Please rate these boys' names for me

These are some of the boys’ names we are considering. Please rate them 1-5 (1 meaning you don’t like it at all, and 5 meaning you love it), and I’d love to hear why.
Last name Maynar. Please feel free to suggest any other names you think we might like!
Our favs are **

** [name]Beckett[/name]
** [name]Griffin[/name]
** [name]Brant[/name]
** [name]Weston[/name]

  • [name]Cole[/name]
  • [name]Corbin[/name]
  • [name]Mason[/name] (worried about this being too close to our last name, not to mention, quite
    popular)
  • [name]Clayton[/name]
  • [name]Donovan[/name]
  • [name]Kean[/name]
  • [name]Trey[/name] (as a nn for a III)
  • [name]Reuben[/name]
  • Clarkson (family maiden name - most likely use only as a middle)
  • [name]Bennet[/name]

Please let me know what you think!

** [name]Beckett[/name] - 3 because it has a nice sound and is an interesting literary reference, but I don’t love the nn [name]Beck[/name] as it reminds me of [name]Becky[/name] and because I feel it lacks charm somehow
** [name]Griffin[/name] - 4, I like this one but I don’t love it, if only because I think there are more handsome names out there that would be more distinctive (plus short form [name]Griff[/name] sounds kind of like gruff)
** [name]Brant[/name] - 3 I can see the appeal of a short and sharp name but it has a very blah sound to me (like bran)
** [name]Weston[/name] - 4 I generally am not a huge fan of the surname trend (especially because I think many of these types of names will sound dated someday) but I happen to really like this one. I also [name]LOVE[/name] short form [name]West[/name]. It has a very handsome and rugged feel to it, while still being accessible. The thing that holds me back is that I could see how it might also sound a bit like a cheap hotel chain. I also adore [name]Wyatt[/name] (would have given that a 5) - not sure if that would be a consideration for you.

  • [name]Cole[/name] - 2, not a fan of this one at all; sounds just like coal, and something about that long o sound just sounds dweeby to my ears.
  • [name]Corbin[/name] - another 2, sounds more like a brand than a name
  • [name]Mason[/name] - 1, lots of people love this name, but all I see is a fat kid with a bowl haircut. And, besides, if you really MUST use an occupational name, I would at least use something slightly more interesting like [name]Author[/name] or [name]Archer[/name] (naming your kid [name]Mason[/name] is like nakming them Plumber or Exterminator).
  • [name]Clayton[/name] - 5+, I love this one; it’s just so handsome with its balance of hard and soft sounds, very elegant and distinguished. NN [name]Clay[/name] is also awesome and is one of those rare nn’s that will sound fun on a little boy but age quite gracefully.
  • [name]Donovan[/name] - 5 I love this one too (an exception to my surname aversion because it’s been so long used as a first name that it’s taken on a sort of vintage feel and because it has short form [name]Don[/name] to tone down the surname-y-ness of it). [name]Just[/name] a very distinguished name, sounds like a real gentleman. (The only drawback might be that it’s a lot of name for a little boy, but [name]Donnie[/name] is just adorable).
  • [name]Kean[/name] - 0, not to keen on this one  [name]Just[/name] sounds flimsy and made-up, almost girly. Perhaps you’d like [name]Kieran[/name]? [name]Keith[/name] is also nice, but I’d probably prefer this as a middle name ([name]Donovan[/name] [name]Keith[/name] would make a great combo).
  • [name]Trey[/name] - 2 as a name; 5 as a nn (sounds very British, which is cool. Also reminds me of [name]Trey[/name] from Sex and the City).
  • [name]Reuben[/name] - 5+ I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Reuben[/name]!! It’s just such a great name. It sounds friendly and light, while still having such depth and history. [name]Just[/name] a really great sound and a really comfortable feel. Something a little different while still being classic.
  • Clarkson - 1, don’t like this at all. It’s one of those surname names that need never cross the line to first name spot, and in fact sounds more like a caricature of an all American surname than even a real one.
  • [name]Bennet[/name] 3, I like this and [name]Ben[/name] is a great nn. I’d prefer the classic [name]Benjamin[/name], though; [name]Bennet[/name] just sounds like it’s trying too hard to be different.

