixie[/name] being the nn I like. I never thought of Bex before, but I like it!
I don’t think BJA or BMA would be a problem. I had a girlfriend growing up with the initials BMA – no problems. I prefer [name]Beatrix[/name], and I love [name]Bea[/name] (either pronunciation), [name]Trixie[/name] and Bex! Good luck!
Between [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name] I definitely prefer [name]Beatrix[/name] by a lot. I wouldn’t worry about the initials. Middle names are hardly ever used or brought up so it probably won’t be noticed much if at all. I love [name]Trixie[/name] as a nickname! I think [name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Joy[/name] nn [name]Trixie[/name] would be lovely
I really like [name]Beatrice[/name] (Spelled this way). [name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Joy[/name] (BJM) is great, I do not see any problem with that. As for NNs, I know two girls with this name and their NNs are [name]Betty[/name] & [name]Trish[/name]. [name]Trixie[/name] is also cute.
My Mom is called BJ by our family, and no negative connotation has ever come up. As for nns I like [name]Trixie[/name] for both. I never thought of [name]Bess[/name] or [name]Betsy[/name] before. Those are nice for either name. Bex sounds like Becks to me, which is a nn for [name]Rebecca[/name]. I love both [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Beatrix[/name]. Good luck!

I slightly prefer [name]Beatrice[/name], nn [name]Bea[/name] (pronounced bee-uh), but [name]Bess[/name] is also lovely [name]Beatrix[/name] is great as well, I love [name]Bix[/name]/Bixie more than Bex. Since I’m more into the unusual variants of names, Viatrix, [name]Beatriz[/name] or [name]Beata[/name] would be my favourites.
Thank you everyone for your opinions!!! I have so many great nicknames to think about now! I really love all the suggestions, even [name]Trixie[/name] is growing on me (initially I was not into it which is part of the reason I had a concern about finding alternative nicknames).
And I’m sorry for being confusing as far as initials: our last name begins with A, and the first initial would be B for [name]Beatrice[/name]/[name]Beatrix[/name], so it is only a matter of whether it is weird to have the first and middle initials be BJ or BM which would be BJA or BMA when written out in full. I love [name]Beatrice[/name]/[name]Beatrix[/name] [name]Joy[/name] the best, but I am still wondering whether it would be safer to just use the other family name in the middle that begins with K (making her BKA).
