I just PMed you about this and then I saw the thread LOL I voted for This [name]Way[/name] Home but I was torn between it and A Song For [name]Lenore[/name]
I voted for This [name]Way[/name] Home. While I like your idea about the story behind A Song for [name]Lenore[/name], to me that sounds more like a song title or even possibly an album title than it does a name for the band. As far as the " - and Redemption" titles, they just don’t roll of my tongue the way I feel a band name should. But I can totally picture “A Song for [name]Lenore[/name]” by This [name]Way[/name] Home popping up on [name]Pandora[/name] or whatever
As far as your lead singer, I like [name]Brody[/name] Hammitt better than [name]Brody[/name] Appleton. Is [name]Brody[/name] going to be short for anything, or does it stand alone? Not that it matters, I’m just curious because my best friend’s brother’s name is [name]Brody[/name] but it’s short for [name]Broderick[/name].
I totally agree with you about the “A Song for [name]Lenore[/name]” thing. Which is why I didn’t really want “song”… I just can’t think of anything else. After I posted this I thought maybe Remembering [name]Lenore[/name], but it seems a bit long, and maybe still too close to Breaking [name]Benjamin[/name], and she was obviously still alive when they would have renamed the band… so “Remembering” [name]Lenore[/name] seems a bit morbid!
As for [name]Brody[/name], nope, it’s just [name]Brody[/name]. I thought about [name]Broderick[/name] nn [name]Brody[/name], but I don’t think it would have fit him as well. I’m leaning toward [name]Brody[/name] Hammitt, as well, but it just sounds like something I would use for a totally different type of story, maybe because I already used the surname Hammitt for a different story, and I sort of feel like I should stray from that. Still, I think I like [name]Brody[/name] Hammitt more than [name]Brody[/name] Appleton. The other band members are [name]Asher[/name] [name]Abbott[/name] “[name]Ash[/name]”, [name]Lincoln[/name] Gagne “[name]Cole[/name]”, etc., so I’d like something that sort of went with that but not too matchy. Maybe Appleton is too close to [name]Asher[/name] [name]Abbott[/name]?
Thanks for the additional votes, ladies! I’ve decided on [name]Brody[/name] Appleton. I love [name]Brody[/name] Hammitt but I already have another novel in the works that will hopefully be published one day with a [name]Noah[/name] Hammitt (who, consequently, is also a rock star!), and I don’t want them to get too confused. So [name]Brody[/name] Appleton he is!
I’m still a bit up-in-the-air for the band name, though. I have it narrowed to Ashes and Redemption or This [name]Way[/name] Home. I would love more thoughts on that… AAR has a bit more of a rock vibe to me, while TWH feels more country. They are mostly rock (with some pop and an itty bitty bit of country), so I feel AAR might fit better, but I’m afraid Ashes and Redemption has a bit too much of a religious feel, or too dark/heavy metal? Which they aren’t at all… Thoughts?
Thanks, ladies! I just figured I’d update where I am in the situation.
Now that you’ve narrowed it down to those two, I thought I’d give my (unsolicited) take on things…
I get what you’re saying about the “feel” of the band name being more rock versus country, but the word Redemption just sounds religious to me. Also, now that you’ve elaborated on the names of the rest of the band members, I feel like it’s a little awkward to have the word Ashes in the band name and also a band member named [name]Ash[/name] who ISN’T the lead singer. If that makes any sense at all.
If you’re attached to Appleton as [name]Brody[/name]'s last name that’s cool, but for some reason Appleton strikes me more as the name of a podunk town in the midwest than a surname. Have you considered something that sounds similar to Hammitt, like [name]Hamilton[/name]?
Thanks for your advice! lol, the [name]Ash[/name] thing does make sense. [name]Just[/name] knowing the kind of guy [name]Ash[/name] is turning out to be, I think he would be just the kind of guy to insist on having the “Ashes” part in the band name. He’s kind of pushy and a little full of himself, and the lead singer ([name]Brody[/name]) is more kind, selfless, and he is a [name]Christian[/name]. He would want redemption in their title, and I think [name]Sam[/name] would agree because being a part of the band has sort of redeemed [name]Sam[/name]'s life, pulled him out of a hard place. It works in my mind but I guess it is a bit hard to explain and I do see your point.
And yeah, for some reason, I am pretty attached to Appleton. I don’t want to mess with it.
About the band title, though, I am thinking of changing it to [name]SAGA[/name]. I like the thought behind it (it’s the last initial of all the band members names), but I don’t know if it’s cool enough for a rock band, haha. I just thought of [name]KENT[/name] (or maybe TENK? Probably lame, though, haha), which would be the last letter of each of their full names mixed up, too. I don’t know if it’s a cool idea or if I should just drop it. I like [name]SAGA[/name] more than [name]KENT[/name]/TENK though.
I like [name]SAGA[/name]! Less of a mouthful than Ashes and Redemption, and I like that it’s an acronym. I know you could (and probably would) shorten Ashes and Redemption to AAR, but then you run into the problem that AAR is already the abbreviation for a popular band in real life (All-American Rejects).
Thanks! I do like the acronym thing behind [name]SAGA[/name], and it does seem kind of rock-starish, but when I have asked others, none have said it’s as cool as Ashes and Redemption! So I don’t know. I may just keep AAR, even though the whole thing with All-American Rejects could be problematic.
I want to start writing tonight, haha, so hopefully I can decide by then!
