Please rate our names

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]
Our little boy is due in just over a month. Our two main contenders for names at the moment are [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Edward[/name_m]. I don’t want to rule out any of our ( mostly my) choices just yet. Could you please rate these name out of ten and give a reason of why you do or don’t like them?
Thanks so much!

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]
[name_m]William[/name_m]

1| [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] | number 1 because it’s classic, cute, but still handsome (ages well) & works well with majority of your other names.
2| [name_m]William[/name_m] | you could never go wrong with [name_m]William[/name_m].
3| [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] | number 3 because it has becomes exaggeratedly popular recently but it is still a nice name.
4| [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] | I love this name personally but in my opinion it does mix as well with the top 3 names.
5| [name_m]Hamish[/name_m] | I strongly dislike this name personally and think the pronounciation is too easy to butcher. Also, again, I don’t think it fits in well with the other handsome classics.

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]: 5. It’s ok, but very popular. And there are so much nicer names ending in -as
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]: 9. I love it. It has a nice sound and it’s more unique than [name_u]James[/name_u]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]: 2. I strongly dislike it, but I can’t explain why. I just don’t like the sound and the way it looks. It’s also old fashioned in a not-so-good way
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]: 7. A nice Biblical name with nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u] or [name_u]Sammy[/name_u], I like it.
[name_m]William[/name_m]: 6. Nothing wrong with it, but very common.

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - I give it a 6 out of 10. I prefer [name_u]Luca[/name_u] or [name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] - 7/10, I actually like this a lot. However it does have potential to be said incorrectly depending on where you live
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. - 4/10, just not really into this name
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - 8/10
[name_m]William[/name_m] - 9/10. Nn options if wanted.

I love [name_m]William[/name_m] and really like [name_m]Samuel[/name_m].

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - 9/10
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] - 2/10
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] - 1/10
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - 10/10
[name_m]William[/name_m] - 7/10

I love [name_m]Samuel[/name_m]!

1.[name_m]Hugo[/name_m](this name is number one from your list because it is so handsome and different)
2.[name_m]Samuel[/name_m](I have always loved this name although it’s on my GP list and it’s just so classic and I like the cute nn.[name_u]Sam[/name_u])
3.[name_m]Hamish[/name_m](I like unusual names and this one intrigues me a lot)
4.[name_m]William[/name_m](boring, nothing excited although I can say that it is very classic and I see the name’s appeal)
5.[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]( way too popular for my taste plus nothing special or different)

From your top 2 I would say definitely go with [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] because that name sounds and is so much more manly, strong, and handsome than [name_m]Edward[/name_m](I hate the nn [name_m]Ed[/name_m]) Good luck naming your precious boy!

1 is I dislike it, 10 is I love it:
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]: 7-- Popularity plays a role on how much I like it. handsome, easy to spell, great sound
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]: 1-- Starts with [name_m]Ham[/name_m]. makes me automatically dislike it.
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]: 5 – Not my taste really, but easy to spell and there’s a modern vibe with a coolness factor
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]: 4-- Easy to spell but popular and almost dull in my opinion
[name_m]William[/name_m]: 8 – [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_m]Will[/name_m] I love as nicknames, classic and no spelling issues, love it

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - 6/10. I like it along with [name_m]Luke[/name_m]. It’s certainly an attractive masculine name.
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] - 2/10. Apologies, but I truly dislike it. It doesn’t sound or look particularly attractive to me.
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] - 2/10. Again, I dislike it. It makes me think of an upper class twit.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - 7/10. It’s a classic and very handsome.
[name_m]William[/name_m] - 7/10. It’s very popular but traditional. You cannot go wrong with this name.

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]- I love this name! [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is an adorable nn too
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]- I loved this until my grandma and the rest of my family kept pronouncing it [name_m]HAM[/name_m]-ish when there was a newscaster with this name :stuck_out_tongue:
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]- Very cute  It reminds me of [name_m]Victor[/name_m] [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name, though I’m not a huge fan of [name_u]Sam[/name_u], so I wouldn’t use it
[name_m]William[/name_m]- This has been one of my favorite boys names for years  It’s so handsome and classy.

I also love [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Edward[/name_m]. Really, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these names

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] – I really love it, but its so trendy right now.
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] – Handsome and charming.
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] – Interesting, but with lots of butchering potential.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] – Very cute. I love the nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u].
[name_m]William[/name_m] – I like it, but it’s not my favourite. I really like (nn?) [name_m]Liam[/name_m], though.