** [name]Beckett[/name] - 5 - Not too common, but not out there either.
** [name]Griffin[/name] - 3 - I’m personally not such a fan because I don’t like the nn [name]Griff[/name].
** [name]Brant[/name] - 4 - I like it. Would it get mixed up with similar names like [name]Brent[/name] or [name]Brad[/name] though?
** [name]Weston[/name] - 5 - I really like this name. I think it’s just a little hipper than [name]Wesley[/name]. I would definitely consider this for my own child.

  • [name]Cole[/name] - 2 - Eh. Not bad, but not my favorite either.
  • [name]Corbin[/name] - 2 - Again, just not my favorite on this list.
  • [name]Mason[/name] - 1 - I agree with your concerns about popularity and going with your last name. I also feel like the girl’s are trying to take this for their own these days.
  • [name]Clayton[/name] - 5 - This name has been growing on me lately. [name]Clayton[/name] sounds rather formal, but the nn [name]Clay[/name] sounds cool. A good combo to have in a name.
  • [name]Donovan[/name] - 2 - I’ve just never been a huge fan, but that’s just a personal preference. I don’t think there’s anything “wrong” with it. I do think it’s a nice, strong boys name.
  • [name]Kean[/name] - 4 - I really like this name too. My only concern is that it might be a little trendier and less timeless than some of your other options here, but if that’s more your style, go for it!
  • [name]Trey[/name] (as a nn for a III) - 2 - [name]Trey[/name] Maynar just sounds a little rhymey to me.
  • [name]Reuben[/name] - 1 - [name]Just[/name] not my style. I can’t particularly put my finger on why.
  • Clarkson - 3 - In the full form, it sounds a little too much like a last name to me, but I like [name]Clark[/name] as a first name. Could go very well in as a mn like you were thinking.
  • [name]Bennet[/name] - 4 - I like it. Nice and solid.

Thanks jlm and jlou for sharing your thoughts and suggestions. You both had some good points. Jlm, about your suggestions:
[name]Wyatt[/name] - we have a couple of friends with this name, so I feel like it’s kind of not an option.
[name]Kieran[/name] - I really love this name, but again, we have a friend who named their little boy this.
[name]Keith[/name] - I like this for a middle name!

Jlou,
Thanks for pointing out that [name]Trey[/name] is kind of rhymey with Maynar. Guess that wasn’t such a good idea…
Also about [name]Brant[/name] - confusion with other names like [name]Brent[/name], and [name]Grant[/name] is one thing I too worry about. Hmmmm…

Thanks again for all the advice!

[name]Beckett[/name]: 5…I think [name]Beckett[/name] is so handsome!

[name]Griffin[/name]: 4…I think it’s a great name, but I hear a lot of N with [name]Griffin[/name] Mayner.

[name]Brant[/name]: 1…It’s not [name]Brant[/name]'s fault, but something about the name has never appealed to me. I wonder if it’s because I think of bran. Hmm… Others you may like: [name]Grant[/name], [name]Reed[/name], [name]Everett[/name], [name]Rhys[/name]…

[name]Weston[/name]: 3…I think of [name]Weston[/name], MA. I love that suburb, but I can’t think of the name without thinking of [name]Weston[/name].

[name]Cole[/name]: 2: I guess [name]Cole[/name] feels trendy to me. I do think it’s a nice nickname for [name]Nicholas[/name]…

[name]Corbin[/name]: 3: But I like the names that don’t end in N better with Mayner.

[name]Mason[/name] (worried about this being too close to our last name, not to mention, quite
popular): 1: Because like you said, it’s close to your last name…If not for Mayner, I’d give it a three. I can see the appeal of [name]Mason[/name], but think a lot of other “son” names sound fresher.

[name]Clayton[/name]: 1, because [name]Clay[/name] and [name]May/name rhyme.

[name]Donovan[/name]: 5: I think this is such a cool surname…

[name]Kean[/name]: 2, because I think of the word “keen.”

[name]Trey[/name] (as a nn for a III): 1, because it feels so trendy to me, and [name]Trey[/name] and [name]May/name rhyme. You may also like [name]Trip[/name].

[name]Reuben[/name]: 4…

Clarkson (family maiden name - most likely use only as a middle): 3: I don’t see anything wrong with Clarkson in the middle, but up front, it would make me think of [name]Kelly[/name] Clarkson!

[name]Bennet[/name]: 5, but I love it spelled [name]Bennett[/name].

Good luck!

