Like many of us, my taste in names is ever-evolving. I am currently stuck on [name_f]Poet[/name_f], [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] and [name_u]Story[/name_u] as names for a girl!
I am not adventurous enough (at least not today) to use these as first names. I doubt my husband would go for them anyways! I would love to use one as a middle name though!
So some questions for you berries out there:
What do you think of these 3 names?
What is your favorite and why?
Are any of them realistically usable, or are they a setup for mocking and weird looks?
What are some names similar in style and feel that are not so “out there” and literal?
Thank you, I really look forward to seeing what everyone has to say!!!
I don’t like these three names as first names. I know they’re popular here, but they’re too word-ish for me, especially since I am a writer. I don’t think their classmates would make fun of them, but adults might think they’re very odd. They might make very nice middle names, especially if you are a writer or a voracious reader or a poetry fan. [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u], [name_u]Everly[/name_u] [name_f]Poet[/name_f], or [name_f]Julia[/name_f] [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] would be very nice combinations, for instance.
I think all three are very pretty. [name_u]Story[/name_u] (and [name_u]Paisley[/name_u]) are on my list. I have been discussing both with people, not on naming forums, which leads to discussions on lots of -wordy- names and I have gotten a lot of positive feedback on them. When I hear of an actual person with these names I fall more in love with them each time. If I have enough guts to use -wordy- names for a first I will use a more conservative Middle. You could use the -wordy- name in the middle and call the child by their middle name.
I really like them all for three darling little girls. Personally, they remind me a modern uptake–if someone had daughters named [name_f]Faith[/name_f], [name_f]Hope[/name_f], & [name_f]Charity[/name_f]. Or somewhere along those lines.
[name_f]Poet[/name_f], [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] and [name_u]Story[/name_u] would make quirky middle name choices but I don’t like them as first names for these reasons.
What if [name_f]Poet[/name_f] doesn’t like to write, what if [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] hates [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] and what if [name_u]Story[/name_u] is so hyperactive that she can’t keep still long enough to read a book?
[name_f]Poet[/name_f]- I just want to add “ry” at the end of it; [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] - I just want to recite love poems; [name_u]Story[/name_u] - I just think of tall buildings with many stories (floors)
If you named your daughter one of these names, what would you name any future children? Other words?
I think [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] is most usable. It just “feels” more like a name than [name_f]Poet[/name_f] and [name_u]Story[/name_u] which are more wordy.
Other Suggestions
Solace - one of my favourite word names ever. I love the meaning, the look and the sound!
[name_f]Clarity[/name_f] - in this world of constant change, this quality would be great to have in abundance.
[name_f]Tempest[/name_f] - it would be like tempting fate (would she be so fiery that she explodes in anger?), but I love this name.
[name_u]Harmony[/name_u] - in this time of political chaos, a little of this quality would go a long way!
Halo - there’s something about the sound of this name that gives off a peaceful vibe!
I love those names! [name_u]Story[/name_u] is most likely what my daughter will be named. Her big sister is [name_u]Ever[/name_u]. What I have found from having a word name child is that people are a bit more hesitant when you are talking about using a name. but meeting a cute little child with a name is completely different. When people meet my daughter, 9 times out of 10 they lover her name in part because they can relate it to this cute little girl.
I would like to answer the question about what would you name other children. I think many -wordy- names work very well with other names. A family with children named [name_f]Isabel[/name_f], [name_u]Story[/name_u], and [name_m]Declan[/name_m] sound very nice. All the names are different yet I feel work great together. I also feel that most families name children what they love and many times their children’s names do not match well.
I adore all three but only as middle names! I just can’t picture an angsty teenager going through a rebellious stage named [name_f]Poet[/name_f], and that’s enough reason for me to nix it as a first name. [name_u]Story[/name_u] is my personal favourite, though.
[name_f]Poet[/name_f]: I love it. I think this name could hold a lot of deep meaning. It could be hard to pull off if she wasn’t interested in reading or writing. I think of a wise girl. She learns from others and doesn’t repeat their mistakes. She loves to sing loudly in the car. She’s outgoing and writes all her thoughts down and asks you for help turning them into something beautiful for the talent show.
[name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]: It’s ok… I wouldn’t scold anyone for using the name I just think it sounds sound great. I think of a quiet girl. She likes to draw and proudly displays her pictures all over her room walls.
[name_u]Story[/name_u]: I actually really like story. I think of a sweet girl. She likes to climb trees just to read. She’s fearless and doesn’t regret.
2. What is your favorite and why?
I’m at a toss up for [name_f]Poet[/name_f] and [name_u]Story[/name_u]. I would use [name_u]Story[/name_u] [name_m]IRL[/name_m] though.
3. Are any of them realistically usable, or are they a setup for mocking and weird looks?
I think with the right girl she will be able to pull off any name you give her.
4. What are some names similar in style and feel that are not so “out there” and literal?
I know an actual little girl (almost 2 years old) with the name [name_u]Story[/name_u]. It definitely suits her, and she loves being able to sit down with a book and look at the pictures and listen to someone read to her. I think that if you and your hubby both really love them, then go for them. If you are perhaps not brave enough, then as other berries have suggested you could always use [name_f]Poet[/name_f], [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f], or [name_u]Story[/name_u] in the middle name position.
Not a fan of these for a first, but definately would use them for a middle.
#1 [name_u]Story[/name_u] - I like this the best. I actually prefer [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] nn [name_u]Story[/name_u], but it is a middle so no need for that #2 [name_f]Poet[/name_f] - I like aesthetically. Personally I would go with [name_f]Poesy[/name_f] which means the same thing but is more cutesy #3 [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] - Not my cup of tea but it is a middle so why not? I like the others better as word names though. This one is still good but is more specific so that’s why I put it in third place.
I love the idea. [name_u]Story[/name_u] and [name_f]Poet[/name_f] especially are adorable! For some these might be guilty pleasures. I plan to use some GP names one day because they can be adorable and usable. I never want to regret not choosing a name I didn’t love. I don’t think the child would get mocked at all actually
Some other names I think have a similar feel
[name_f]Plum[/name_f]
[name_u]Ever[/name_u]
[name_f]Willow[/name_f]
Halo
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u]
I don’t like [name_u]Story[/name_u]. I know a sweet little girl named [name_u]Story[/name_u] but I still don’t like it
I like [name_f]Poet[/name_f] but it feels more masculine. [name_f]Poem[/name_f]/Poeme feels better suited for a girl
I also like [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] and would use it on a boy or girl. The actor [name_m]Forest[/name_m] [name_m]Whitaker[/name_m] has a daughter named [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f]
