Please talk me out of this!

Hello Berries!

I have recently become infatuated with the name [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], but NOT that spelling! It just looks too long and crowded. Here is my ranking of preferred spellings:

  1. [name_m]Fredric[/name_m]
  2. [name_m]Frederic[/name_m]
  3. [name_m]Fredrik[/name_m]
  4. [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]
  5. [name_m]Frederik[/name_m]
  6. [name_m]Fredrick[/name_m]

What do you think? Would naming my son [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] or [name_m]Fredric[/name_m] doom him to a lifetime of complications? Please talk some sense into me, and get me to love [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] if you can!

I love [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]! It’s familiar, but not popular (at least in the US) and it has a great meaning. It might feel a bit buttoned-up for a little one, but the many of the nicknames make it feel approachable at any age. [name_f]My[/name_f] personal favorites are [name_u]Freddy[/name_u] and [name_m]Fritz[/name_m].

I don’t think [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] or [name_m]Fredric[/name_m] would be excessively complicated; I think it’s pretty well established these days to confirm spelling regardless of the name. That said, I am most unfamiliar with the [name_m]Fredric[/name_m] spelling – [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] and [name_m]Fredrik[/name_m] look more natural to me.

I think it’s one of those names that will require specifications no matter what, as there are many popular variants, so I think it’s fine!

[name_m]Frederick[/name_m] is wonderful, one of my favorites! I can see this spelling giving it a bit of a clunkier feel, though. I think [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] would be an easy option because you could just say “but without the k” and it would come across very easily. However, none of these spellings are too far out there; I definitely wouldn’t think you were “dooming” a son by choosing a less common one!

I actually really like [name_m]Fredric[/name_m] & [name_m]Frederic[/name_m]! They remind me a bit of [name_m]Eric[/name_m] & [name_m]Cedric[/name_m], and have a similar sort of heroic/historical vibe.

I think it depends where you are and what the most popular spelling is. Where I am, I know people would assume [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], but it could always be corrected. I quick like [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] - it has a slightly softer look - but ultimately, I prefer the regal, charming and complete looking [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] :person_shrugging:

I agree with @Greyblue I think it depends where you’re from as to which spelling will be more familiar. Where I am [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] will be more familiar and is definitely my favourite. However across most of Europe these alternative spellings will be more familiar. From the alternative spellings [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] is my favourite however I do prefer [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]! Either way such a gorgeous name

Are you in the US? If so, I’d stick to [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. [name_m]Fredric[/name_m] and [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] have not charted since the 70s. [name_m]Fredrik[/name_m] would cause some confusion as well, but it’s preferable to the above.

In the U.K. [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] is pretty popular (#61 in fact!) so I think here, other spellings would have a hard time. But as others have said that might be different elsewhere! I like the romantic edge of [name_m]Frederic[/name_m] but I’m less keen on the variants that miss out the middle -e, it looks incomplete to me.

Oh and if you need reasons to love [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] in full…how about [name_m]Captain[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] Wentworth from Persuasion?
