I like way too many botanic names. There are some I don’t like, so no I did not just set out [name]EVERY[/name] floral name here, but I love an awful lot of them. Please tell me which you find attractive.
I think I did this once before but it was a long time ago and I’ve added some and dropped others so please forgive me.
[name]Briar[/name] - I love briar roses and the fairy-tale imagery, and I like prickly plants and the image of beauty with fierceness.
[name]Dahlia[/name] - I like [name]Dolly[/name] as a nickname. Pronunciation worries me though. I only like dahl-ya.
[name]Hazel[/name] - [name]Green[/name], fresh, blooms in winter, rather a strong austere sound, not super frilly.
[name]Holly[/name] - I like holly trees, and I like sea-holly. Sea-holly was my something blue in my wedding bouquet. Another lovably prickly plant. But the sound is dated compared to [name]Hazel[/name]?
[name]Hyacintha[/name] - A flower I’m very fond of, a first syllable I really like… but a name I’m not sure of. Usable?
[name]Ivy[/name] - signifies faithfulness and fidelity in flower language. I find it romantic.
[name]Lilac[/name] - I love lilacs, but is it too cotton-candy? The hard c ending strengthens it a little, I think?
[name]Lotus[/name] - Pretty, but too associated with the car?
[name]Magnolia[/name] - I like [name]Maggie[/name]. I also find this a stunningly beautiful tree. But I say it 3 syllables, mag-nol-ya, not 4. Problem?
[name]Maple[/name] - I’m a bit homesick for maple trees at the moment, but I don’t know if that makes it a good name.
[name]Marigold[/name] - Yellow, my favourite colour. I like the nickname [name]Goldie[/name] and [name]Mari[/name] doesn’t bother me either.
[name]Marguerite[/name] - I love the name, but it’s long and I can’t think of any palatable nicknames.
[name]Rosemary[/name] - For rememberance.
[name]Rue[/name] - Aka herb-of-grace. An herb, and a flower. Maybe a MN. Freaks some people out because of the “regret” meaning…?
[name]Saffron[/name] - Spicy, warm, cheerful, valued.
[name]Viola[/name] - I love this one, but is it too odd? I like it more than [name]Violet[/name].
[name]Zinnia[/name] - A cheery flower that reminds me of home. Meant “constancy” and “lasting affection” in flower language. It’s also adorable.
[name]Haven[/name]'t even touched the names that are from another language. That’s a whole different list! As you can see I’m just a [name]LITTLE[/name] BIT fond of my plant names.
And, because my husband thinks I just wrote down [name]EVERY[/name] plant name I could think of, there are at least a dozen more I could think of that aren’t here because I cleaned up my list or my husband vetoed them.
But if you want to recommend a different flower name, throw it on the thread.
[name]Briar[/name] - I think its very pretty, very Sleeping Beauty.
[name]Dahlia[/name] - I like the pronounciation you used but it could still be an issue.
[name]Hazel[/name] - I really like this, but I worry its too old lady.
Hycintha - Its not my style, but it could work.
[name]Ivy[/name] - [name]Ivy[/name] is cute and pretty.
[name]Lilac[/name] - This is probably my favourite, its so beautiful!
[name]Lotus[/name] -Not sure I would be game enough to use it.
[name]Magnolia[/name] -I love this.
[name]Maple[/name] - Not too fond of this.
[name]Marigold[/name] - Its nice, but I don’t know if its too fairy-ish.
[name]Marguerite[/name] - My great great nanna’s name its okay but I prefer Griet.
[name]Rosemary[/name] - Very pretty!
[name]Rue[/name] - It okay.
[name]Saffron[/name]-A bit too literal for me.
[name]Viola[/name] - Its lovely and very useful!
[name]Zinnia[/name] - I like it but prefer [name]Xenia[/name]
So anyway my ranking for Top 5:
1 Lilac
2.Rosemary
3.Viola
4.Magnolia
5. Ivy
Did I mention I like your taste? haha.
6. Briar
7. Dahlia
[name]Briar[/name] - The name has always seemed to similar to [name]Prior[/name] (like the clergy member title) to be attractive as a name.
[name]Dahlia[/name] - Beautiful name. And I agree your preferred pronunciation is the nicest.
