I voted for [name]Iris[/name]. It’s vintage, a flower name and sounds soft but strong! And if it has sentimental value for your Mother, that makes all the difference. It would be like your mother had a second chance to name you all over again. Let us know your final decision. Good luck!

My vote would be [name]Fiona[/name]…I love it and I actually don’t think of Shrek at all when I hear it

I am the lone vote for [name]Lyra[/name] but I was thinking of [name]Milla[/name] too.

Names are so personal and just one encounter with a cute kid will make a name a different name for you, but I personally can’t love [name]Fiona[/name]. I personally don’t like really masculine sounds in girl names, particular o, so i just can’t get behind [name]Fiona[/name] or [name]Leona[/name] (altho [name]Leona[/name] is close to my name, but maybe that’s why I dislike it bc of confusion when younger). I do see an ogre princess when I hear this name. Other than the Shrek association, I think the [name]Fiona[/name] problem is particular to me.

Also, [name]Iris[/name] just doesn’t do much for me. I knew a few growing up and just didn’t do. I much prefer [name]Astrid[/name] and [name]Ingrid[/name], but even then, don’t like those that much really.

[name]Hazel[/name] - I don’t really think you need to have [name]Hazel[/name] eyes with this name, but it would be cool if the baby turned out to have [name]Hazel[/name] eyes, but there is no way ou can anticipate that! It just feels a little too old lady to me and, for me, I just can buy its funk revival.

So it leave [name]Lyra[/name]. I think I really like L- names on girls. It feels eternally feminine and romantic. [name]Lyra[/name] is cool and different if you can pull it off.

I don’t love [name]Milla[/name], but I see its appeal.

From reading your other posts and this one, it seems [name]Milla[/name] is the one for you. based on your description of the name and description of yourself, [name]Milla[/name] is the stand out!
[name]Finola[/name] would come in 2nd for me. Based upon your reservations about [name]Fiona[/name]. You don’t want to go from one distracted name (because it didnt fit) to another (because of association). I’d love to meet a college age girl named [name]Finola[/name]!
[name]Iris[/name] would come in 3rd for me because it seems you don’t love it as much as others mentioned. This would male a great mn to please your mom.
Good luck! You’re one step closer!

I discount [name]Iris[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], and [name]Fiona[/name], lovely as they may be, for their starbaby/pop culture associations.

[name]Lyra[/name] and [name]Milla[/name] are to me very similar names, and because of your family association I’d lean toward [name]Milla[/name]. But what about a longer name like [name]Camilla[/name] or [name]Millicent[/name] with [name]Milla[/name] as a short form?

Thank you everyone for your votes and feedback!

My mom is a huge part of the process for me and continues to drop bombs that completely alter the playing field. :frowning: We both love the sound of [name]Fiona[/name], but she’s now telling me we have a distant relative named [name]Fiona[/name] who happens to be crazy, on top of the Shrek association that is already a huge turn-off. I asked her to call me [name]Milla[/name] for a day or two to dip my toes into being a [name]Milla[/name], but her tongue twists every time she says it and the beautiful sound is somehow being lost in the southern accent prevalent around these parts. Storing [name]Milla[/name] ([name]Camilla[/name]) and [name]Fiona[/name] away for a while to let them rest and for me to get fresh perspective.

I’m finding [name]Lyra[/name]'s pronunciation, like [name]Milla[/name], is being lost in the accent – it’s coming out more like [name]Lara[/name], a pretty name but not what I’m going for, you know? That said, I’m going to the Northeast for college and who knows what I’ll be doing after that, so maybe this is something I should consider with a grain of salt.

This leaves [name]Iris[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name], both names I love but still carry reservations about. I think I need to slow down, reevaluate, and roll some names around on my tongue some more before coming to a definitive decision. The response to the poll has been a great help, guys!

[name]Cherry[/name], I think it’s safest to assume that you’ll stay in the south. You might go up north, nearly die of cold your first winter, and rush back home. You may only be able to find a job in the south. It’s where your roots are, so don’t discount it. I moved to Europe when I was in my early 20’s and it was cool… for about a month, and then I was totally homesick! For some reason I thought you were from Australia…

Anyway, just wanted to say that I feel ya on the accent problem. I’m from the urban south, so I only have a touch of accent, but my parents and some peers can’t pronounce several of the names I like. L’s and R’s and their combinations with some vowel sounds sometimes just don’t work. I can’t even say [name]Aurelia[/name] or [name]Laurel[/name] properly; comes out like mush. In your future search, just keep that in mind.

Good luck!

I’ve come to like [name]Lyra[/name] very much, so that’s the name I voted for. As for the others:

[name]Fiona[/name]: [name]Love[/name] [name]Fiona[/name], always have, probably always will. I wouldn’t mind the Shrek-connection, nowadays it’s hard to find a name that’s not in a movie and h”, she IS a princess after all
[name]Hazel[/name]: Same feeling as you have, but there are other names I love much more than [name]Hazel[/name]. (I know I’m not of any help now…)
[name]Iris[/name]: I’m an [name]Iris[/name] and most people usually think of the flowers first. They do think of the eyes as well, but it never bothered me. I love my name!
[name]Lyra[/name]: My favourite!
[name]Milla[/name]: [name]Don[/name]'t really like it.

[name]Milla[/name]! Second choice [name]Iris[/name]. gl
