I have a Midwestern accent though, so the O would be very flat, more like an “ah” when you “open up and say [name_m]AH[/name_m].”

“CALL-iss” is the way I would pronounce [name_m]Collis[/name_m] but some may say “COH-liss”. Personally, I don’t find the name very appealing due to the fact that it’s too similar to the words “callous” (eg. insensitive to others) and “callus” (eg, hardened skin usually on hands and feet).

PS How do you get a “Call” sound out of a name starting with “Co”? And how can Hollis sound like Hawlis?

This must be an accent thing.

I’m with rollo. The first syllable of ‘[name_m]Collis[/name_m]’ is a short sound, as in ‘pot’ or ‘cot’. The same goes for [name_m]Colin[/name_m], [name_f]Holly[/name_f] and cough.

I think it only has an ‘au’ sound in an American accent.