[name]Hazel[/name] - It’s a decent name. It’s a bit ‘grandma-y’ to me, but if that doesn’t bother you it’s a nice name
[name]Holly[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t like this name. Never have.
[name]Hyacintha[/name] - Doesn’t seem too usable as a name to me.
[name]Ivy[/name] -[name]Don[/name]'t like it, and the itchy stuff bugs the hell outta me.
[name]Lilac[/name] - I really like this flower as a name, it’s one of the flower names I’m surprised isn’t used more. My niece is named [name]Lilac[/name]. I think it’s a beautiful name.
[name]Lotus[/name] - I didn’t associate it with a car, but I feel like this would make a better MN.
[name]Magnolia[/name] - I like this one a lot. Probably my favorite of your choices here.
[name]Maple[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t feel it makes a good name. Too sticky.
[name]Marigold[/name] - It’s okay. Could work on someone, but wouldn’t be my preference.
[name]Marguerite[/name] - I love the name, but it’s long and I can’t think of any palatable nicknames.
[name]Rosemary[/name] - I think this would make a nice MN, but not a fan for a FN.
[name]Rue[/name] - I think this would make a nice MN, but not a fan for a FN.
[name]Saffron[/name] - I think this could grow on me as a name. At first I wasn’t a fan, after saying it a bit more, I think I could grow to like it.
[name]Viola[/name] - It’s nice, but feels a little like it’s just violet chopped off at the end (if it wasn’t in a list of flower names I might think you just decided to butcher [name]Violet[/name] to your own taste a bit)
[name]Zinnia[/name] - I actually like this one quite a bit. Probably my second favorite of your list.
Though my personal favorite name in this category of names would DEFINITELY be:
[name]Amaryllis[/name]
and then:
[name]Linnea[/name]
[name]Ayanna[/name] (Swahili = beautiful flower)
[name]Delphine[/name] (delphinium is the name of a flower)
This are my favorites (some weren’t on your list):
[name]Lily[/name], [name]Lotus[/name], [name]Rose[/name], [name]Rosalie[/name], [name]Rosalind[/name], [name]Orchid[/name]
These are ones that I like:
[name]Magnolia[/name], [name]Dahlia[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name] - [name]One[/name] of my favorite names. It just sounds so pretty and fun.
[name]Ivy[/name] - Sometimes I feel like I’m saying IV (intravenous), which isn’t good. But I still like it.
[name]Rosemary[/name] - [name]Rosemary[/name]'s [name]Baby[/name] almost ruined this name for me, but I just think it’s lovely. I like [name]Rose[/name] and [name]Mary[/name], so it only makes sense.
[name]Briar[/name] - This one is fun. I actually like [name]Briar[/name]-[name]Rose[/name].
[name]Marigold[/name] - [name]Marigold[/name] is such a cute name! It has the ever-popular nickname option of [name]Mary[/name], too.
[name]Holly[/name] - I really like this name. It reminds me of [name]Christmas[/name].
[name]Magnolia[/name] - I would go with the 3 syllable pronunciation, too. [name]Maggie[/name] can be cute.
[name]Hyacintha[/name] - I think [name]Hyacinth[/name] works better. Pretty.
[name]Zinnia[/name] - I generally dislike “z” names, but this is a pretty one.
[name]Saffron[/name] - I like this one ok, but I do not think it is as pretty as some of the others.
[name]Maple[/name] - This seems like it would work well in the middle. It kind of feels a little frumpy, though.
[name]Lilac[/name] - I actually hate the hard “c” sound at the end. I wouldn’t want a name that ended in “ack”.
[name]Dahlia[/name] - I prefer the “[name]DAY[/name]-li-a” pronunciation, but I probably wouldn’t use it anyway because of the [name]Black[/name] [name]Dahlia[/name] association.
[name]Viola[/name] - I don’t think of a plant, I think of a stringed instrument. I do not like the sound of this.
[name]Marguerite[/name] - I like the sound, but all I can think about is margaritas.
[name]Rue[/name] - I am reminded of 4 things: 1). Kanagroos 2). “rue the day” 3). The “roux” mixture in cooking 4). The French word for “road” maybe it works as a middle name, because a lot of people like it, but I wouldn’t use it.
[name]Lotus[/name] - This has a lot of sexual connotations. I do not like this as a name.