[name]Beckett[/name] - 3- nice but don’t love the sound w/ Maynar
[name]Griffin[/name] - 2- meh
[name]Brant[/name] - 1 - sounds very harsh to my ear, like [name]Branch[/name] and Ant.
[name]Weston[/name] - 4- although I know some girls with this name
[name]Cole[/name] - 4 - I really like 1 or 3 syllable FNs w/ 2 syl. LN’s
[name]Corbin[/name] - 1- sounds old-mannish to me
[name]Mason[/name] - 2 - agree sounds too much like LN
[name]Clayton[/name] - 3
[name]Donovan[/name] - 5- love this name and think it pairs well w/ Maynor
[name]Kean[/name] - 5 - so fresh and original and pairs well w/ Maynor
[name]Trey[/name] (as a nn for a III) - 3 - like the name but not the rhyme
[name]Reuben[/name] - 1 - nms
Clarkson - 2 as FN, 4/5 as MN
[name]Bennet[/name] - 4- although I’d spell it “[name]Bennett[/name]”

Good luck- you’ve got some great choices in there!

** [name]Beckett[/name] 3.5- I like [name]Beckett[/name] but it’s not my favorite. I think [name]Beckett[/name] Maynar sounds wonderful though…
** [name]Griffin[/name] 2.5- [name]Griffin[/name] feels very rough and tough to me. I love the nn [name]Finn[/name] though and I love [name]Finnian[/name], [name]Finlay[/name] and [name]Finnigan[/name]!
** [name]Brant[/name] 1.5- not my favorite…
** [name]Weston[/name] 2- I like it but it’s going to become trendy…

  • [name]Cole[/name] 3- It’s handsome but I prefer [name]Coleman[/name] nn [name]Cole[/name]. However [name]Coleman[/name] doesn’t sound ideal with your last name.
  • [name]Corbin[/name] 1- I’m really not a fan of this name…
  • [name]Mason[/name] 1.5(worried about this being too close to our last name, not to mention, quite
popular)- I agree that [name]Mason[/name] Maynar is much too close. I love [name]Miles[/name] though.
  • [name]Clayton[/name] 2- it’s not my style but it flows well
  • [name]Donovan[/name] 4- [name]LOVE[/name]!
  • [name]Kean[/name] 5- I love love this one! So beautiful!
  • [name]Trey[/name] 3 (as a nn for a III) It’s nice but I think of a tray. I like [name]Troy[/name] though…
  • [name]Reuben[/name] 4 - [name]Love[/name], so wonderful
  • Clarkson 2- (family maiden name - most likely use only as a middle)
I love when family names are used: [name]Clark[/name] is nice too.
  • [name]Bennet[/name] 4- [name]Love[/name], especially with two 't’s

I love so many of your choices, especially [name]Kean[/name], [name]Donovan[/name], [name]Reuben[/name] and [name]Bennett[/name]!

[name]Beckett[/name] - 5, love this name and the nickname [name]Beck[/name] or Becks, I think it will grow up well but is cute for a little boy too.

[name]Griffin[/name] - 5 - my little brother is named [name]Griffin[/name] (23) and he loves his name. When he was little we called him [name]Griffy[/name], then [name]Griff[/name] or [name]Griffin[/name] once he was older. You could also use [name]Finn[/name] as a nickname.

[name]Brant[/name] - 2- my DH name is [name]Brent[/name] and he HATES his name and people always confuse [name]Brent[/name]/[name]Brant[/name] and it jsut sounds blah to me.

[name]Weston[/name] - 3 - this is cute but for some reason i can’t picture a grown up [name]Weston[/name], but can I can see a grown [name]West[/name], maybe just [name]West[/name] by itself?

[name]Cole[/name] - 3 - not really my style but it is cute, i picture a little blonde kid with this name.

[name]Corbin[/name] - 4 - distinguished and uncommon but there really are no nickname possiblies, maybe [name]Gavin[/name]?

[name]Mason[/name] - 4- does sound like your LN but I still love this name no matter how popular it gets - every [name]Mason[/name] I have known is so cute…i went to undergrad w/ a couple Masons that were very attractive so maybe that is why i like it so much

[name]Clayton[/name] - 1 - all i think of is [name]Clay[/name] [name]Aiken[/name]…sorry.

[name]Donovan[/name] -3 - an ok name but I HATE the nickname [name]Don[/name], reminds me of an old man, maybe you could use [name]Van[/name]?

