Much to my dismay, I saw a post on another site yesterday about the name [name]Elliot[/name]. Several parents commented about how they had chosen this name for their daughters. [name]AH[/name]! It’s the frontrunner for our [name]SON[/name]! My question is, then, when you hear the name [name]Elliot[/name], with which gender do you associate it? Is the girl thing a fad? [name]Will[/name] my son be awash in a sea of female Elliots? I do really like the name, but don’t want him to feel like we gave him a girl’s name. Help!
I’d immediately think boy, as I think most others in the U.S. would too, given its ranking on the U.S. social security popular names list for 2010. [name]Elliot[/name] is at #301 for boys and no spelling of [name]Elliot[/name] is even in the top 1000 for girls. Hopefully that will make you more confident to use it. I think it’s an awesome name!
I definitely think of it as a boy’s name. I dont know any girl Elliots.
I think of it as a boys name as well. A friend of mine named her son [name]Elliot[/name] about 8 months ago. I think it is an adorable name for a little boy!
i think of the girl on scubs… BUT there is an episode that says her dad named her [name]Elliot[/name] because he wanted a boy…
I think it is still pretty safe as a boys name!
It’s a boy name. Not using it for fear of it becoming a girl’s name is what turns it into a girl name. I love it for a boy and think it sounds terrible on a girl!
It is all boy to me, and one of my favorite boys names ever! I think it is an awful name for a girl, but that is just my opinion.
There are some little Elliette’s cropping up here and there, but [name]Elliot[/name] is very boyish. [name]Don[/name]'t worry!
Still a boy’s name to me. Go for it!
I am having the same problem with my boy names! They keep getting hijacked by girls! I have heard people using [name]Elliot[/name] for a girl, but I still think it sounds like a boy only name. I am having that problem with [name]Quinn[/name]. My husband and I both like it, but it is becoming more popular for girls, so i am debating scratching it from my list. My son’s name is [name]Everett[/name] and I have even heard people say it’s a girl’s name! At this rate there will be no boy’s names left. I say go for it! It is a great boy’s name, and the tv show won’t be around forever. I hope this trend ends soon for our sons’ sakes (Sorry, I honestly don’t want to insult anyone if you like those names for a girl, it is just very frustrating for boy mamas.)
I named my son [name]Elliott[/name] and had a bit of the same concern, but I also don’t mind him having a more gender neutral name. To me it’s definitely a boys name, and part of the reason I choose it was to make sure that the name wouldn’t be lost from the boys list. No one has commented on his name being girly, or anything of the sort.
As an addition, I wouldn’t worry too much about girls “taking over” boys’ names. It’s not like slightly feminine/unisex names have cooties! Speaking as someone who prefers more traditional, gender-specific names, I imagine that parents like to give boys’ names to girls because boys’ names (and men in general) are traditionally associated with strength and power–who doesn’t want those qualities for their little girl (no matter her name) in this day and age? I don’t think girls using male names necessarily detracts from the name’s more “masculine” qualities. (And if boys stop getting names like [name]Elliot[/name] because some parents are starting to give them to girls, then they will become predominantly girls’ names…)
Soapbox moment over. Sorry! I truly mean no offense; I just thought I would offer that as another perspective. I still think [name]Elliot[/name] is a great choice that is used MUCH more often for boys than girls. All the best!

I agree 100% with this! [name]Elliot[/name] doesn’t rank at all as a “girls’” name while it’s quite popular and well-loved for the boys. I personally don’t know anyone with the name [name]Elliot[/name]/[name]Elliott[/name] that’s a girl, and recently I’ve been hearing announcements of it being used for boys! I think you’re totally safe.
I love [name]Elliott[/name] for a boy and hate that people have been using it on girls. I’ve never personally met one, but a woman I work with said when she has a daughter she’s going to name her [name]Elliott[/name] [name]Flynn[/name] (HATE), and that’s the only one i’ve heard of.
It’s a boys name. Use it to keep it from becoming a girls name.
[name]Elliot[/name] should be left for the boys! [name]Just[/name] cuz it’s could have the nn [name]Ellie[/name], doesn’t mean it should be used for girls! There are not enough good boy’s names! It is so frustrating!
I automatically think of the girl [name]Elliot[/name] from Scubs… I think it would be okay for a boy maybe?
Elliott is on my boys list. I’ve known plenty of male Elliotts. I’ve never actually met a girl with the name though there are the two I know from TV. There’s Dr. Elliot Reid from “Scrubs” and Eliot [name]Jones[/name] (older sister to the [name]Jones[/name] quintuplets) from “Quints by Surprise”. But looking at the names of their quints (4 girls and 1 boy), it seems they like boy names for their girls. Two of the quints, Brooklyn and Lila have girly names, while the other two girls, Britton and Ryan have unisex/boyish names. Some people are going to give their girls boy names but I doubt the girls will outnumber the boys with this name.
[name]Elliot[/name] is absolutely a boys name! I’ve never met a girl named [name]Elliot[/name], but I have met a male [name]Elliot[/name]. Additionally, there are numerous males with the name in popular culture–[name]Elliott[/name] Gould, [name]Elliot[/name] Stabler from SVU, [name]Eliot[/name] [name]Spencer[/name] from Leverage, the kid from ET, and many more. It’s a masculine and handsome name.
Thank you so much for the reassurance, everyone! I was getting a little worried.