I’ve been hearing [name]Azalea[/name] a lot lately, and I quite like it. Not sure if it is one you have considered.
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Holly[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Magnolia[/name] - my favourite nn is [name]Nola[/name].
[name]Marigold[/name]
[name]Marguerite[/name] - nn [name]Daisy[/name] or [name]Margot[/name]
[name]Rosemary[/name]
[name]Saffron[/name]
[name]Zinnia[/name]
I would not use…
[name]Lotus[/name] - too much sensual baggage.
[name]Rue[/name] - Not advisable.
[name]Viola[/name] - I used to love this Shakespearean name until someone mentioned it’s used in Spanish for rape.
[name]Hyacintha[/name] - Reminds me of snobbish Mrs Bucket on “Keeping Up Appearances”
[name]Maple[/name] - better as a quirky mn choice
[name]Lilac[/name] - a guilty pleasure of mine but I think it’s better in the middle spot.
[name]Briar[/name] - too harsh sounding for me to see the appeal
[name]Dahlia[/name] - too many pronunciation issues
my favourites are
[name]Dahlia[/name]
[name]Holly[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Lilac[/name]
ave you thought of any others like [name]Rose[/name], [name]Lily[/name] and [name]Poppy[/name]
[name]Briar[/name] - Not a fan of the sound, but the fairy-tale association makes it pretty. Definitely wearable.
[name]Dahlia[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] IT. But I’m with you, sounds best when it’s dahl-ya.
[name]Hazel[/name] - Grounded and pleasant
[name]Holly[/name] - Same as [name]Hazel[/name]. I don’t think it’s dated.
[name]Hyacintha[/name] - Eh. Too out there.
[name]Ivy[/name] - Too trendy
[name]Lilac[/name] - Interesting. Could work as a first or a middle
[name]Lotus[/name] - Not a fan. I think it sounds ugly.
[name]Magnolia[/name] - [name]Love[/name] it. Sounds very Southern belle, plus [name]Maggie[/name] and [name]Nola[/name] are solid nns.
[name]Maple[/name] - Sounds weird as a name.
[name]Marigold[/name] - A bit saccharine, but I like it anyway
[name]Marguerite[/name] - Agreed about the nicknames. As a full name, it’s a bit of a mouthful.
[name]Rosemary[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the [name]Hamlet[/name] reference. Not so much the name. It’s just ok.
[name]Rue[/name] - Rising in popularity due to the Hunger Games character, which outweighs the negative meaning [name]IMO[/name]. [name]Pleasant[/name] and wearable.
[name]Saffron[/name] - [name]Love[/name] it as a middle. Still pretty good as a first name.
[name]Viola[/name] - Possibly my favorite name ever. Gorgeous with an awesome namesake. I wouldn’t worry about the Spanish thing-- in Spanish it’d be VEE-oh-la, whereas I feel like most English speakers would say VIE-oh-la.
[name]Zinnia[/name] - Fun. Not sure it’s particularly wearable, but fun.
My favorites on your list are:
[name]Briar[/name]- such a pretty name, and I like the fairy-tale imagery like you!
[name]Hazel[/name]- My great-grandmother’s name, it is a strong name that I like, not sure of others opinions though.
[name]Holly[/name]- very nice!
[name]Marguerite[/name]- It is a really pretty and uncommon name, not sure of any nicknames to make it shorter.
[name]Viola[/name]- I absolutely love this name! It is very pretty!
[name]Zinnia[/name]-I think this is precious, not sure if it would age well, but really cute nonetheless.
[name]Briar[/name] - It’s pretty with an edge. I wouldn’t use it though.
[name]Dahlia[/name] - We pronounce it differently. I wouldn’t think to pronounce it your way, and [name]Dolly[/name] ruins it for me.
[name]Hazel[/name] - I like it but worry about it’s gaining popularity.
[name]Holly[/name] - [name]Holly[/name] always sounds like a stripper’s name to me. [name]Hope[/name] that doesn’t offend anyone.
[name]Hyacintha[/name] - I think a lot of people would struggle with pronunciation and spelling, but it’s beautiful if that isn’t a concern of yours.
[name]Ivy[/name] - Pretty, but again, I worry about the popularity.
[name]Lilac[/name] - I like it. Not my favorite, but good.