[name]Kean[/name] - 4- i like this just not sure I am saying it correctly, [name]KEEN[/name]…it is different, easy to spell and sounds good w/ your last name

[name]Trey[/name] (as a nn for a III) - 3, okay nothing special but i dont hate it

[name]Reuben[/name] - 1, not my style at all, i just picture a fat dirty man or a fat kid playing on the playground by himself…

Clarkson - 3, i think 5 for middle name, i think it is totally usable and [name]Clark[/name] is kind of refreshing and something you don’t hear very often

[name]Bennet[/name] - 5- spelled [name]Bennett[/name], i think it is classic, easy to pronounce and spell and would fit him through life.

a few suggestions

[name]Kellen[/name]
[name]Kelton[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]
[name]Cooper[/name]
[name]Anderson[/name]
[name]Tate[/name]
[name]Channing[/name]
[name]Cannon[/name]
[name]Rafferty[/name]

good luck!

** [name]Beckett[/name] - 5 - love it
** [name]Griffin[/name] - 3.5 - nice
** [name]Brant[/name] - 1 - don’t like
** [name]Weston[/name] - 3 - OK

  • [name]Cole[/name] - 2.5 - OK
  • [name]Corbin[/name] - 4 - very nice
  • [name]Mason[/name] - 3 - it’s very popular, but nice
  • [name]Clayton[/name] - 1 - can’t find the appeal, sorry
  • [name]Donovan[/name] - 4 - nice
  • [name]Kean[/name] - 2 - OK
  • [name]Trey[/name] - only as a nickname
  • [name]Reuben[/name] - 5 - absolutely love it
  • Clarkson - 1.5 - OK as a middle name
  • [name]Bennet[/name] - spelled [name]Bennett[/name] - 5 - gorgeous

[name]Bennett[/name], [name]Beckett[/name] and [name]Reuben[/name] are my favorites.

** [name]Beckett[/name] -1- I’ve never really been able to get into this name, but strangely, I adore [name]Beck[/name].
** [name]Griffin[/name] -4- [name]Love[/name] [name]Griffin[/name], its quite fabulous on a little boy, but I’m not sure if it would age well past the teenage years.
** [name]Brant[/name] -5- This is great! Its unique and handsome without being unheard of. Also very easy to spell and pronounce, which is a plus.
** [name]Weston[/name] -1- Its alright. I have a bad association with this name, so its not my favorite. I prefer [name]Wesley[/name].

  • [name]Cole[/name] -5- Very nice. Handsome, strong, not terribly common, easy to spell/pronounce, ages well. I would use this if I didn’t have a cousin named [name]Cole[/name].
  • [name]Corbin[/name] -3- I like this! But, kind of trendy… not sure if that bothers you or not.
  • [name]Mason[/name] -2- Its just okay.
  • [name]Clayton[/name] -3- I like this in theory, but when I say it out loud I just don’t love the way it sounds. Nickname [name]Clay[/name] is very cool though and its still a good choice.
  • [name]Donovan[/name] -2- Eh, its alright but not a favorite of mine. I don’t like nickname [name]Don[/name] or [name]Donnie[/name] at all which I think is almost unavoidable. The nickname [name]Van[/name] could be very cool though.
  • [name]Kean[/name] -1- [name]Don[/name]'t really care for this. If you were going to use it, spell it [name]Keane[/name]. I much prefer the similar [name]Cian[/name].
  • [name]Trey[/name] -5- [name]Love[/name] this. Its been a favorite of mine lately. I like it by itself or as a nickname for the III or even the third child.
  • [name]Reuben[/name] -2- I think of the sandwich. It has a nice sound though.
  • Clarkson -4- This would be nice as a middle, because it has family signifigance. Otherwise I would say go with [name]Clark[/name]! I love [name]Clark[/name]… very handsome, masculine and underused.
  • [name]Bennet[/name] -2- It’d be better spelled [name]Bennett[/name], but I much prefer [name]Benjamin[/name]. [name]Love[/name] the nickname [name]Ben[/name] though.

I want to thank each one of you who have shared your thoughts on my list, and offered other suggestions as well. You have given me a lot to think about, and consider! Thanks for all the help!

I really like the name [name]Beckett[/name]… actually named my son [name]Beck[/name] last year and love it!

do you like [name]Brandt[/name] or [name]Bryant[/name]??