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]- 6/10. I like it but it isn’t my favorite from your list. I prefer [name_m]Luke[/name_m].
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]- 4/10. I just am not a fan. I don’t like how it looks written down since the [name_m]Ham[/name_m] is prominent.
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]- 6/10. Its a nice name, just not my style. I think it is short and spunky and a solid choice.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]- 10/10. This name is one of my favorites! I think it is classic and suits all ages.
[name_m]William[/name_m]- 8/10. It is a great name. I’d probably have it on my list if it wasn’t my brother’s name =)

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] 2/10 - too popular, and lacks personality.
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] 2/10 - I feel like there’s a lot of teasing potential here, and almost too MUCH personality
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] 10/10 - I adore this name. It will age very well, and can be adorable and respectable in different times. It’s a name someone could really make their own.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] 10/10 - I adore this name as well. It’s a bit ahead of the curve, distinct but familiar enough that anybody could remember it. I could see a [name_m]Samuel[/name_m] on the baseball team or in school plays.
[name_m]William[/name_m] - 5/10 - Feels a little plain. I actually like any of the nicknames ([name_m]Liam[/name_m]'s cute, [name_u]Billy[/name_u] is awesome) better.

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]-I want to like [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], but I knew one growing up who got a lot of mucus taunts. I would give it an 9, but because of that knowledge I have to say 7
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]-Wayyy to ham(as in the sandwich meat)ish. 2
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]-Interested. I like it’s steampunk feel. 8
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]-There are so many [name_u]Sam[/name_u]'s out there, plus I am still thinking of ham, lol. 6
[name_m]William[/name_m]-Classic, strong, handsome, kind, and perfect for every age and personality. Although, it lacks character and uniqueness. 9

[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]–6/10. I vacillate between finding it super-cute and thinking it’s a little too intentionally “old man chic”
[name_m]Edward[/name_m]–7/10. I love [name_m]Ned[/name_m], [name_m]Ted[/name_m]/[name_u]Teddy[/name_u], and many of the other nicknames. However, the name itself is a little dry and doughty for me, although it’s growing on me.
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]–5/10. One of those names that is very similar to a favorite name ([name_m]Luke[/name_m]) and irritates me more because it just doesn’t live up to the other name. [name_m]Luke[/name_m] is so much stronger and more interesting.
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m]–6/10. Very similar reaction as to [name_m]Oscar[/name_m].
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]–3/10. I like the association with [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] Cabret, a favorite book of mine, but other than that it doesn’t do much for me.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m]–9.5/10. Nearly perfect. Strong but soft, lovely meaning, rich history, good nicknames.
[name_m]William[/name_m]–9/10. Not quite as wonderful as [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], but has the benefit of even more similarly amazing nicknames.

Thanks for your replies everyone, they are very helpful. It’s so interesting to gauge other people’s opinions. Keep them coming!!

Congratulations, @casse!

So excited for you!

All respectable names.

Feedback based upon my personal preferences:

[name_m]Edward[/name_m] – too safe
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] – too foreign unless used in United Kingdom or Australia
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] – just right
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] – just right
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] – just right {my personal favorite}
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] – too safe
[name_m]William[/name_m] – too safe

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - 9/10 love this name, [name_m]Luke[/name_m] too
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - 9/10 a real classic, adore the nn [name_u]Sam[/name_u]/[name_u]Sammy[/name_u]
[name_m]William[/name_m] - 7/10 a very solid, strong name. Lots of nickname potential - [name_m]Will[/name_m]/[name_m]Willy[/name_m]/[name_u]Billy[/name_u]/[name_m]Bill[/name_m]/[name_m]Liam[/name_m] (I love [name_m]Liam[/name_m] and [name_m]Will[/name_m], btw)
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] - 6/10 definitely an interesting name, not really heard where I live - for some reason I find it hard to picture on a child, but probably because I’ve never known anyone by that name.
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] - 5/10 It’s not a bad name by any means but it’s one letter off from “huge”. What about [name_m]Hugh[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m] or [name_m]Harry[/name_m]?

[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] - 10/10 It’s a wonderful name, an absolutely classical name!
[name_m]Hamish[/name_m] - 8/10 A nice Scottish name with a lot of style!
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] - 0/10 A name I really hate! Sorry.
[name_m]Samuel[/name_m] - 5/10 Not a bad name it has potential I like [name_u]Sam[/name_u] as a nickname though!
[name_m]William[/name_m] - 0/10 Another name I really hate! Sorry.
