Please help with pronunciation and opinions on this name!

[name]Hi[/name] there my fellow berries! I need your honest opinions on this name that I just came across. The name is - [name]Clarice[/name]. What do you all think? Can someone please help me with the pronunciation? I’m thinking it’s something like claire-EES? [name]Do[/name] you know anything about this name? I don’t think I’ve ever heard it before. I was thinking it’s kind of cute, and had the option of the cute nn [name]Claire[/name] or [name]Reece[/name] (if pronounced the way I’m thinking it is).
Please tell me what you think!

P.S. While I’m getting opionions - what do you think of [name]Anneliese[/name]? And what do you think is the best spelling?

I liked the name [name]Clarice[/name] as well until my husband pointed out that it was [name]Jodie[/name] [name]Foster[/name]'s character in The [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs. She was a good character but I didn’t like the association with the movie.

I know a woman with this name, she pronounces [name]Claire[/name]-eece, I have bad association with it because of her, but it really is a lovely name and deserves a little more use

I pronounce it CLUH-reese. I heavily associate it with [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs so I could never personally use it.

I love [name]Anneliese[/name]. The [name]Annalise[/name] spelling is the most intuitive, but I think [name]Anneliese[/name] looks prettier

I too associate [name]Clarice[/name] with the [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs (and it always gives me chills!). You’re pronunciation is right. I love [name]Anneliese[/name], spelled that way or [name]Annelise[/name].

Thanks for the help with the pronunciation, and thanks for sharing your thoughts everyone! Several of you mentioned that [name]Clarice[/name] is a character in a movie. I don’t watch many movies, and have never seen the one you all have mentioned. Is this name something everyone would associate with the movie? [name]Even[/name] though I don’t think of the movie when I hear the name, I also don’t really want a name that EVERYONE associates with some movie that I have never even seen. Hmmm…
Any other thoughts???

I pronounce it cla-reese, and I haven’t seen the movie so I don’t have that association. It’s a pretty name, but I much prefer [name]Claire[/name] and [name]Clara[/name]. [name]Anneliese[/name] is lovely, and this spelling is the best, in my opinion, since it’s the original.

Yes, I think when many people hear that name they will think of [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs and hear [name]Hannibal[/name] Lecter saying “Hello, [name]Clarice[/name]” in that really creepy way. The movie is a classic, so not one that people will forget about in a few years. Sorry :\ Maybe you could use [name]Claire[/name] [name]Reese[/name] for first and middle names?

I agree with the last poster that it is a name MANY will associate with The [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs. That eerie “Hello, [name]Clarice[/name]” is all I can think of when I see or hear the name. And I pronounce the name like you do.

~[name]Frances[/name]

[name]Hannibal[/name] Lecter was a cannibalistic serial killer and [name]Clarice[/name] [name]Starling[/name] was an FBI agent who becomes his lover. Creeeeepy movie.

that’s the trailer for [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs. I can’t believe you’ve never heard of it! It came out around 1992? With [name]Jodie[/name] [name]Foster[/name] ([name]Clarice[/name]) and [name]Anthony[/name] Hopkins? The famous line “A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti.” Really???

The movie itself is creepy and incredibly famous (one of the few movies to ever sweep the Oscars) so I wouldn’t recommend using it. Unless you don’t mind having people say “helloooo [name]Clarice[/name]” like [name]Hannibal[/name] every time they meet her.

[name]Anneliese[/name] on the other hand is very cute! If you’re picking between them I’d recommend [name]Anneliese[/name].

Wait… what? He helps her catch Buffalo [name]Bill[/name] but … when are they lovers? I mean, he comes on to her a couple times to freak her out, but I don’t think they’re ever lovers.

Not in that movie but eventually that is what happens. I looked it up online. I guess it was a series of books.

Wow! It’s sounding more and more like [name]Clarice[/name] is maybe a name we should NOT add to our list. [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs sounds like one creepy movie to me!!! We are not pregnant yet, but hoping to be soon, and I just love thinking of names for our future baby… [name]Clarice[/name] is just one I came across today actually, not one we’ve been planning on using. At the moment our top pick for a girl’s name is [name]Elena[/name], with [name]Cecily[/name] and [name]Coralie[/name] close behind. Looks like we should probably stay away from [name]Clarice[/name] - even though it’s such a pretty name. :frowning: Oh well, my hubby probably wouldn’t like it anyway. So glad I checked with all of you before trying to convince my hubby what a pretty name it was! Think we’ll stick with our current list for now…
Thanks everyone!

Wow, I’m really surprised by the negative comments on this name. [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs is almost 20 years old! No kids are going to be aware of it until well into their teens (when it will be 30+ years out of date) as it is definitely rated R. [name]Do[/name] all the previous posters think parents are going to mock a child for having that name? Besides, the [name]Jodi[/name] [name]Foster[/name] character was a very strong role model type character.
Maybe I’m biased because I had a friend by that name - before the movie came out - that gave me a very possitive association. And she doesn’t get bugged about [name]Hannibal[/name] Lector.

I prefer the spelling [name]Clarisse[/name], which seems a little more modern (the “-ice” ending looks very fusty to me). That said, it’s a beautiful name, and the “[name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs” reference is beginning to be dated…it’s not something I’d worry about too much.

I don’t know. ‘Helloooooo [name]Clarice[/name]’ is a pretty iconic line. Not sure it will [name]EVER[/name] go totally into obscurity. And even if many people don’t comment on it, it’s still a creepy association to saddle on a child. 'Are the lambs still screaming, [name]Clarice[/name]?" Ugh! Chills!!!
Then again, I like [name]Sybil[/name] despite the multiple personality movie association!

>.< when did she become his lover?? Did I miss something??

Anyway, [name]Clarice[/name] is a very pretty name!! My first thought is, like all the others, [name]Clarice[/name] [name]Starling[/name], [name]Hannibal[/name] Lecter, and one of my favorite lines of all time, “It rubs the lotion on it’s skin or it gets the hose again”…O.o. Sorry!!

I adore [name]Annaliese[/name], although I pronounce the final E as ‘uh’, but I think I am one of only a few people to do so outside of Germany … I most definitely prefer the [name]Annaliese[/name] spelling.

I know a [name]Clarice[/name] who pronounces her name CLA-riss.

[name]Auburn[/name]

I know of the [name]Silence[/name] of the Lambs, but my first thought is [name]Clarisse[/name] McClellan from Fahrenheit 451. It’s probably just as famous as the movie- I’m surprised no one mentioned it yet!