[name]Lotus[/name] - My husband would go straight to the car. It just seems less namelike than many of the others to me.
[name]Magnolia[/name] - I say it the same way you do. It is also one of my absolute favorites. This was our runner up name.
[name]Maple[/name] - [name]Maple[/name] is growing on me. I think it’s adorable. Like a more modern [name]Mable[/name].
[name]Marigold[/name] - It’s not my favorite. [name]Goldie[/name] is adorable though.
[name]Marguerite[/name] - Not my style at all.
[name]Rosemary[/name] - Cute but not particularly interesting.
[name]Rue[/name] - I think it’s a sweet name, but it needs a more substantial name to pair it with.
[name]Saffron[/name] - This has never sounded attractive to me.
[name]Viola[/name] - I think [name]Viola[/name] is wonderful. Much better than [name]Violet[/name].
[name]Zinnia[/name] - Very pretty and unusual.
[name]One[/name] of my favorites that was not included is [name]Iris[/name]. I also really like [name]Posey[/name].
[name]Briar[/name] - I like it, but you would have to pair it with a very feminine mn or keep the double-barrel [name]Rose[/name] if you ask me
[name]Dahlia[/name] - I only say this as Dahl-ee-uh so it depends on how much that bugs you and if you’d want to correct it often
[name]Ivy[/name] - Might be my favorite on your list, I adore this name. So feminine without being “too flowery” if that makes sense
[name]Magnolia[/name] - I like it better 4 syllables as mag-noll-ee-uh but I suppose it could work. [name]Love[/name] the possible nn [name]Lola[/name] also
[name]Marigold[/name] - Yes, but all of it’s appeal is in the nn’s [name]Merry[/name] and [name]Goldie[/name]. Would you prefer to use the long version most of the time?
[name]Viola[/name] - Would definitely stand out, and I too like it more than [name]Violet[/name]. Plus you get the flower and musical vibe from it =]
Those are my favorites from your list. I also liked [name]Dahlia[/name], but I think the old MTV show [name]Dalia[/name] makes everyone pronounce with a nasally a.
[name]Briar[/name] - 4/10 a little too masculine
[name]Dahlia[/name] - 6/10 cute, but I don’t like [name]Dolly[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name] - 9/10 adore this name
[name]Holly[/name] - 2/10 - old and dated
[name]Hyacintha[/name] - 1/10 too weird for a name
[name]Ivy[/name] - 10/10 love this name
[name]Lilac[/name] - 6/10 - a little too sweet, but a cute name
[name]Lotus[/name] - 1/10 - too exotic/stripper for me
[name]Magnolia[/name] - 10/10 beautiful!
[name]Maple[/name] - 2/10 just not right for a name. maybe a dog.
[name]Marigold[/name] - 5/10- not bad, not great
[name]Marguerite[/name] - 8/10 A good nickname is [name]Daisy[/name]! It is a type of daisy and related in french
[name]Rosemary[/name] - 4/10 too dated
[name]Rue[/name] - 9/10 love the Hunger Games connection, sweet name
[name]Saffron[/name] - 6/10 a little dated but cute
[name]Viola[/name] - 5/10 - okay, I prefer my daughter’s name, [name]Violet[/name], more
[name]Zinnia[/name] - 3/10 more of a cute childish name than a name [name]Suzanna[/name] or something could have this as a nn
my favs are:
[name]Hazel[/name]- love this one, it’s on my list too
[name]Viola[/name]- I fell in love with this one not to long ago it’s really cute
[name]Marigold[/name] - also another love of mine!
[name]Zinnia[/name] - very nice and fresh
[name]Ivy[/name] - like this one aswell, a bit more tame then some of the other ones
not my style:
[name]Hyacintha[/name] - to much of a mouth full for me
[name]Rue[/name]- I personally wouldn’t use it because of the regret meaning, but that’s just me
[name]Marguerite[/name]- to much of a mouth full for me aswell
Hate -
[name]Maple[/name]
[name]Zinnia[/name]
[name]Marguerite[/name]
[name]Hyacintha[/name]
[name]Lotus[/name] – The first thing I think of is Locusts when I look at this. I’d associate a child with this name with a bug.
The “hate” category is really the only collection of names that I would strongly urge someone considering them not to use. I wouldn’t question any of the others.
