Poll: Ramona vs. Sylvie

My husband and I have made a lot of progress narrowing down our list for our second daughter, due in February, and I think it’s down to Ramona or Sylvie. Our first daughter is Felicity, but we think they both go well with it in different ways, so we’re more concerned with the name itself than the sibset. We both love both, but I lean a little more towards Sylvie - I love the “forest” meaning, the fact that it’s so elegant and meshes so well with Felicity, and have positive associations from reading the Gerard de Nerval novella when I studied abroad in France back in college. My husband leans towards Ramona, because he feels like it’s so solid, complementary, and sometimes worries Sylvie might sound nicknamey or young because of the -ie (though we both prefer it to Sylvia), but he does think the meaning/root of Ramona is a bit generic. Which do y’all like better?

i prefer Ramona in general but i think Sylvie works better with Felicity!

To me, Felicity and Sylvie sound too similar to each other.

I prefer [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]! Though I think the full [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] sounds better with [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] as I agree [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] does seem a bit nicknamey in comparison!

Both utterly gorgeous names, but I love the strength and sass of [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] so have to give her my vote :black_heart:

I voted [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], as I prefer meaning over sound (if I had to pick 1).

So I think both sound fabulous with Felicity so I would consider doing a combo like Sylvie Ramona or Ramona Sylvie. Personally I prefer the name Ramona so I voted for that but you can’t go wrong either way!

You and I have the same taste! Our oldest is [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and we’re due in a few weeks with a [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] :sparkling_heart:

I’m sorry but how has nobody mentioned [name_u]Loki[/name_u]? Like, were these two choices accidental or…? (Spoilers for the [name_u]Loki[/name_u] series)

Anyway, as a certified [name_u]Marvel[/name_u] Nerd™️, I’d say [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is the better option because [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] in the [name_u]Loki[/name_u] series is less morally grey. We don’t really know what Ramona’s gonna be doing in season 2 but based on her history in season 1 she probably won’t be a complete good guy. If your daughter grows up to watch [name_u]Loki[/name_u], she would probably prefer to share a name with one of the protagonists, as even when [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_u]Loki[/name_u] do morally questionable things, the audience is still rooting for them. Also, there’s that whole thing about not naming kids after characters with incomplete story arcs in case of an early death, which a variant of [name_u]Loki[/name_u] is kind of immune to.

If you don’t care about the show, pick whichever you prefer. That last part wasn’t very helpful but the main thing I had to add was to do with [name_u]Loki[/name_u].

That is my husband’s main concern, but just had to add that [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f] isn’t the full version of [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]! [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is just the [name_u]French[/name_u] version of the name - it’s like [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] or [name_u]Julie[/name_u] that way, where those aren’t nicknames for [name_f]Natalia[/name_f] or [name_f]Julia[/name_f], just different names.

I don’t think we’d do either as middle names - we’d either do a family name or a more meaningful name in the middle spot.

NO WAY, that is crazy! What are the chances?! I would be super curious to hear what the other names you considered were!

I hadn’t heard of the show, but gathered the main character is named [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]? I’m really not concerned about it - seems like it’s like to be a passing pop culture thing and if I haven’t heard of it, I figure many others will be in the same boat. Before she was born we worried a little about [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] being associated with the American [name_f]Girl[/name_f] or the TV show [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], but people hardly ever mention those.

Are you saying there is also a character named [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] in the show? Ha if so that is definitely a coincidence, or a creator who shares our taste! I haven’t seen any of the Avengers stuff and don’t think my husband has, either.

I’m split in general, but with your daughter’s name I lean toward [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]. [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] are too close in sound for my liking.

Both are lovely choices, but I am charmed by the idea of [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] as a sister for [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]! I like that they sound totally distinct from each other while standing up to each other in strength, spunk, and flair.

I adore both names, so for the name alone I struggle to answer the question. But for Felicity’s sister I definitely prefer [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]. [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] sounds very like [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] to me. It could end up being quite confusing in the family.

Yes, [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] is one of the main protagonists of the show, and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] is one of the main antagonists. I don’t think that the characters are so popular to where everyone will associate it with them. I really love them both but I think [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] is my favorite. And I also love your other child’s name [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] as well. So cute! <3
