Poll: Valentine too cute?

Is first name [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] (maybe with a nn?) too sweet/cute for boy? I’m in the US. Is it much better as a middle name? It has a few connections that could make it a good honor name and I do think it has a masculine sound but I’m unsure it’s too strongly connected to candy hearts. Right now I prefer the pronunciation like the holiday.

Best use for [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]?

  • First name, no nickname
  • First name, but only with a good nickname
  • Middle name

[name_u]Valentine[/name_u] seems perfectly unisex to me. I mean, [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]'s [name_u]Day[/name_u] is the most obvious connection and St. [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] was male so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work on a boy! If you want a nickname, I think [name_m]Len[/name_m]/Lenny is unisex leaning masculine. The [name_m]Valentin[/name_m] pronunciation is 100% male to me but if you prefer the [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] one there’s no reason why you shouldn’t use it.

I love the name [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]. I definitely think it works for a boy and deserves more use. It’s on my list too.

I like [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] in theory, but I think the [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]’s [name_u]Day[/name_u] jokes would get old very quickly. I prefer it as a middle name.

I love it, and don’t find it too cute at all.

It could certainly work as a fn! [name_m]Even[/name_m] without a nn. I simply prefer it as a middle name myself.

Oo I love [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]! I don’t think it’s too “cute” at all. I think it’s really strong and masculine and it’s all boy for me. I’m not into nn’s [name_u]Val[/name_u] or [name_u]Lenny[/name_u] but I do quite like V!

I voted for all because I can see it as a middle or a first, with or without a nickname.

Valentine is romantic but strong and powerful. It’s perfect for both genders. The meaning is the best.
I love [name_u]Valentine[/name_u], [name_m]Valentino[/name_m], [name_m]Valentim[/name_m] and [name_f]Valentina[/name_f], but unfortunately, I can’t find a nickname I like. However, if you have a nickname you like, I think it adds extra points to this wonderful name!

I’ve had a student named [name_m]Valentin[/name_m] - Norwegian version of it. Pronounced “[name_u]Val[/name_u]-en-teen” and I’ve never heard anyone have a bad thing to say about him or his name because it was “romantic” or draw any attention the the obvious connection to [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]’s [name_u]Day[/name_u].

He went by “teeny” by most his friends, which also had no connection to the word as we obviously speak Norwegian, but I think it’s pretty cool actually!

I love it so much! I have it as a middle for [name_m]Theodore[/name_m], but I love it as a first with the nn [name_u]Val[/name_u]! I tend to prefer nicknames, but it totally works without a nickname.

What about [name_m]Valentino[/name_m] if you’re looking for more masculine?

I love it as a first or middle, but I don’t think it has any nicknames I love as much as the full name so I voted for “first – no nickname” and “middle name”.

However, if you can find a nickname you love then I’d vote for any of these options. It’s a great name, beautiful but strong and vital.

I actually think [name_u]Valentine[/name_u] sounds masculine!

Valentine with a masculine nickname works, or as a mn.

WDTY of [name_m]Valentino[/name_m]?

Meh, not sure. Sounds very Italian and high fashion, we’re neither. I’m beginning to think that middle name is the way to go…

I voted as middle but I think it is usable as a first i just prefer it in the middle spot.
Nicknames [name_m]Vin[/name_m] or [name_u]Val[/name_u] would be handsome

If you were outside of the US Incould possibly see it as useable. But kids these days are just plain mean and nicknames aren’t always possible depending on the setting so if you have to use it is keep it in the middle. As someone else said I could see [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]’s [name_u]Day[/name_u] jokes becoming old quick.
